21 de agosto de 1941, cinco
visionários constituíram aquela que
é hoje a mais antiga companhia
aérea portuguesa em operação - a
SATA.
Foi com sentido de admiração e
respeito pelo génio empreendedor que promovemos,
no passado dia 21 de agosto, uma singela homenagem
aos fundadores da empresa, descerrando uma placa
com os seus nomes no edifício onde funcionou a
primeira sede.
Agora que entramos no septuagésimo quinto ano de
atividade, o nosso desígnio essencial é servir os nossos
clientes cada vez melhor, voando para os destinos que
conhecemos bem.
Por isso o desafiamos a viajar connosco até Toronto e
a visitar uma das mais famosas atrações turísticas do
Canadá, localizada a curta distância, a pé, do centro
da cidade: o Distillery District. É reservado
unicamente a pedestres e velocípedes. Sinta-se numa
autêntica viagem pelo tempo, mergulhando na
história do que foi outrora a maior destilaria do
Império Britânico. Contemple a rara beleza dos mais
de 40 edifícios que constituem o maior conjunto de
arquitetura industrial da era vitoriana melhor
preservado da América do Norte. Estes edifícios estão
atualmente transformados em galerias, cafés
modernos e tranquilos, restaurantes sumptuosos,
teatros inspiradores, bem como estúdios e oficinas de
vários artistas.
Mas gostaríamos, também, de o convidar a visitar
Sintra. A vila de Sintra, as suas paisagens, a serra e a
qualificação como Património Mundial da UNESCO
são motivos bastantes para a visita. Residência de reis

Welcome to the Azores!
On the 21st August 1941, 5 visionaries set up that which is
the oldest operating Portuguese airline company – SATA.
It was with admiration and respect for this entrepreneurial
spirit that we promoted on the past August 21st a simple
tribute to its founders by unveiling a plaque with their
names in the building where the company’s first
headquarters operated.
Now that we are commemorating our 75th anniversary our
essential aim is to serve our customers better and better,
flying to destinations we know well.
Therefore, we challenge you to travel with us to Toronto and
visit one Canada’s most famous tourist attractions, located
a short walking distance from the city center: the Distillery
District. A pedestrian and bicycle only area you will travel
in time, by immersing in the history of what was once the
largest distillery in the British Empire. You will be able to
contemplate the rare architecture of the Victorian era in over
40 buildings which are a sample industrial architecture and
which are the best preserved in North America. These
buildings have been turned into galleries, modern and calm
cafés, sumptuous restaurants, inspiring theaters, as well as
studios and workshops of several artists.
But we would also like to invite you to visit Sintra. The
town of Sintra, its Landscapes, Sintra Mountain, the
classification as World Heritage by UNESCO, are well
enough reasons to visit it. The home of kings and queens,
inspiring painters, poets and writers from all over the world,
Sintra is a unique destination in Portugal. Quoting Vergílio
Ferreira, “Sintra is the only place in the country in which
History has been turned into a garden. Because all of its
legend converges there and its monuments themselves tell us
less about the past than an eternal gift of green”.
Or, in Eça de Queiroz’s unique words in Os Maias,
“Everything in Sintra is divine. There is no corner which is
not a poem”.
Now that fall is at its peak, become inspired and set off to
discover such destinations.

It’s to let yourself be inebriated by the colors of the Bolhão
market and, among the smell of fresh fruit, get to know
the authenticity of the people of the north.
It’s to have tea at the glamorous Majestic, one of the most
beautiful cafés in the world since 1921.
It’s to get lost for hours in the iconic Lello bookstore,
among one-hundred-year-old bookshelves and rare books.
It’s to climb more than 200 steps of the Torre dos Clérigos,
built by architect Nicolau Nasoni, and to cast your eyes in
each corner of this city full of charisma and personality.
It’s to let yourself be inspired by the beauty of the gardens
at Fundação de Serralves, after a long visit to the museum
of contemporary art.
It’s to go to a concert at Casa da Música, a fantastic
architectonical work, and a project of the Dutchman Rem
Koolhaas.

SATA AJUDA A REALIZAR SONHO
DE 25 JOVENS MUITO ESPECIAIS
a primeira semana
de setembro, a
SATA ajudou a
realizar o sonho
de 25 jovens
adultos com
paralisia cerebral,
trazendo-os à ilha de São Miguel, nos Açores,
numa iniciativa única em Portugal.
Para alguns destes jovens, foi a primeira
vez que andaram de avião, o que tornou
a experiência ainda mais especial. A SATA
acompanhou-os nesta aventura e
testemunhou a força e energia com que se
dedicam a fazer tudo o que, muitas vezes,
parece difícil ou impossível.
Durante cinco dias, com um entusiasmo
contagiante, os jovens puderam conhecer
a idílica ilha de São Miguel e praticar
várias atividades desportivas e de lazer,
rodeados por uma natureza exuberante.
Golfe, canoagem, jogos tradicionais e
adaptados, banhos em piscinas naturais de água
quente, entre outras atividades, fizeram as delícias
destes jovens e provaram que, existindo condições
para a prática do turismo adaptado, muitas pessoas
com paralisia cerebral – em Portugal existem
20.000 pessoas com esta condição- poderão, com
autonomia, usufruir da satisfação de conhecer
locais diferentes e ter experiências novas, como
qualquer outro cidadão.
Para que esta viagem fosse possível, a SATA não
poupou esforços e certificou-se de que, no dia da
viagem, todas as áreas envolvidas estariam a postos
para prestar os melhores cuidados a estes 25
turistas especiais, 14 deles a viajar em cadeira de
rodas.
Para isso muito contribuiu a preciosa colaboração
de várias entidades governamentais e empresariais
como o governo da Região Autónoma dos Açores,
a CRESAÇOR, a Associação de Paralisia Cerebral
local, várias unidades hoteleiras, entre outras.
Esta viagem foi proporcionada pela Federação das
Associações Portuguesas de Paralisia Cerebral,
através do projeto “Pequenos Voos para Grandes
Viagens, Capacitar para Participar”.
Além de proporcionar
experiências
diversificadas aos
jovens com paralisia
cerebral, esta iniciativa
teve um forte objetivo
de capacitação e
inclusão social,
sensibilizando a
sociedade para a
importância de um
turismo acessível a
todos.

Nostra, in one of the most joyful
moments of this trip.

Esta iniciativa, que testou a capacidade dos Açores
para receber turistas com mobilidade reduzida, revelou-se
um verdadeiro sucesso.
SATA MAKES THE DREAM OF 25 VERY
SPECIAL YOUNG PEOPLE COME TRUE In the
first week of September, SATA helped the dream of 25
young adults with cerebral palsy come true, bringing them
to the island of S. Miguel, Azores, in a unique initiative in
Portugal.
For some of these young people, it was the first time they
flew which made the experience even more special. SATA
accompanied them in this adventure and witnessed the
strength and energy which they put in doing everything
which most of the time seems hard and impossible.
For five days, with a contagious enthusiasm, the young
people were able to visit the idyllic island of S. Miguel and
take part in several sports and leisure activities,
surrounded by a luscious nature and a surreal beauty.
Golf, canoeing, traditional and adapted games, swimming
natural swimming pools of warm water, among other
activities, delighted these young people who proved that,
with the conditions existing for an adapted tourism, many
people with cerebral palsy – in Portugal there are 20.000
suffering from it – would be able, in an autonomous
manner, to enjoy the pleasure of getting to know different
places and have new experiences, as any other citizen.
This initiative, which tested Azores’ capacity in
welcoming tourists with reduced mobility, turned out to
be a success.
To make this trip possible, SATA spared no effort and
made sure that, on the day of the trip, all the involved
areas would be available to provide the best care possible
to these 25 special tourists, 14 of them traveling with
wheel chairs.
Contributing to make this possible was the precious
cooperation of several governmental and business entities
such as the Autonomous Regional Government of the
Azores, CRESAÇOR, the local Cerebral Palsy Association,
several hotels, among others.
This trip was made possible by the Federation of the
Portuguese Cerebral Palsy Associations, through the
project Pequenos Voos para Grandes Viagens, Capacitar
para Participar.
Besides providing different experiences to young people
with cerebral palsy, this initiative had a strong aim of
empowerment and social inclusion, aiming at making
society aware of the importance of tourism accessible to
everyone.

O Ministério da Cidadania e
Imigração do Canadá
implementou, desde o dia 1
de agosto, e numa primeira
fase, uma autorização
eletrónica para todos os
passageiros que pretendam
viajar para o Canadá ao
abrigo do Programa de
Isenção de Vistos. Este
requisito tornar-se-á
obrigatório a partir do dia
15 de março de 2016 e
serão cobrados sete dólares
canadianos aos viajantes
por utilizarem o Sistema
Eletrónico para Autorização
de Viagens (ETA). A
autorização tem uma
validade de cinco anos e
poderá ser utilizada em
viagens múltiplas ao
Canadá.

Canada’s Ministry of
Citizenship and Immigration
has implemented, as from
August 1st and in a first
phase, an electronic
authorization for all
passengers who wish to
travel to Canada under the
Program of Exemption of
Visas. This requirement will
be mandatory as from March
15th 2016 and seven
Canadian dollars will be
charged to travelers for using
the Electronic Authorization
System. The authorization is
valid for five years and can
be used for multiple travels
to Canada.

SATA COMPLETA 74 ANOS
o dia 21 de agosto a
SATA completou 74
anos, entrando
assim no seu
septuagésimo
quinto ano de existência. De forma a celebrar
esta data tão especial, foi celebrada uma
missa de aniversário e ação de graças na
Igreja de São José, seguida de uma visita às
instalações do Instituto de Apoio à Criança,
onde foram oferecidos vários batismos de
voo. Para finalizar o dia foi descerrada uma
placa, na Rua dos Mercadores, naquela que
foi a primeira sede da SATA, de forma a
homenagear os seus fundadores.

celebrated 74 years, thus entering its 75th
anniversary of existence. In order to celebrate
such a special date, an anniversary and
thanksgiving mass took place at the São José
church, followed by a visit to the building where the
Instituto de Apoio à Criança functions. To end the
day, a commemorative plaque was unveiled, on Rua
dos Mercadores, where SATA’s first headquarters
were, so as to pay homage to its founders.

THE PEDIATRIC WARD OF HDES
o dia 2 de setembro
concluiu-se com sucesso mais uma iniciativa solidária apoiada pela SATA, desta
vez no Serviço de Pediatria do Hospital do Divino
Espírito Santo de Ponta Delgada (HDES), que recebeu
um aparelho de pHmetria Esofágica, essencial para a
realização de exames de diagnóstico em crianças com
doenças do refluxo gastroesofágico.
Trata-se de um equipamento que regista, através da
medição do pH, a presença, ou não, de ácido refluído do estômago para o esófago, através de um exame
efetuado em ambulatório, que não requer internamento.
Este aparelho permitirá, pela primeira vez, efetuar exames a crianças em São Miguel, evitando o transtorno
físico e emocional das deslocações ao continente.

On September 2nd yet again a solidarity initiative was
concluded sponsored by SATA, this time at the Pediatric
Ward of Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo in Ponta
Delgada (HDES), which has received a Esophageal pH
monitoring device, essential for the diagnosis exams in
children with illnesses of the gastro esophageal reflux.
It’s a device which registers, by means of the measurement of the pH, the presence or not, of acid reflux
from the stomach to the esophagus, with a test performed as an outpatient, therefore not requiring hospitalization.
This device will allow, for the first time, for tests to be
carried out in children in São Miguel, avoiding the
physical and emotional inconvenience of having to travel to the Mainland.

Luís Vitorino, representante do Rotary Club de Bristol,
referiu que o jantar, onde foram angariados 16 753
euros, só foi possível por ter contado com “o apoio
de muitas entidades, parceiras desta iniciativa, entre
as quais a SATA”.
A Dra. Fernanda Gomes, diretora do Serviço de
Pediatria, agradeceu o gesto de todas as entidades
envolvidas na iniciativa que permitiu adquirir este
aparelho, essencial para tantas crianças.
Esta iniciativa insere-se na política de responsabilidade social que a SATA desenvolve, contínua e ativamente, através do patrocínio de viagens e apoio a
diversas entidades nas áreas da solidariedade social,
cultura, desporto e promoção turística da Região
Autónoma dos Açores.
Em 2015 a SATA apoiou, entre outros, o projeto da
Fundação Make a Wish, que realiza desejos a crianças
e jovens dos 3 aos 18 anos, com doenças graves; o
projeto "Pequenos Voos para Grandes Viagens Capacitar para Participar", da Federação das Associações Portuguesas de Paralisia Cerebral; o projeto
dos Amigos da Pediatria da Ilha Terceira; e iniciativas da Direção Regional da Cultura.
SATA offered two plane tickets, auctioned at a fundraising dinner, organized by Bristol’s Rotary Club, USA,
in a partnership with the Group of Friends of the
Pediatric Ward of the HDES, who contributed to the
purchase of the so much desired medical and hospital
equipment.

helped purchase this device so much in need by so
many children.
This initiative is part of the social responsibility policy
which SATA carries out, continuously and actively,
through the sponsoring of flights and support to several entities in the areas of social solidarity, culture,
sports and touristic promotion of the Azores Autonomous
Region.
In 2015, SATA sponsored, among others, the Make a
Wish’s Foundation project which make seriously ill
children’s wishes (from 3 to 18) come true; the project
“Pequenos Voos para Grandes Viagens– Capacitar para
Participar”, of the Federation of the Portuguese
Associations of Cerebral Palsy”; the project of the
Friends of Pediatrics of Terceira Island and initiatives
of the Regional Board of Culture.

Susana Bettencourt reparte a sua vida entre Famalicão,
Açores, Paris e Londres. É nessas viagens que encontra
inspiração e tem o avião como seu escritório, onde estrutura
e planifica o seu trabalho.

empre teve um talento natural para
os trabalhos manuais, mas nem
sempre percebeu que a sua carreira passaria pelo design de moda.
Susana Bettencourt, neta e filha de
açorianos, sente e vive as ilhas desde
tenra idade. “Aos cinco anos, os meus pais puseram-me
num avião com aquele crachá de menor que viaja sozinha e vim para S. Miguel passar as férias com os meus
avós, a minha madrinha e tia. Foram as primeiras de muitas férias que se repetiram por muitos anos e ainda se
mantêm.”
Foi com a avó que aprendeu a bordar. Seguiu-se, como
uma evolução natural, o crochet e a malha. “Com elas
passava horas e horas e ficava fascinada com as coisas
que conseguia fazer com as minhas mãos.”
Contrariando o seu talento, opta, no ensino secundário, pela área de Ciências. Apesar de ter excelentes notas,
Susana Bettencourt sentia-se frustrada. “Andava sempre
mal disposta, de mau humor e com duas pedras na
mão”, conta. “Felizmente, os meus pais conseguiram perceber, muito melhor do que eu, o que se passava e encorajaram-me a mudar de área”. Transferiu-se para Artes
e, quando terminou o 12º ano, tinha uma certeza:

trips that she finds inspiration and the plane
is her office, where she structures and plans
her work. She has always had a natural talent for crafts,
but she has not always understood that her career would be
fashion design. Susana Bettencourt, the granddaughter and
daughter of Azoreans, feels and experiences the islands since
a tender age. “At five, my parents put me on a plane – and
I came to S. Miguel to spend my vacations with my grandparents, my godmother and aunt. These were the first of many
vacations that were to be repeated for many years until
today.”
Her grandmother taught her how to embroider. Then, as a
natural evolution, crochet and knitting. “”These activities kept
me fascinated and I’d spend hours and hours on them and
fascinated with the things I managed to do with my hands.”
Contradicting her talent, she chooses in secondary school for
the scientific studies. Despite having excellent grades, Susana
Bettencourt felt frustrated. “I was always in a bad mood,
ill-tempered and having a bone to pick”, she says. “Luckily
my parents managed to understand – much better than me
– what was going on and encouraged me to change my course of studies”. She enrolled in Arts and when she finished
the 12th grade she was sure of one thing: “She wanted to

“Queria fazer roupas!” Mas antes de entrar na universidade fez, por insistência do pai, um curso de costura.
“Na cabeça do meu pai não fazia sentido que alguém
que quisesse desenhar roupas não soubesse costurar. E
ele tinha razão!”
Estavam dados os primeiros passos para uma carreira na
área do design e da moda. Hoje, a vida de Susana
Bettencourt reparte-se entre Famalicão, onde tem estabelecida a sua empresa, os Açores, Paris e Londres. Há
meses, conta, “que onde menos durmo é em casa, mas
são estas viagens que me dão inspiração, e de tanto
make clothes!” But before entering university she took, at her
father’s insistence, a sewing course. “ In my father’s head it
made no sense that someone wanting to design clothes would
not know how to sew. And he was right!”
Thus the first steps were taken in a career of Design and
Fashion. Today, Susana Bettencourt’s life is shared between
Famalicão, where her company is established, the Azores,
Paris and London. There are months, she says, “that home
is where I sleep the less. But these trips are the ones that inspire me and having flown so much I have gotten used to make
the most of o those moments to organize my agenda and plan
the following months”.
Her clothes are planned and created from scratch. Knitwear
is created from the wool yarn and the knitwear becomes a
work of art. Her collections follow a central theme, the result
of a deep research and reflection and they conciliate handicraft with new technologies.

As suas roupas são concebidas e criadas de raiz. Do fio
de lã nasce a malha e a malha transforma-se em peças
de arte. As suas coleções obedecem a um tema central,
fruto de um profundo trabalho de investigação e
reflexão, e conciliam o artesanato com as novas tecnologias.
Exemplo disso é sua mais recente linha, que tem por
base o livro Ways of Seeing. “Cada pessoa tem a sua própria forma de ver as coisas e quis explorar essa ideia. O
elemento principal é um olho humano, integrado em
todas a peças, recorrendo a diferentes técnicas. Uma
das que estou a trabalhar é a impressão em alta frequência, em que um cunho é comprimido no tecido, criando volume numa das partes.”
Susana Bettencourt foi uma das artistas convidadas a participar na 5ª edição do Festival de Arte Urbana Walk&Talk. “Trabalhámos na conceção de t-shirts com
design exclusivo, em que aliamos a moda aos bordados
matiz e richelieu. São técnicas tipicamente açorianas, mas
numa versão mais moderna e atual”, explica.

am working with is high frequency printing, in which a
die is compressed on the cloth, creating volume on one of

– Walk&Talk. “We worked on the creation of T-shirts
with an exclusive design, in which we combine the silk
stich and cut work embroidery. These are typically Azorean
techniques but in a more modern and up-to-date version”, she explains.

de vento, para mais tarde se tornar na maior destilaria

A Lei Seca de 1916 no Ontário, que veio proibir a venda
de álcool, e, mais tarde, as guerras e a globalização contribuiriam para o declínio acentuado desta indústria.

Distillery District. Distillery District is a national
heritage and is considered as such because of its well
preserved architectural integrity that today as happened in the past, reflects a unique historic period. As well

Founded in 1832 by the Gooderham & Worts Company,
the Distillery District started off as a mere windmill,
and later on became one of the largest distilleries of
the British Empire and, for a while, of the world.
But hard times came to change its importance.
Prohibition in 1916 in Ontario, which banned selling
alcohol and, later on, the wars and globalization, contributed to this industry’s steep decline.
But, its purchase in 2001 by private investors chan-

um projeto de comunhão
através da música

nossa conversa foi de uma
hora mas, ao fim de dez minutos, já era possível perceber
que o maestro Henrique Piloto
é uma daquelas pessoas especiais, verdadeiramente apaixonadas pelo que fazem. No
caso dele existem duas grandes paixões - a música e o ensino - que, aliadas, lhe permitem executar aquilo que
considera ser a sua contribuição para a humanidade:
“fazer pessoas felizes através da música”.
É isso que tem feito nos Açores, e continuará a fazer até
2016, através do Projeto Lira Açoriana, que dará a 70
jovens açorianos, com idades compreendidas entre os
14 e os 24 anos, a oportunidade de ter formação intensiva e trabalhar numa Orquestra de Sopro com um maestro de referência.
Durante o projeto, de dois anos, são efetuados quatro
estágios de sete dias, cada um numa ilha diferente dos
Açores, onde os alunos poderão não só trabalhar com
professores credenciados e desenvolver as suas capacidades técnicas e musicais, além de outras competências
como disciplina, autonomia, responsabilidade e pontualidade.
O trabalho desenvolvido durante a semana de estágio
culmina com concertos onde os jovens terão oportunidade de mostrar à comunidade o resultado do seu
empenho, num repertório variado que junta peças de
diferentes autores de renome, incluindo autores açorianos e do continente português.
LIRA AÇOREANA: A COMMUNION
PROJECT THROUGH MUSIC For two
years, 70 young Azoreans will be participating in an innovative project that excels in
a wide training that combines the artistic
nature of music and humanistic values such
as sensitivity, tolerance and cooperation. Our
conversation lasted one hour, but after ten minutes it was
already possible to understand that conductor Henrique
Piloto is one of those special people, truly passionate
about what they do. In his case there are two big passions
– music and teaching – which together, allow him to do
what her considers to be his contribution to humanity:
“to make people happy through music”.
That’s what he’s been doing in the Azores, and will continue doing until 2016, through the Lira Açoriana Project,
which will give 70 young Azoreans, aged between 14 and
24, the opportunity of having an intensive training and
working in an Orquestra de Sopro (Wind Orchestra) with
a renowned conductor.
During the two-year project, there will be four one-week
internships, each of them will be taking place on a different island of the Azores, where the students will be
able to work with accredited teachers and develop their
technical and musical abilities, but also develop competences as discipline, autonomy, responsibility and punctuality.
The work developed during the internship week will end
with a concert where the young people will have the opportunity of showing the community the result of their work,
in a varied repertoire with pieces from various renowned
authors, including Azorean ones and from the Mainland.

Na ilha das Flores, tivemos a oportunidade de assistir a
um concerto inesquecível, onde a cumplicidade entre
os alunos e professores se revelou através de uma performance pautada por momentos de grande energia e,
sobretudo, por momentos de grande emoção.
Mas o papel deste projeto na comunidade envolvente
foi muito além dos dois concertos que marcaram o encerramento deste estágio, um realizado na igreja da
Fajãzinha e outro na Matriz de Santa Cruz. “Durante a
nossa permanência na Ilha das Flores recebemos elementos da banda filarmónica da Fajãzinha para ter formação
connosco e fazer uma participação especial nos concertos. Recebemos, também, alunos do ensino pré-escolar
para uma sessão pedagógica, onde mostrámos os instrumentos e explicámos como funcionavam, e levámos
até um lar de terceira idade um pequeno concerto, proporcionando momentos de grande alegria a pessoas
que, por terem limitações de locomoção, não poderiam,
de outra forma, assistir a um concerto ao vivo.” explica Marco Torre, coordenador do estágio.
O papel da música na sociedade é, de facto, inestimável. É um papel que ultrapassa em muito o entretenimento. “Ao longo da história, a música sempre foi um

We had the opportunity to witness a memorable concert
on Flores Island, where the complicity between students
and teachers transpired through a performance punctuated by moments of great energy and, especially, by
moments of great emotion.
But the role of this project in the involving community
went far beyond the two concerts marking the end of
this internship, one that took place at the Fajãzinha
church and the other at the Matriz de Santa Cruz.
“During our stay on Flores Island, we welcomed elements
of the philharmonic band to have training with us and
have a special participation at the concerts. We also welcomed nursery school students for a pedagogical session,
where we showed the instruments and explained how
they worked, and we also visited a retirement home for
a small concert, giving moments of great joy and emotion to people who, because they have limited mobility,
would not have been able, in any other way, to enjoy

Com isso em mente, no final do projeto será atribuído
um prémio ao aluno que mais se destacar a nível artístico e comportamental, constituído por formação complementar, com todas as despesas incluídas, em Portugal
ou no estrangeiro.

internship explains. The role music plays in society is,
in fact, truly remarkable. It’s a role that is much more
then just entertainment. “Throughout history music
has been always an element of communication. Music
brings together groups of young people who identify
with each other, communicating ideals, feelings and
emotions. We use music for so many different means
such as putting across messages of social intervention,
to make people sleep, to make people wake up, to
relax…Music’s function is practically endless” the conductor Henrique Piloto says. That’s why the training of
musicians is so important also at a human level.
Bearing this in mind, at the end of the project an award
will be given to the student who stands out at an artistic and behavioral level, which includes a supplementary training, all expenses included, in Portugal or
abroad.
At the end of the training the young musicians will take
with them to their Philharmonic Bands the recently
acquired technical, cultural and human knowledge,
thus enlarging the valuable cultural heritage of the
Azores.

d’Edla. O palácio pode ser percorrido livremente ou

Em toda a serra de Sintra, os caminhos são serpenteantes, densamente florestados e respira-se o ar mais

Mouros encima a serra, e a caminhada é longa desde
o centro da vila, embora seja também possível chegar de carro. Todos os outros palácios e o centro são

Mouros. Here it is possible to learn about the remote past
of this place, namely through the archaeological digs that
took place here, where it was discovered that it had been
occupied since the Neolithic period.

"Não quer fazer um restaurante em Lisboa?", atirou-lhe o proprietário do empreendimento hoteleiro, o advogado José Miguel
Júdice. A resposta foi espontânea, conta o chef: "Com
muito gosto, mas não tenho dinheiro.” Júdice não se
deixou demover. "Não se preocupe”, disse. Em pouco
tempo, reuniu mais nove sócios e estavam lançadas
as bases (e o nome) do Eleven. Passados dois anos à
procura do local ideal e outros tantos na concretização
do projeto, no dia 11 do mês 11 de 2004 surgiu um
dos restaurantes de referência da gastronomia nacional – distinguido com uma estrela Michelin.
O espaço, de traços minimalistas e decoração contemporânea, foi implantado no topo do parque Eduardo VII,
no centro de Lisboa, com vista sobre o jardim e a praça
do Marquês de Pombal, paisagem enquadrada pela janela panorâmica que atravessa toda a sala principal. Na
cozinha, o chef pratica uma gastronomia moderna de
inspiração mediterrânica, que resume em poucas palavras: "Cores, perfumes, sabores". E sempre "muita luz nos

signature cuisine in a sophisticated environment, overlooking downtown Lisbon. Restaurant Eleven, led by chef Joachim Koerper, is
one of Portugal’s gastronomical references.
German chef Joachim Koerper worked as a consultant at
Quinta das Lágrimas, Coimbra when he got an unexpected offer. “Would you like to open a restaurant in Lisbon?”
the owner of the enterprise, lawyer José Miguel Júdice
asked him. He gave a spontaneous answer, the chef recalls:
“It would be a pleasure, but I don’t have the money to
do it.” Júdice did not give up. “Don’t you worry” he said.
In a short time he gathered nine other partners and the
foundations (and name) for Eleven were laid. Two years
after having started to look for the perfect venue and two
more to implement the project, on the 11th of month 11
of 2004, the one-star Michelin – restaurant that is a reference of national cuisine – opened to the public.
The venue, with its minimalist traits and contemporary
decoration, is situated at the top of Eduardo VII park, in
the heart of Lisbon, overlooking the garden and Marquês
de Pombal, a view we have from the panoramic bay window which stretches across all of the main dining room.
In the kitchen, the chef cooks modern cuisine with a
Mediterranean touch, which he summarizes in a few

pratos". Os produtos portugueses estão no topo das preferências: destaca o lavagante, a partir do qual criou um
menu completo, o leitão e o salmonete. "O peixe que
temos aqui é tão fabuloso que é um privilégio trabalhar
com ele", garante. E o indispensável bacalhau. "Antes
não gostava, agora adoro".
Joachim Koerper cresceu na cidade alemã de
Saarbrücken, junto à fronteira com a França. O pai, um
banqueiro apreciador de boa gastronomia, levava a família a conhecer os restaurantes da região. "Pedia vários
menus e o que nós não comíamos, comia ele", recorda,
entre risos. Aos 15 anos, já trabalhava num hotel nas
margens do lago Konstanz. Mas sempre sentiu o apelo
de partir para o sul e viajou pela Grécia, Itália, Espanha.
O que o atraía? "O sol, o calor e a alma das pessoas", explica. Fez destes destinos o seu rumo profissional. "Queria
conhecer outras culturas, técnicas, produtos." Antes de
se mudar definitivamente para Portugal, liderava o restaurante Girasol, em Alicante, Espanha, onde conquistou duas estrelas Michelin.
O sucesso não o impediu de arriscar a mudança. "Não

words: “Colors, odors, flavors”. And always “a lot of light
in the dishes”. The Portuguese ingredients are at the top
of his preferences: he highlights lobster from which he created an entire menu, piglet and mullet. “The fish we have
here is so fabulous it is a pleasure to prepare it”, he says.
And the indispensable codfish. “I used to hate it, now I
love it”.
Joachim Koerper grew up in the German city of
Saarbrücken near the border with France. His father, a
gourmet, would take his family on a tour of the area’s restaurants. “He would order several menus and what we
wouldn’t eat, he would, he recalls laughing. At 15, he was
already working in a hotel on the banks of lake Constance.
But he has always felt the desire to move south and he
traveled to Greece, Italy, and Spain. What was it that
attracted him? “The sun, the heat, and people’s souls”,
he explains. He made these destinations his professional
career. “I wanted to get to know new cultures, techniques,
produces”. Before moving to Portugal for good, he was in
charge of restaurant Girasol in Alicante, Spain, where he
got awarded two Michelin stars.
Success did not prevent him from risking a change. “I
didn’t think twice”, he assures in a strong German accent,
with here and there a Spanish expression and a Brazilian
accent. He had several projects in Brazil. The most recent
one is Eleven Rio, which opened in August that has him

sente em casa. "Lisboa é a minha cidade. É muito bonito viver aqui. Temos tudo próximo, o mar, a montanha.
Num momento estamos no Algarve, noutro no Douro".
E é onde pretende continuar a desenvolver o trabalho
iniciado há mais de uma década, mantendo a essência
do projeto inicial. "Queremos fazer um bom trabalho e
crescer um pouco mais."

Quando o capitão Alcobia inicou o seu discurso, o auditório do Museu da Baleia de New Bedford estava repleto de público interessado, vindo de diferentes partes
dos EUA e até da Alemanha.
O Sagres é uma embarcação de três mastros construída
em aço, com velas quadradas no mastro de proa e no
mastro principal e com vela carangueja no mastro de
ré. Tem 22 velas com uma área total de cerca de 2000
metros quadrados, que lhe dão uma velocidade máxima de 17 nós.
Foi desenhado e construído por Blohm & Voss em
Hamburgo, no ano de 1937, para a Marinha Alemã,
tendo começado por se chamar “Albert Leo Schlageter“.
Este navio é o terceiro de uma série de quatro e foi construído como irmão do germânico “Gorch Fock“, que
também serviu de navio-escola e centro pedagógico à
Marinha Alemã.
A seguir à segunda guerra mundial, o “Albert Leo
Schlageter” foi capturado pelos Estados Unidos da
América como saque de guerra. Em 1948, foi vendido
à Marinha Brasileira.
Em 1961, mudou de nome, ao ser adquirido pela
Marinha Portuguesa com o objetivo principal de fazer
dele um navio-escola para treinar cadetes no mar e para
complementar a educação técnica e académica ministrada aos oficiais da Academia Naval.

vessel, Sagres, was escorted into New Bedford
harbour by a parade of boats, in partnership
with the Azorean Maritime Heritage Society
at 9:30 am on July 8th, 2015. The Portuguese
Consul in New Bedford and the Portuguese Navy, with the
generous support of the Luso-American Foundation (FLAD),
had invited the citizens of New Bedford, Fall River and
Brockton to greet and visit the tall ship and to listen to
Captain Paulo Alcobia's presentation about the history of
one of the largest sailing ships in the world.
When the Captain of the NRP Sagres started his lecture, the
auditorium in the New Bedford Whaling Museum was filled
with interested people from different parts of the United
States and some even from Germany
Sagres is a steel-built, three-masted barque with square
sails on the fore and main masts and gaff rigging on the
mizzen mast. She carries 22 sails with an area totalling
about 2,000 square metres, giving her a maximum speed
of 17 knots under sail.
She was designed and built by Blohm & Voss in
Hamburg/Germany in 1937 for the German Navy and was
launched under the name of “Albert Leo Schlageter“.
This vessel is the third in a series of four ships built as a
sister ship to the German “Gorch Fock“, which was also
used as a sail training vessel and education centre by the
German Navy.
After WW-II, “Albert Leo Schlageter“ was kept by the United
States of America as a prize of war. In 1948 she was sold
to the Brazilian Navy.
In 1961, the Portuguese Navy acquired and renamed her with
the main objective of keeping a sail training ship in its fleet

Desde 1962, o Sagres tem efetuado missões de treino com
cadetes da Academia Naval, além de ter concluído duas
viagens de circumnavegação em 1978/79 e 1983/84.
O navio-escola Sagres também visitou por diversas vezes
o porto de Ponta Delgada, em S. Miguel.
A última vez que este célebre veleiro tinha estado em
New Bedford foi em 1996, há quase 20 anos, motivo pelo
qual esta sua mais recente visita teve um significado
especial.
O Sagres participou numa regata entre Filadélfia e
Greenport por ocasião das celebrações do 4 de julho em
Greenport, New Hampshire, e esteve dois dias com a
comunidade portuguesa de Massachusetts, em New
Bedford e Boston, entre os dias 10 e 13 de julho.
Este navio é um Embaixador Português dos Mares e leva
um pouco de Portugal às Comunidades Portuguesas no
estrangeiro.
Tendo o “Infante D. Henrique, o Navegador” como
figura comemorativa, o Sagres vai buscar o seu nome à
cidade e ao porto onde D. Henrique fundou uma escola de navegação, da qual partiram os exploradores dos
oceanos Atlântico, Pacífico e Índico.

Since 1962, Sagres has undertaken training missions with
cadets from the Naval Academy and also completed two circumnavigation voyages in 1978/79 and 1983/84.
Sagres has also visited the harbour of São Miguel/Azores, several times.
Her last visit to New Bedford was in 1996, almost 20 years
ago, therefore this visit was a big occasion.
Sagres participated in a regatta between Philadelphia and
Greenport during the 4th of July celebration in Greenport, NY
and she joined the Portuguese community of Massachusetts
for two days in New Bedford and in Boston, MA from July
10th to July 13th.
Sagres is a Portuguese Ambassador of the Seas and brings a
part of Portugal to the Portuguese communities abroad.
With the celebratory figurehead of “Prince Henry the navigator”, Sagres takes her name from the town and port where
Prince Henry founded his navigational school whence the
explorers of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans set sail.

Fro many, happiness is the synonym of a beach and
a hut. In the Azores this became a reality in 2015
by the hand of entrepreneurs and friends Rodrigo
Herédia and João Reis. Overlooking the vastest
beach on the archipelago, this is the first Eco-Beach
Resort on the island of S. Miguel. The four-star
resort excels in comfort, tranquility, simplicity and
innovation. It s composed by 14 villas, seven of

two bedrooms. All the villas have a small
kitchenette, a living room and a balcony with a
hammock and two arm chairs. If on one side there
is a view overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, on the

Geographic photojournalist António Luís Campos
traveled in the Azores from end to end, looking for great
stories about the island’s every day life. They are the

MONTANHA | PICO - As touradas à corda atingem o
seu expoente máximo na Terceira, mas têm, nos
últimos anos, vindo a ganhar grande popularidade
em várias outras ilhas. O touro, criado em
ganadarias próprias, é simplesmente amarrado com
uma longa corda, no final da qual os “pastores”
controlam até onde ele pode ir. Nos topos do terreno
da corrida há duas linhas marcadas a cal, no chão,
que delimitam até onde o touro pode ir, o ponto a
partir do qual ele não passa - supostamente.
MOUNTAIN | PICO – the rope bullfights are very
popular on Terceira Island and have, in the last few
years, gained more and more popularity on several
other islands. The bull, bred in specifically for this
purpose, is simply tied to a long rope at the end of
which the ‘shepherds’ control where it can g. At the
far end of the ground where the corrida takes place
there are two lines marked in lime which limit
where the bull can go, and from there it cannot –
supposedly- move any further.

the Island of S. Miguel. Chroniclers say that it
was in the village of Povoação that the first settlers of
the Island of S. Miguel disembarked. No wonder that

UM DIA EM...
Senhora do Rosário é de visita obrigatória. Mesmo em
frente está o oceano Atlântico. A orla marítima modificou-se, seguramente, com o passar dos anos e as
vontades humanas. À estrada e ao parque de estacionamento juntou-se um porto de pesca e mais recentemente uma marina para acolher, novamente, quem
aqui quer chegar por via marítima.
Localizada na zona oriental da costa sul da ilha, a 60
quilómetros de Ponta Delgada, a Povoação tem menos
de 7 000 habitantes dispersos por seis freguesias. Andar
a pé pela vila plana, envolta por várias lombas, revela-se um prazer. Não deixe de apreciar os animais existentes no mini jardim zoológico, uma infra-estrutura
única na ilha e situada na envolvência da praça central.
A entrada é gratuita. Bem perto situa-se um antigo moinho de água privado, que preserva toda a sua história,
mas funciona presentemente como loja de artesanato.
Também merece uma visita outro moinho, que foi transformado pela autarquia em Museu do Trigo, em 2004.

building of public interest. Known locally as the church
of the old square, the church of Nossa Senhora do
Rosário is a place you must visit. The Atlantic Ocean
is right in front. The coastline has changed for sure with
the passing of the years and human intervention. There
is now a road, a parking lot and more recently a fishing harbor and a marina to welcome, once again,
those arriving by sea.
Located in the eastern part of the island’s south coast,
60 kilometers far from Ponta Delgada, Povoação has
less than 7.000 inhabitants scattered by six parishes.
It’s a pleasure to stroll through the flat city, surrounded by several elevated plains. Be sure to visit the animals that exist in the mini zoo, a unique infra structure on the island located around the main square.
Free admission. Nearby is an old private watermill
that has preserved all its history and now functions as
a handicraft store. Another mill also deserves a visit,
this time turned into the Museu do Trigo (Wheat
Museum) by the autarchy in 2004.
To recover your energies we recommend a break to taste
the typical local pastry: the fofas. The recipe is more
or less known. The real true secret is the filling.

Não saia do concelho sem contemplar as vistas dos
inúmeros miradouros existentes. Para os mais aventureiros, há vários trilhos pedestres à escolha. Um
dos mais emblemáticos é o do Salto do Prego, no
Faial da Terra. Tem uma extensão de quatro quilómetros e demora cerca de duas horas a percorrer. Pelo
caminho encontrará uma cascata e a aldeia do
Sanguinho, com várias casas de pedra recuperadas.

more daring, there are several treks to choose from.
One of the most famous is Salto do Prego, in Faial da
Terra. It is four kilometers long and takes around two
hours to walk. On the way there you’ll come across a
waterfall and the village of Sanguinho with several
stone houses that have been recovered. Salto do
Prego is one of the most famous treks on
the island. A waterfall complements the
luscious vegetation. Take the opportunity
to go for a swim.

HAND LUGGAGE
On SATA Air Açores’ and SATA
International’s flights, in Economy class
(SATA Classic) passengers are allowed
one hand luggage item in the cabin; it
should not exceed 55cmx40cmx20cm,
and it should not weigh more than 8
kilos. In Business class (SATA Plus) the
dimensions of the hand luggage should
not exceed 56cmx45cmx25cm, and
should not weigh more than 20 kg
which can be divided by two luggage
items. In case you exceed the limits
established above, your suitcase will be
dispatched to the hold, subject to the
payment of a fee. Near the barding
gate, only debit/credit cards are
accepted.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR LOSSES
AND DAMAGES TO LUGGAGE
The liability for lost or damaged luggage
is limited to 1.131 SDR, approximately

homenagem ao conjunto de instituições açorianas que têm
por missão congregar os açorianos e açor descendentes na
diáspora, promovendo a nossa cultura e cuja ação é
indispensável para a projeção da Região além-fronteiras: as
Casas dos Açores.

materializam o rosto dos Açores nas comunidades radicadas
fora do arquipélago, em Portugal continental, no Canadá,
nos Estados Unidos da América, no Brasil e no Uruguai.
As 14 Casas dos Açores partilham objetivos comuns e
funcionam como espaços aglutinadores de açorianos e de
afirmação da açorianidade. São organismos dinâmicos,
promotores e divulgadores de ações de âmbito cultural,
social e formativo, nas suas mais distintas vertentes. Do

Now, in these pages, we stress and pay tribute to several Azorean
institutions whose mission is bringing Azoreans and Azorean
descendants together by promoting our culture. The action taken
by these institutions is essential for projecting the Region beyond
our borders. These institutions are the Houses of the Azores.
Some of these houses were created over 50 years ago, and
materialize the soul of the Azores in the Azorean communities
living outside the islands, whether in mainland Portugal, Canada,
USA, Brazil or Uruguay.
The 14 existing Houses of the Azores share goals and serve as
gathering areas for Azorean communities to state their cultural values.
In fact, these institutions are dynamic organisms which promote and

Houses of the Azores and between them and the Autonomous
Region of the Azores, the World Council of Houses of the Azores
(CMCA) was created back in 1997. This Council has been

os finais de 1893,
iniciava-se a publicação de um interessante projeto
editorial, a “Biblioteca da Autonomia
dos Açores”, cujo primeiro volume, intitulado S.
Miguel em 1893: cousas e pessoas. Cartas reproduzidas
do “Diário de Notícias” de Lisboa, da autoria de Manuel
Emygdio da Silva (1858-1936), pode ser considerado
como um dos primeiros textos de divulgação em larga
escala das belezas e potencialidades turísticas da ilha
de S. Miguel. É certo que outros autores já tinham
anteriormente escrito relatos de viagem similares, em
formato epistolar, como foi o caso de Raimundo
Bulhão Pato (Cartas dos Açores, 1868), mas nunca
com o pendor publicista das crónicas de Emygdio da
Silva, que são uma espécie de “Who’s Who” da sociedade micaelense em finais do século XIX, isto para

THE “AZOREAN SINTRA” By the end of
1893 an interesting editorial project began being published, the “Biblioteca da Autonomia dos Açores”, its first
volume, with the title S. Miguel em 1893: cousas e pessoas. Cartas reproduzidas do “Diário de Notícias” de
Lisboa (S. Miguel in 1893: things and people. Letters
reproduced from the “Diário de Notícias” from Lisbon)
by Manuel Emygdio da Silva (1858-1936), can be considered as one of the first texts to divulge at a large scale
the beauties and touristic potentialities of the Island of
S. Miguel. It is a fact that other authors had written about
similar travels before, in an epistolary format, as was
the case with Raimundo Bulhão Pato (Cartas dos Açores,
1868), but never with the publicizing trait of Emygdio da
Silva’s chronicles, which are a kind of “who’s Who” of
the S. Miguel society in the late 19th century, not to men-

não falar dos milhares de leitores que as apreciaram
nas páginas do Diário de Notícias, então o jornal nacional de referência e de maior tiragem.
A importância desta obra para a história do turismo nos
Açores pode ser melhor avaliada se tivermos em consideração que o seu autor, um dos grandes impulsionadores do excursionismo no nosso país, pertenceu ao
grupo fundador da Sociedade Propaganda de Portugal
em 1906, foi presidente do Conselho de Administração
da Companhia de Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses e
secretário-geral do IV Congresso Internacional do
Turismo, que teve lugar em Lisboa no ano de 1911. Não
se tratava, pois, de mais um viajante que veio conhecer as ilhas, mas de alguém cuja ligação aos caminhos
de ferro (que foram a mola propulsora do turismo) e
ao fenómeno associativo dos Touring Clubs, que
começou então a despontar na Europa, o tornava uma
voz particularmente autorizada no domínio da propaganda turística. Não é por acaso, aliás, que poucos anos

in the Azores can be assessed if we consider that its author, one of the greatest encouragers of excursionism in our
country, belonged to the founding group Sociedade
Propaganda de Portugal (Portugal Propaganda Society) in
1906, he was President of the Board of Directors of the
Portuguese Railways and secretary general of the 4th
International Tourism Congress, which took place in
Lisbon in 1911. It was not therefore the case of a traveler who came to visit the islands but someone who was
connected with the railways (which were the driving force
behind tourism) and to the associative phenomenon of the
Touring Clubs, which had begun to emerge in Europe,
Manuel Emygdio da Silva was one of the first
to divulge Azores’ touristic potentialities.

O vale das Furnas passou a ser identificado como
a “Sintra dos Açores”

“The Azorean Sintra”
volvidos sobre a publicação desta obra e animada pela
crescente escala de vapores nacionais e estrangeiros nas
ilhas açorianas, tenha sido formada, em 1899, a
Sociedade de Propagação das Notícias Micaelenses, sob
o alto patrocínio do Príncipe Alberto do Mónaco.
Foi Manuel Emygdio da Silva quem estabeleceu, numa
passagem muito citada da sua obra, uma analogia
entre o vale das Furnas e outros lugares pitorescos do
veraneio em Portugal, que viria a estar na base da vulgarização do nome de “Sintra dos Açores” aplicado
ao vale das Furnas, o que não deixa de ser ambíguo
se lermos com atenção as palavras do autor: “Ao cabo
de meia hora (...) aparece-nos com todo o esplendor (...)
o formosíssimo e apreciável vale das Furnas, o lugar mais
encantador da ilha de S. Miguel, dos Açores e até, no seu
género, de Portugal, porque, se Sintra lhe sobreleva em arte,
fica-lhe aquém em belezas naturais assim como as Caldas
da Rainha, Gerês, Bom Jesus de Braga etc.”
Efetivamente, a riqueza dos palácios de Sintra não se
compara à dos discretos chalets das Furnas, mas a
exuberância subtropical dos parques e jardins deste
vale, bem como o seu impressionante parque termal,
não só suplantava as frondosas sombras de Sintra
como fazia esquecer os recantos mais pitorescos da
sua serra. Neste sentido, portanto, o vale das Furnas
não pode ser identificado como a “Sintra dos Açores”,
pois é-lhe claramente superior em belezas naturais,
mas tendo em consideração que Sintra foi, na segunda metade do século XIX, a principal estância de
veraneio da sociedade lisboeta e que as Furnas também desempenharam esse papel relativamente à sociedade local, então, neste caso, não custa a aceitar para
esse romântico e verdejante vale micaelense a designação merecida de “Sintra dos Açores”.

made him a considered voice in what concerned touristic
propaganda. It’s no coincidence that a few years later
after the publishing of this work and motivated by the
increasing number of national and international steamboats in the Azorean islands, the Sociedade de Propagação
das Notícias Micaelenses was created, in 1899, under
the high patronage of Prince Albert of Monaco.
It was Manuel Emygdio who established, in a very often
quoted passage of his work, an analogy between Furnas
valley and other picturesque places for summer vacation
in Portugal, which would be the basis for Furans valley
being called “the Azorean Sintra”, which is in the least
ambiguous if we carefully read the author’s words: “After
half an hour […] we come to Furnas valley in all its
splendor and extreme beauty, the most charming place on
the Island of S. Miguel, Azores and, even in its kind, in
Portugal, because if Sintra outweighs in art it nevertheless falls short in natural beauty as well as Caldas da
Rainha, Gerês , Bom Jesus de Braga, etc.”
In fact, the richness of Sintra’s palaces cannot be compared to the discrete chalets in Furnas, but this valley’s subtropical exuberance of parks and gardens, as well as its
impressive thermal park not only superseded Sintra’s leafy
shades but also made us forget the most picturesque spots
of its mountains. In that sense, therefore, Furnas valley
cannot be identified as “the Azorean Sintra” as it is clearly superior in natural beauty, but taking into consideration that Sintra was, in the second half of the 19th century, Lisbon’s society main summer resort and that Furnas
also played that role with the local society, then, in that
case, it is not hard to accept the designation of “the
Azorean Sintra” for that romantic and luscious valley on
S. Miguel.

que se nasce na segunda mais pequena ilha
dos Açores, onde a
terra é pouca, o mar é
vasto e o sonho é
enorme…
A Graciosa faz parte da minha memória primeira e do
meu imaginário afectivo. Foi nesta ilha que despertei
para a vida, para o mundo e para o conhecimento das
coisas. Saí um dia da Graciosa, mas a Graciosa não saiu
de mim – ela navega em mim, carrego-a dentro de
mim. Por isso mesmo reivindico aquilo que tenho
vindo a chamar de graciosensidade, conceito que criei
a partir de açorianidade de Vitorino Nemésio. E a
minha graciosensidade é precisamente o meu apego
e amor incondicional pela ilha Graciosa, é a minha
marca de identidade e de identificação com o espaço
e imaginário graciosenses.
Com 61Km2 e 4 300 habitantes, a Graciosa é conhecida por “ilha branca”, ao que se julga saber devido
à abundância de traquito, a rocha que vista ao longe
terá dado a impressão de ser branca aos olhos dos

To be born on the second smallest island of the Azores
– where the land is scarce, the sea is vast and dreams
huge… has its consequences.
Graciosa is part of my early memories and emotional
imaginary. I awoke to life, to the world and knowledge of things on this island. I left Graciosa one day, but
Graciosa did not leave me – it sails in me, I bear it
inside me. That’s why I’ve been claiming what I’ve
been calling graciosensidade a concept I created from
Vitorino Nemésio’s azoreaness. And my graciosensidade is precisely my attachment and unconditional love
for Graciosa Island; it’s my identity identification
mark with the space and imaginary of Graciosa.
With 612km2 and 4,300 inhabitants, Graciosa is
known as the “white island”, thought to be because
of the abundance of trachyte, the rock that at a distance seemed to be white to the eyes of the first settlers. This is the reason for the island’s toponymy:
Barro Branco (white clay), Pedras Brancas (white stones), Serra Branca (white mountain).
This island is attractive to the visitors for its landscape of flat land, rounded mountains covered with

um riquíssimo ecossistema, a Graciosa é, desde 2007,
Reserva da Biosfera declarada pela UNESCO.
Se o leitor quiser fazer uma “viagem ao centro da
Terra”, não se fique por Júlio Verne e venha visitar a
inquietante beleza da Furna do Enxofre, fenómeno
vulcanológico raro e geologicamente único no
mundo. Trata-se de uma depressão existente no subsolo da Caldeira – cratera de uma antigo vulcão –
onde se dá um fenómeno de libertação de gases sulfurosos provenientes de uma massa fluída em permanente ebulição localizada no interior mais recôndito da caverna. Comunica com o exterior através de
duas aberturas e, em 1939, na maior delas, foi
construída uma imponente escadaria (em caracol) de
acesso, em alvenaria aparelhada, hoje apontada como
um exemplo feliz em termos de engenharia ambiental. Descendo os 184 degraus da referida escadaria,
deparamos com um profundo túnel com cerca de
100 metros de profundidade. No fundo, uma enorme gruta, com abóbodas de 80 metros de altura,
revestida de estalactites e um lago subterrâneo, de
água fria e sulfurosa, com cerca de 130 metros de
diâmetro e 15 metros de profundidade máxima. Um
assombro!
Emoldurada por vistosos moinhos de vento, Santa
Cruz, situada na costa norte e sede do concelho, é uma
vila pitoresca com ruas desafogadas e belos exemplares de edificação senhorial. Impõe-se também visitar
São Mateus (Praia), Guadalupe e Luz, típicas povoações rurais com belíssimas casas brancas rodeadas de
campos de cultivo.
Mas o melhor que a Graciosa tem são os graciosenses – gente afável, alegre, hospitaleira, comunicativa
e sempre disponível para os comes e bebes… E esta
é, sem dúvida, uma maneira de ser feliz.

disquieting beauty of Furna do Enxofre, a volcanological phenomenon that is rare and unique in the world.
It is an underground tunnel of Caldeira – a crater of
a former volcano – where the phenomenon of the release of sulphurous gases takes place which originate in
permanently boiling fluid mass located in the innermost of the grotto. It communicates with the outside
through two openings and, in 1939, an imposing,
winding staircase in masonry was built in the largest
of them, which has been considered a successful example of environmental engineering. Going down the 184
steps of this staircase, we notice a deep 100-meter
tunnel. At the bottom a huge grotto with 80-meter
high vaults, covered in stalactites and an underground
lake of cold and sulphurous waters, around 130 meter
wide and 15 meters deep. Amazing!
Surrounded by eye-catching windmills, Santa Cruz,
located on the north coast and seat of the council, is
a picturesque village with wide streets and nice samples of manor houses. One should also visit São Mateus
(Praia), Guadalupe and Luz, typical rural villages
with very beautiful white houses surrounded by fields.
But the best of Graciosa are its inhabitants – friendly,
joyful, welcoming and communicative people always
ready to eat and drink…This is, no doubt, a way to
be happy.
