A Colecção Municipal de Arte (CMA) consiste no património
artístico móvel do Município de Sintra (não incluído em colecções
específicas como são o caso dos Museus Municipais) e existe,
enquanto conjunto iconográfico, desde a criação do Museu
Municipal, em 1939, o qual funcionou no Palácio Valenças desde
1941 e até aos anos 60. Desde então, parte da Colecção continuou
exposta no Palácio Valenças bem como noutros edifícios e
projectos museológicos municipais.
A actual designação é consequência do estudo e inventariação
iniciados em 2004, recuperando a ideia de Colecção de Arte, a
qual existia apenas a espaços. Desta forma, o presente espaço
possibilita a mostra pública de obras de arte provenientes da
CMA, muitas pela primeira vez em muitos anos. Mas, também, a
realização
de
exposições
específicas
de
outras
Colecções
Municipais, tendo como objectivo a interacção e valorização do
património artístico municipal no seu todo e para todos.
The Municipal Art Collection consists of Sintra’s township
mobile artistic patrimony (not included in specific collections,
such as the Municipal Museums) and exists, as an iconographic
ensemble, ever since the foundation of the Municipal Museum, in
1939, which functioned in the Palácio Valenças (Valenças Palace)
since 1941 and until the 60’s. Ever since then, part of the
Collection remained in exhibition in the Palácio Valenças, as well
as in other buildings and municipal museology projects.
The current designation is the consequence of the study and
inventorying initiated in 2004, recovering the idea of Art
Collection, which existed only from time to time. This way, the
present space makes possible to show, publicly, works of art
proceeding from the Municipal Art Collection, several for the first
time in many years. But, also, the possibility to carry out specific
exhibitions with works from other Municipal Collections, for
purpose of interaction and valuation of the municipal artistic
patrimony, in its whole, and for everyone.

A respeitosa designação de
Mestre, na Arte (e não enquanto
título académico), é sinónimo do
reconhecimento de uma carreira
e do consequente respeito pela
excelência. Assim foram tratados
pelos seus pares, amigos e
alunos, por exemplo, duas das
figuras da História sintrense do
passado século, Leal da Câmara e
Pedro Anjos Teixeira. Através
deste apreço público, é-lhes,
desta forma, conferido um
estatuto que, na esmagadora
maioria dos casos, os embaraça.
Mas, convenhamos, por norma, é
um patamar merecido e que
merece ser usufruído em plena
vida dos artistas.

Municipal Art Collection

‘Master’, in art (not as an
academic degree), is synonymous
of the recognition of a career and
of the consequent respect for
excellence. It was how they
where respectfully called upon, by
their pears, friends and students
– just to give an example – two
historic figures in latest century
Sintra’s history, Leal da Câmara
and Pedro Anjos Teixeira.
Through this public appreciation,
they are given a status, which in
the majority of the situations,
only gets them embarrassed.
Nevertheless, it is, in most cases,
deserved and it should be
appreciated during the artists’
life.
Ora, a exposição em apreço foi
período de um século dessas
figuras tutelares da arte
portuguesa – que, de modo feliz,
enriquecem o património artístico
municipal e, em particular, a
Colecção de Arte. Convivem
assim, românticos e tardoromânticos, modernistas e neorealistas, paisagistas intemporais
e abstractos, num eclético
conjunto.
Therefore, the present exhibition
was thought upon, considering
one century’s period of those
tutelary figures of Portuguese art
– which, in a happily manner,
enrich the municipal artistic
patrimony and, particularly, the
Municipal Art Collection. Here, we
have Romantics and Tardyromantics, Modernists and Neorealistics, timeless Landscape
painters and Abstracts, in an
eclectic ensemble.
