Dining Out in Brazil Lesson Plan
Brazilian Portuguese Grammar
Eu quero vs. Eu gostaria.
The two most common expressions for “I want” or “I would like” in
Brazilian Portuguese are:
Eu quero (I want)
Eu gostaria de (I would like)
What is the difference between them?
To understand the difference you first need to know that Portuguese is a
very informal language. It is recommended that when you say Eu quero
(I want), you say por favor (please).
e.g. Eu quero um bolo de chocolate, por favor. (I want a chocolate
cake, please.)
Eu quero – More informal (You say it to your friends.)
Eu gostaria de – More formal (You say it to strangers.)
Let’s practice what we have learned so far.
1. Circle the correct answer. Can you tell which of those
sentences you would ask someone you know or you would ask
a stranger?
Eu quero uma banana, por favor.
Stranger or family?
Eu gostaria de um copo de suco de maçã.
Stranger or family?
Eu gostaria de uma torrada.
Stranger or family?
Eu gostaria de um copo de leite. Stranger or family?
Eu quero uma pizza, por favor.
Stranger or family?
Eu quero uma salada verde, por favor.
Stranger or family?
