mais de uma década!
Hospital do Câncer de Uberaba já conta com mais de 130 voluntários
O
trabalho é duro, mas a recompensa é grande. Afinal,
nem só de processos cirúrgicos e terapia baseia-se o tratamento do
câncer. Há mais de nove anos a voluntária Ana Keyla dedica muito do seu
tempo para a melhoria da qualidade de
vida dos pacientes, em Uberaba (MG),
e também para a prevenção da doença.
Uma equipe cada vez maior junta-se a
ela nesse trabalho por amor à vida.
“Nossas atividades consistem principalmente no atendimento a pacientes
carentes no ambulatório do hospital,
atendimento ao paciente no leito,
apoio às mulheres que passaram pela
mastectomia. É muito importante
passar informações e, acima de tudo,
carinho e atenção, para que os pacientes consigam enfrentar a nova condição”, declara Ana Keyla. “Fornecemos
próteses mamárias, educação dirigida
ao local do paciente, palestras sobre o
câncer e sua prevenção na comunidade
de maneira geral”, completa.
A Associação dos Voluntários de Combate ao Câncer (AVCCU) foi fundada
em 09 de dezembro de 1998 por um
grupo de uberabenses liberado por
Sandra Abadia Gomes de Andrade e
Nilda Curi Barra, com apoio da Associação Paulista Feminina de Combate
ao Câncer – APFCC. Sua maior atuação está no Hospital Dr. Hélio Angotti, que atende por mês 1.300 pacientes

de Uberaba e de mais de 140 municípios do Triângulo Mineiro.
Uma parte do trabalho da associação
também envolve o estabelecimento de
parcerias com organizações sociais filantrópicas e entidades públicas ou privadas de Uberaba e de cidades vizinhas.
Além disso, a AVCCU implanta juntamente com as comunidade programas
de prevenção de combate ao câncer e
estende à família do paciente assistência
emergente e de encaminhamento, em
parceria com as prefeituras e ONGS,
além de levantar subsídios para medicamentos aos doentes carentes.
Há três anos, a associação iniciou trabalho durante a ExpoZebu, a maior

exposição pecuária do Brasil. “Barretos tem doações dos artistas que se
apresentam durante o seu tradicional
rodeio. Nós também podemos ter doações dos nossos artistas, que são os pecuaristas”, afirma Ana Keyla.
“Abrace essa causa” é o nome do projeto
que já é sucesso de público: mais de cinco
mil camisetas com a estampa da associa-
ção já foram vendidas e a receita revertida em benefícios para os pacientes.
Os trabalhos da equipe de voluntários é
apoiado por um hospital com excelente estrutura e equipe multidisciplinar
de atendimento oncológico completa,
com clínicos, cirurgiões e radioterapeutas, utilizando a mais alta tecnologia
para tratamento do câncer. “O benfei-
tor é aquele que faz e passa. O amigo é
aquele que faz e silencia. O voluntário
é aquele que faz, silencia e fica amigo
para sempre”, resume Ana Keyla. Está

the reward. After all, cancer
treatment is not only based
on surgical and therapy processes. During a period of more than nine years,
the volunteer Ana Keyla dedicates a
good part of her time to improve the patients’ quality of life, in Uberaba (MG),
as well as the prevention of the disease.
An increasingly bigger team joins Ana
in her work for the love of life.
“Our activities consist mainly in the assistance to needy patients in the hospital infirmary, assistance to the patients
in bed, support to women who suffered
mastectomy. It is important to transmit
information and, most of all, affection
and attention so that the patients may
face their new condition”, declares Ana

sis, oriented education at the patient’s
location, lectures on cancer and, in a
general manner, its prevention in the
community”, she concluded.
The Association of the Cancer-Fighting
Volunteers (AVCCU) was founded
on December 09, 1998, by a group of
Uberaba citizens under the leadership
of Sandra Abadia Gomes de Andrade
and Nilda Curi Barra with the support
of the Paulista Feminine Association of
Cancer-Fighting – APFCC. Its main
activity is at the Hospital Dr. Hélio
Angotti which receives 1300 Uberaba
patients per month and at more than
140 municipalities of the Triângulo
Mineiro.
Part of the association’s work also involves the establishment of partnerships with philanthropic social organizations and public or private entities
of Uberaba and of neighboring cities.
Furthermore, the AVCCU implements, together with the communities,
programs of prevention against cancer and extends to the patient’s family
emergent and forwarding assistance in
partnership with the City Halls and
NGOs, besides raising funds for the
needy patients’ medicines.
Three years ago the association started
its work at the ExpoZebu, the major
Brazilian cattle stock exhibition. “The
city of Barretos gives donations from the
artists that present themselves during its
traditional rodeo. We also can have donations from our artists who are the cattle stock breeders”, affirms Ana Keyla.
“Embrace this cause” is the name of the
project which is already a public success: more than five thousand T-shirts

with the association’s logo have been
sold and its income reverted in benefit
of the patients.
The team-work of the volunteers is supported by a hospital with an excellent
structure and multi-disciplinary team
of complete oncological assistance, with
doctors, surgeons and radiotherapists,
using the highest technology for cancer
