That’s why the songs of sad people are happy and the songs of happy people are sad. Fado, however, is neither happy nor sad. It is an episode during an intermission. It gave shape to the Portuguese soul when it didn’t yet exist and yearned for everything without the strength to really yearn. Strong souls attribute everything to Destiny; only the weak believe in their own will, because it doesn’t exist. Fado is the exhaustion of a strong soul, Portugal’s look of disdain at the God in which it believed and which it then abandoned. In fado the Gods return, legitimate and from far away. That is the secret meaning of the figure of King Dom Sebastião.
