University of Florence The University of Florence is a relatively young Institution with ancient roots going back to the Studium Florentinum founded in 1321. The University of Florence counts about 54,000 students, with almost 5,5% of them coming from foreign countries. Teaching staff and researchers number about 2,000 and members of the administrative staff are almost 1,600. Scientific research is carried out in the 24 Departments, grouped into 5 major areas: Social Sciences, Humanities and Education, Scientific, Technological and Biomedical areas. A large part of the yearly budget is allocated to scientific research. In the recent past the University of Florence has been ranked top among Italian Universities in the distribution of national research funds. High-level research avails itself of 10 research centers destined to new and particularly advanced research themes, which attract funding and form synergies with other institutions. The University of Florence counts a renowned Museum of Natural History (with six sections and several historical scientific collections) and various facilities such as the University Language Centre, the Cultural Centre for Foreigners, the SIAF- Computer Services of the University. Furthermore, it takes part in 30 interuniversity organizations. The University Library system consists of six big libraries. Educational programmes and services With its 10 Schools ((Agriculture, Architecture, Economics and Management, Human Health Sciences, Humanities and Education, Law, Engineering, Psychology, Education, Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences, Political Sciences) the University of Florence offers 55 undergraduate degree courses, 63 graduate courses. Study programmes include also 78 Master degrees (9 of them in cooperation with other Universities) and 40 postgraduate courses (Corsi di perfezionamento). In the academic year 2013/2014 the academic offer includes the following II cycle courses entirely in English: Tropical Rural development (Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Sviluppo rurale tropicale), Development Economics (Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Economia dello sviluppo avanzata), Design of Sustainable Tourism systems (Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Progettazione dei sistemi turistici) and in Finance and Risk Management (Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Finanza e gestione del rischio), curriculum in “Architectural Design” in the framework of the degree course in Architecture (Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Architettura). International Relations and European Studies (Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Relazioni internazionali e studi europei) will include two curricula, both in Italian and in English. The University is working on the implementation of courses specifically designed for obtaining a joint joint degrees, double degrees and courses which foresee a reciprocal recognition of the final qualification. Since 2000/2001 the University of Florence has a joint French-Italian Degree in Law together with the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne and bilateral study courses with partner Institutions in Hungary (Eotvos Lorand University) and Germany (Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universiy). Reciprocity was agreed in the field of Engineering with Sts Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, in the field of Mathematics with Universidad Complutense de Madrid, in the field of International Relations and European Studies with the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. With the same view the University of Florence organizes international doctorate courses (at present four, in cooperation with European and extra-European Institutions). Apart from the courses, the University also offers students important auxiliary activities, including sports, languages and computer studies, the university choir and orchestra, cultural and educational initiatives funded by university grants, psychological support and the chance of paid part-time collaboration in various types of work. The International dimension Florence is known worldwide for its important and very rich cultural, architectural and artistic heritage; many European and American Universities have their own premises or programmes in Florence. Therefore, the University of Florence has a natural international vocation, and the development of internationalization is one of its strategic priorities. International agreements of cultural and scientific cooperation have been signed with about 300 Universities in foreign countries. These agreements aim at encouraging direct cooperation between institutions of higher learning in different countries and to promote the reciprocal exchange of teachers, researchers, students and technical and administrative staff.
