Research Major research theme focus on protein misfolding in human disease, specifically protein aggregation mechanisms in neurodegeneration (Alzheimer’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and human metabolic diseases (mitochondrial disorders). Our research is aimed at understanding the biology and biophysics of protein folding, an essential cellular process through which proteins acquire a functional conformation. We are interested in establishing which mechanisms trigger protein misfolding, in identifying determinants of protein stability, and in addressing how protein interactions, metal ions, small molecules and post translational modifications influence the protein folding process. We are also interested in molecular chaperones and pharmacological recovery of protein folding defects by small molecules (pharmacological chaperones).
