SHORT CV:
Eliana B. Souto is Professor of Pharmaceutical Technology in the Faculty of Health Sciences at University
Fernando Pessoa in Porto, Portugal. Professor Souto is graduated in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the
Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Coimbra. She also obtained a post-graduated Master degree in
Pharmaceutical Technology and Pharmacotechnique at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto, and
awarded with the degree of PhD in Pharmaceutical Technology, Biopharmaceutics and Biotechnology at
the Institute of Pharmacy, Free University of Berlin, Germany. In December 2007 she has been awarded
with the Women In Science 2007 L’Oreal Portugal Prize, supported by UNESCO and the Portuguese
Science and Technology Foundation, and granted by L’Oreal Portugal. Nowadays, Professor Souto
coordinates the Euro-PhD in Advanced Drug Delivery from Galenos Network in her Faculty. Her research
group is devoted to the design, development, and characterization of new drug delivery systems based
on colloidal carriers. Other research interests are the controlled delivery of drugs across biological
barriers, namely skin, gastrointestinal tract and blood-brain-barrier. Professor Souto is Associate Editor
of the International Journal of Nanomedicine, being also on the Editorial Board of the Journal of
Biomedical Nanotechnology, Die Pharmazie and Current Nanoscience, and is a member of the Advisory
Board of several other peer-reviewed scientific journals.
