Noordkaap in Lisbon
In 2011, the Dutch artist initiative Noordkaap launched an international exhibition program. Noordkaap examines current issues in society
and produces socially engaged art projects. The program, that runs
until the end of 2012, investigates the rise of Populism in Europe,
through activism and conceptual art. Noordkaap travels for the course
of two years in Europe with a growing exhibition program produced
and shown in six cities: Munich, Istanbul, Cologne, Budapest, Lisbon
and Dordrecht. The tour is a frame with room for expansion and
deepening. Discussions and brainstorming sessions with international
partners and artists during the program shape the side program.
The artists are encouraged to delve into local phenomena and current
social developments in the respective cities.

Based on the colonial exhibition in Porto, 1934, and the Exposição
do Mundo Português in Lisbon, 1940, the artists researched in
different archives the aesthetics and the self-representation and
presentation of the colonies, during these exhibitions. Their main
interest lied in the colonial perspective and the way of presenting
the alien in Portugal.

During the exhibition Noordkaap will realise a series of public screenings at the LXFactory showing collected material, video works and
interviews with artists form cities Noordkaap visited.
Super Burro
The fifth exhibition of the tour can be seen at the LXFactory from
September 1st until September 10th, 2012. The exhibition shows works
of international artists realised in Munich, Istanbul, Cologne and
Budapest. In addition Noordkaap works with a group of artists on site
specific art pieces and art interventions in Lisbon.

Art & the rise of Populism Noordkaaps program examines the influence
of populist movements on European society. How do countries deal
with the rise of Populism? How do citizens respond to Populism? And
how do artists relate to this? ‘Container’ concepts such as Extremism,
Fundamentalism and Opportunism, are phenomena, just as Populism,
that are difficult to grasp and capture. Nevertheless, their influence on
everyday society can be properly analysed.
Noordkaap doesn’t just want to display a negative attitude toward
populist strategies, but the program also leaves space to bring the art
to a wider audience, with similar strategies.
Not only does Noordkaap venture outside her own country’s borders,
but also outside the walls of the art institution. Much like a politician,
who looks for the community’s support for his program during campaign time, Noordkaap journeys through Europe. Through her program, Noordkaap aims to contribute to public debate, while creating
a more supportive audience base for socially engaged and activist art
from the Netherlands and the host cities.

Noordkaap em Lisboa
Em 2011, o colectivo de artistas sediados na Holanda, Noordkaap,
lançaram um programa de uma exposição internacional. Noordkaap analisa questões atuais na sociedade e produz projetos de arte
socialmente engajados. O programa, que decorre até o final de 2012,
investiga a ascensão do populismo na Europa, através do ativismo e
da arte conceptual. Noordkaap viaja durante dois anos na Europa com
um programa de exposições em permanente construção e apresentado em seis cidades: Munique, Istambul, Colônia, Budapeste, Lisboa
e Dordrecht. As discussões e sessões de brainstorming com os parceiros internacionais e os artistas vão moldando o programa de cada
exposição. Os artistas são convidados a mergulhar em fenómenos
locais e atuais, no âmbito das situações sociais experienciadas nas
respectivas cidades.

Factory mostrando as obras, vídeos e entrevistas com artistas que
integram a Noordkaap em cada cidade visitada.
Enquadramento:
A arte & a ascensão do populismo
Noordkaap examina a influência dos movimentos populistas na
sociedade europeia. Como é que os países lidam com a ascensão do
populismo? Como respondem os cidadãos ao populismo? E como é
que os artistas se relacionam com tudo isto?
Super Burro
Conceitos “contentor” como fundamentalismo, extremismo, e oportunismo, tal como o populismo, são difíceis de entender e captar. No
entanto, a sua influência no quotidiano da sociedade pode ser devidamente analisada. Noordkaap não quer apenas exibir uma atitude
negativa em relação às estratégias populistas.
A quinta exposição desta viagem pela Europa pode ser vista na
LXFactory entre 1 e 10 de Setembro de 2012. A exposição mostra obras
de artistas internacionais realizadas em Munique, Istambul, Budapeste
e Colónia. Noordkaap também trabalha com um grupo de artistas em
peças específicas e intervenções artísticas em Lisboa.
O programa também deixa espaço para trazer a arte para um público
mais amplo, com estratégias semelhantes. Noordkaap não se aventura
apenas para fora das fronteiras do seu próprio país, mas também fora
dos muros da instituições de arte. Muito parecido com um político, que
procura o apoio da comunidade durante o tempo de campanha.
Artisticas:
Através de seu programa, Noordkaap visa contribuir para o debate público, ao criar uma base de apoio para públicos socialmente engajados
e arte ativista e politicamente comprometida.
