AZORES Where the Old World meets you halfway (The best kept secret of the Atlantic Ocean) Tourism is increasingly becoming an opportunity for experiences and emotions. Visiting Pico, the youngest island of the Azorean Archipelago, halfway from the Old World to America, (only five hours from Toronto) will be an unforgettable journey for whoever still wants to explore the old-fashioned ways of a “modernizing” Europe. You will be able to travel around in total safety and tranquility breathing pure air and sleeping in profound silence. Or enjoy walking some of the many nature paths or swimming in the middle of Winter. You might view whales or dolphins right off our coast or explore an amazing volcano cave. If you are daring you can climb Mount Pico, the highest mountain in all Portugal! You will most definitely admire this peak from ancient vineyards (now World Patrimony of UNESCO) that produced wine long ago praised by czars of Russia. To come to the Azores it is to capture the last rays of a disappearing Old World and live a bit of the life our ancestors lived and left for us to learn from and enjoy. Once used by Pico’s people the donkey, a friendly animal used not only as domestic beast of burden but also as a mean of transportation, they are more rarely kept these days. We invite you to revisit the ancient rites of the island’s people while contributing to the maintaining of these gentle creatures, otherwise risking extinction. Whale Watching From our boats, live the unique experience of closely observing the biggest mammal on Earth. While at sea you can be certain to spot pods of friendly dolphins, that will play in your bow wave for hours. We can also provide you with the opportunity of swimming with them, enjoying this unique experience of sharing their privacy. Whale Watching Tower at Aldeia da Fonte In the XIX century, in Pico Island, people used to live from the soil and the sea. The whale catch was the moment of all dangers especially on summer. The whale watching tower, was described as a small round white house, with only one door and one window without glass. It was from here that men controlled the sea, and in the minimal sign of whales they launched the rocket, and all the whalers ran to the sea. In our days, the whale watching towers are seen as touristy centers to watch whales, as the whaling activity ended in 1987. Our tower is a replica of a famous one and we hope that you will spot many dolphins and whales. Climbing Pico The imponent presence of the volcano confers to Pico Island its ‘soul’, its charisma. Its powerful charm arouses an appeal to climb it - a demanding venture, but largely compensated by the breathtaking experiences it presents us with. Climbing Pico requires a certain physical aptitude. It is of utmost imprudence to venture without a credentied guide who can ensure your utter safety. Bike Rental Pico Island hold the promise of beautiful landscapes and charming spots around every turn of the road. Possibly the most enjoyable way of discovering them is with a rental bike and a signaled map. Through the road that goes from Aldeia da Fonte to São João, you will arrive to a rather original Squid and Spermwhales Museum, held by one of the world’s biggest experts on cetaceans’ physiology. Bird Watching Bird watching in its natural habitat allows a particular overlook on the behaviour of the species. In Pico Island, there is a large concentration of tiny birds that eat fruit and insects, birds of prey like the kite, which is the symbol of the Archipelago, as well as seabirds like “cagarras” and “garajaus” . The reason for such bird abundances in Pico Island is the easy nidification in the rocks shelters. As you will see there’s a rich fauna both in the sky, land and in the sea of Pico Island. Diving The underwater scenery alters between basaltic rock formations with canyons and caves and open sand flats. Each little cave or rock can be home to a variety of large and small marine animals, such as moray eels, octupus, lobster, spiral tube worms, sea urchins and sea spiders.
