passageiros, incrementamos a nossa oferta de voos para seu
benefício. Neste sentido, reforçámos os voos na rota Ponta
Delgada/Porto/Munique colocando à sua disposição dois
voos semanais, um ao sábado e outro à terça-feira, que lhe
vão permitir viajar de uma forma mais flexível e de acordo
com a sua disponibilidade de tempo. Com esta segunda
ligação semanal, o total de lugares oferecidos, este ano,
entre os Açores e Munique é de 23.040, que se juntam aos
24.090 lugares oferecidos entre Açores e Frankfurt.
De facto, em 2012 a SATA proporcionará a maior
conectividade de sempre entre os Açores e o Mundo, por
meio de novas rotas, reforço de frequências, representações
comerciais em novos mercados e estabelecimento de novas
parcerias com outras companhias aéreas de referência: um
momento alto na consecução de uma fulcral dimensão do
nosso objeto social, ligar os Açores ao Mundo.
Gerar atividade económica nos Açores é, de igual modo,
parte integrante do nosso objeto social. Assim, é com grato
prazer que lhe dou nota da ocorrência dos primeiros voos
de treino em Santa Maria – voos base em A320 – que deram
início à formação no Centro de Formação Aeronáutica dos
Açores. Estas formações, muitas das quais destinadas a
formandos estrangeiros, são resultado da rentabilização feita
pela SATA dos seus recursos e dos recursos locais e
contribuem positivamente para a economia da Região.
Gostaria, ainda, de referir o prémio internacional de
desenvolvimento de Software “Agility Award" recebido pela
SATA, pelo terceiro ano consecutivo, desta feita referente ao
desenvolvimento da Aplicação de Gestão de Vendas a Bordo,
o que dá ótima nota da capacidade inovadora da SATA.
Por último, gostaria de salientar dois factos dignos de
registo: o lançamento de um novo motor de busca para
tarifas promocionais no sítio www.sata.pt, com o objetivo
de dar ainda mais visibilidade e total transparência à
oferta de tarifas promocionais, inclusive as muitas que se
destinam a residentes nos Açores. Note-se que, no
primeiro trimestre de 2012, 30% dos residentes dos
Açores viajaram com tarifas promocionais.
O segundo facto digno de registo foi a obtenção no Grupo
SATA de resultados consolidados positivos em 2011: um
ano de forte crise nacional e com o preço do petróleo a
atingir um recorde histórico. Estes resultados positivos
foram alcançados graças a uma resoluta orientação para a
redução de custos e aumento de produtividade de todos os
colaboradores SATA, razão pela qual deixo aqui um voto de
agradecimento a todos os que se esforçam diariamente para

Welcome aboard!
In these summer months in which that opportunity arises of
making a longer trip, we present suggestions which, no doubt,
meet your highest expectations: the cosmopolitan city of London
which this year will host world’s biggest spots event: the Olympic
Games and the charming Azorean islands of Flores and Corvo,
authentic oases of nature in a pure state, made even richer by its
inhabitants charming hospitality.
It’s also during the summer when there are more passengers, that
we increase the number of our flights for your benefit. We have
therefore reinforced our flight son the route Ponta
Delgada/Oporto/Munich/ putting at your disposal two weekly
flights, one on Saturdays and the other on Tuesdays, which will
enable you to travel in a more flexible way and according to the
time you have available on your agenda. With this second weekly
connection, the total number of seats made available this year
between the <Azores and Munich is of 23.040 to which 24.090
are added in seats available between the Azores and Frankfurt.
In fact, in 2012 SATA will make available its largest connectivity
ever between the Azores and the World, by means of new routes, a
reinforcement of flight frequency, sales representatives in new markets
and the establishment of new partnerships with other renowned
airline companies: a high moment in the achievement of the central
dimension of our social object: to connect the Azores to the World.
To generate economical activity in the Azores is, likewise, an
integral part of our social object. Therefore, it’s with extreme
pleasure that I make public the first training flights in Santa
Maria – basic flights in A320 – which initiated the training at the
Centro de Formação Aeronáutica dos Açores. These training
sessions, many of which for foreign trainees, are the result of the
monetization by SATA of its resources and of the local resources,
thus positively contributing to the economy of the Region.
I would also like to refer the international award SATA got for
software development: “Agility Award. This happens for the third
year in a row, this time it has to do with the development of the
Application for the Management of Onboard Sales, which denotes
SATA’s excellent innovative capacity.
Finally, I’d like to point out two facts worthy of note: the launching
of a new search engine for promotional fares at the site www.sata.pt,
whose objective is to give more visibility and total transparency to the
promotional fares that are available, including the many that are
available to those living in the Azores. Note that in the first quarter
of 2012, 30% of Azores’ residents traveled with promotional fares.
The second fact worthy of note was SATA Group having achieved
consolidated and positive results in 2011: a year of a strong national
crisis and with the price of oil rocketing to a historical record. These
positive results were achieved thanks to the resolute orientation in the
sense of reducing the costs and increasing the productivity of all SATA’s
collaborators who endeavor on a daily basis to please you and surprise
you as a SATA customer. To all of them my sincere thank you.

onde os formandos serão preparados para situações de
combate a incêndios, emergências e salvamento para
além do serviço geral e operacional a bordo.
SATA STARTS ITS FIRST TRAINING FLIGHTS
IN SANTA MARIA
Training at the Centro de Formação Aeronáutica dos Açores
in Santa Maria is already a reality. The first training flights
took place in May, in A320s, and had 4 trainees.
The Centro de Formação Aeronáutica will have fullyequipped training rooms with all types of simulators for
emergency situations where trainees will be prepared for
situations of fire fighting, emergencies and rescue apart from
the general and operational service on board.

has awarded SATA, for the third year in a row, the
award “Agility Award”.
This was due to the developing of the Application for the

every single sale on board, on SATA Internacional flights,
through a simple interface with total support for cell phones.
By adopting this application, crewmembers will have a more
accurate and timely access to information.

conferência científica
intitulada “ The Nordic
Tourists in the Atlantic
Islands of Azores,
Canaries and Madeira”,
onde foram apresentados vários artigos científicos,
dos quais seis serão escolhidos para serem
publicados numa edição especial da revista sueca
“Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and
Tourism”.
Na conferência estiveram presentes, além de
associados, colaboradores, parceiros, representantes
de unidades hoteleiras e agentes de viagem,
investigadores da Universidade dos Açores, do
Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão, da
Universidade Lusíada, da Universidade da Madeira,
e também da Universidade de Las Palmas.

The Observatório do Turismo dos Açores
promoted on the 27th April a scientific conference
with the title “ The Nordic Tourists in the
Atlantic Islands of Azores, Canaries and
Madeira”, where several scientific papers were
presented, of which six will be chosen to be
published in a special edition of the Swedish
magazine “Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality
and Tourism”.
The conference had the presence of, apart from
associates, collaborators and partners,
representatives of hotels and travel agencies,
researchers of the University of Azores, of the
Economy and Management Institute of the
Lusíada University, of the University of Madeira
and also of the University of Las Palmas.
Artigos científicos sobre o turismo nórdico
nos Açores, Madeira e Canárias vão integrar uma edição
especial de uma revista sueca dedicada ao turismo,
promovendo o turismo na região dos Açores e também
a SATA enquanto operadora nos destinos referenciados.
Scientific articles on the Scandinavian tourism in the Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands will be
part of a special edition of a Swedish magazine dedicated to tourism, promoting tourism in the

anos no Havai, representando assim um regresso à
pureza original.
O antigo atleta olímpico de saltos para a água e
actual Director Desportivo do circuito, Niki Stajkovic
confirmou no terreno as características únicas do
Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo para a prática desta
modalidade. Uma visão partilhada pelo britânico
Gary Hunt, o detentor do título mundial, que não
esconde a “grande expectativa de competir nos
Açores num cenário que promete”.
Entre a mais pura natureza e as paisagens urbanas,
são muitas as novidades da edição deste ano do
circuito mundial, mantendo-se apenas inalterada
uma etapa de 2011. O arranque terá lugar em França
(23 Junho), seguindo-se a Noruega (7 Julho), Açores
(21 Julho), Irlanda (4 Agosto), E.U.A. (25 Agosto),
Reino Unido (8 Setembro) e Oman (28 Setembro).

The Azores are for the first time on the route of the Red Bull
Cliff Diving Word Series, a choice which is in tune with the
lush nature of the islet of Vila Franca do Campo – no doubt
one of the most kept and preserved jewels of the Island of
São Miguel. This scenery of the purest nature brings to mind
the origins of a sport that started over 200 years ago in
Hawaii, this representing a return to its original purity.
The former Olympic diver and current Sports Director of
the circuit, Niki Stalkovic, has confirmed in loco the
unique characteristics of the Vila Franca do Campo islet
for this type of sport. This opinion is shared by the
British Gary Hunt, who holds the world title and who is
“looking forward to competing in the Azores in such a
promising scenery”.
Among the purest of natures and urban landscaped, there
are many new things in this year’s edition of the world
circuit; there is only one stage which remains unchanged.
The circuit will be staring in France on June 23rd, followed
by Norway on July 7th, the Azores 21st July, Ireland on the
4th August, the USA on the 25th August, United Kingdom
on September 8th and Oman on September 28th

rompante na sua vida. Dirige uma companhia, encena peças,
representa memoravelmente. Maria do Céu Guerra é uma
das maiores figuras do teatro português.

Céu Guerra quando tomou contacto com a cultura açoriana:
ouviu o escritor Vitorino Nemésio cantar as sapateias; participou em recitais da poeta Natália
Correia; mergulhou na biografia do pensador Antero de
Quental. “Os Açores eram algo que estava na minha
cabeça, no meu coração, na minha vida”, explica.
Depois, passou três meses no Faial a filmar a adaptação
televisiva do romance Mau Tempo no Canal. “Tudo isto
me deixou uma marca profunda de fascínio pelos
Açores”, confessa.
Queria ser escritora, mas cedo descobriu os palcos. “O
teatro era uma forma de expressão mais íntima, mais
vital, mais próxima do meu carácter”, explica. Começou
pela Casa da Comédia, passou pelo Teatro Experimental
de Cascais, sempre incomodada pela censura. Depois
da revolução do 25 de Abril de 1974, foi para a estra-

theater. She still had in mind to be a writer and theater was not in her plans when Maria do Céu Guerra came
into contact with the Azorean culture: she heard writer
Vitorino Nemésio sing sapateias; she participated in recitals of poet Natália Correia: she immersed in the biography
of thinker Antero de Quental. “The Azores were something that were in my head, in my heart, in my life”, she
explains. Afterward, she spent three months on Faial filming the television adaptation of the novel Mau Tempo
no Canal. “All this deeply marked my fascination for the
Azores “, she admits.
She wanted to be a writer, but she discovered the stage early
on. “The theater was a way of expressing oneself more intimately, more vitally, closer to my character”, she explains.
She started at Casa da Comédia; she also worked at Teatro
Experiental de Cascais, the censorship always biting at her
heels. After the 25th April revolution, she took to the road

oportunidade para tudo”. E fundou aquela que é a sua
casa artística até hoje: a companhia de teatro A Barraca.
Nessa nova fase, pôde cumprir a sua visão sobre a
função do teatro. “Falar da vida, das aspirações, das
necessidades das pessoas que temos diante de nós. O
teatro pode transformar a vida”, garante. Levaram à cena
autores portugueses como Fernão Mendes Pinto ou Gil
Vicente, representaram os grandes autores universais:
Brecht, Lorca, Shakespeare, com Maria do Céu Guerra
no palco e nos bastidores. “Faço teatro tal como gosto
e isso passa por ter um papel na produção, na direcção
e na representação”.
Dentro da sua arte, não se cingiu a um género. Fez
drama, comédia e tragédia. Declamou poesia e fez
monólogos. “Não tive muito tempo para perceber qual
era o meu género. Não me preocupei com isso”. O
público reconhece o trabalho e enche os auditórios
onde actua. O segredo? “Tenho uma grande curiosidade pelo público. Saber o que é que lhe interessa, mais
do que o que interessa a mim.” É este o caminho independente que pretende seguir, à margem dos circuitos
comerciais da televisão e do cinema. “Não gosto de ser
uma peça na engrenagem.”

her artistic house: the Barraca theater company.
In this new stage of her life, she was able to accomplish
her vision on the function of theater. “To speak about life,
aspirations, the needs of the people who are in front of
us. Theater can change life”, she guarantees. They played Portuguese authors such as Fernão Mendes Pinto or
Gil Vicente, they played the great universal authors:
Brecht, Lorca. Shakespeare, with Maria do Céu Guerra on
stage and backstage. “ I act as I like and this means I
like to have a part in the production, in the direction and
in the acting.”
Within her art she did not stick to one genre. She played
drama, comedy and tragedy. She read poetry and did monologs. “ I did not have time to understand what my genre
was. I never cared about that”. The public recognizes her
work and fills the auditoriums where she performs. The
secret? “I am very curious about the public. I like to know
what they are interested in, more than what interests me.”
This is the independent path she wants to follow, not integrated in the commercial circuits of television and cinema.
“ I don’t like being a cog in the wheel.”
“To act out a play is to learn a lot. It’s not only
memorizing words and movements. It’s to enter
a universe, a life process”, the actress admits.

In its squares and avenues there are numerous
motives relating to the most mediatized sport
event at worldwide level. The English capital will
be hosting, between the 27th July and the 12th August, the
Summer Olympics; and, between the 29th August and the
9th September the Paralympic Games. London will, therefore, become the first city on the planet to be the centerpiece of the Olympic Games for three times, a privilege which
is justified by the singularity of a multi cultural metropolis
where more than 300 languages are spoken.

Piccadilly is our starting point for a visit to the Games’ headquarters, traveling on the famous London Underground, the
oldest and largest underground services in the world, whose
stations contrast with the very modern equipment where
the several competitions will take place.
The Olympic Torch arrived in the United
Kingdom on the 18th May and is touring the
country; it will be arriving in London on the
weekend prior to the beginning of the Games.

Olympic Park holds the imposing stadium which will be
the centerpiece of endless emotions throughout 2 weeks.

from where we could observe, at the time we visited the
city, at which pace the works were progressing.
The roof and the lateral area, where enormous images of
athletes and flags of the countries participating will be
painted, materialize an idea of design which aims at creating a structure similar to the muscles of the human body.
All around, everything has to do with the games, from the
store with the official products to the large stores of wellknown brands. Each in their own way is displaying this
major event about to take place in the English capital.
Our London trip is about to end. Our visit of mythical
places, race walking with a population who never stops,
is only to be compared to the flashes of tourists who gather around Buckingham Palace, to feast their eyes on the
imposing official residence of the British monarchy.
The capital of England is the first city in the

Assim escreve Domingos Lobo (pseudónimo do crítico literário José Santos), autor multifacetado com

The fragments which make up the narrative body of this
novel are sensitive notes of a reality the author has experienced, of a space, the Azores, reinvented here in all

Thus writes Domingos Lobo (pen name of literary critic
José Santos), a multifaceted author with theatre, journalism, novel and poetry works, in the preface of the book

Maybe because travels play an important part in the author’s life, she is a SATA Internacional flight attendant,

Na ilha de São Miguel nasce o amor imortalizado no
livro e é nos seus recantos poéticos, aconchegantes e
bucólicos que a personalidade da protagonista se forma
e evoluí. É entre o mar e os campos de São Miguel que
se adensam os pensamentos e sentimentos que constituem as peças mais delicadas desta história.
A par da história de amor de uma pureza incomum,
surgem outras narrativas de vida, de personagens
muito intensas e dignas cuja existência está intimamente imbricada na cultura açoriana.
O livro, que começou por ser um projeto de presente muito pessoal para família e amigos, ultrapassou

and friends, has gone beyond its initial objective and has
acquired a life of its own by making itself known and available to more people. Thus, naturally, the first edition made
its appearance.
Because reading is somewhat also traveling, it’s worth reading this novel, abandoning yourself to a story with a captivating writing which transports our spirit to an island as
mysterious and beautiful as not many places are.

esde cedo que Paulo do Vale encontrou a sua vocação na oficina de ourives. Ao labor quotidiano de artesão
e ao trabalho criativo em projecto,
junta a dedicação graciosa à manutenção do tesouro do Senhor Santo
Cristo dos Milagres e ao ofício de
avaliador oficial e ensaiador da Casa da Moeda. Como artista, tem tido um percurso reconhecidamente invulgar, apesar da sua juventude e da insularidade. Foi, no entanto, em
2004, que surgiu a grande novidade: Paulo do Vale descobre
o “ouro negro dos Açores”.
Não sendo Portugal um país produtor de materiais gemológicos, foi com agrado que o artista reconheceu a beleza e as
potencialidades do basalto insular, quando aplicado em jóias
de prata e de ouro de tradição portuguesa. O basalto, uma
conhecida rocha vulcânica negra, não é, gemologicamente
falando, uma pedra preciosa, nem um material nobre tradicional. Todavia, no contexto em que Paulo do Vale o utiliza nas suas criações, passa a ter um valor quase mítico: é
um pouco dos Açores e de Portugal que ali está. Este terá
sido um forte argumento para a escolha de um colar da sua
autoria como presente de Estado à Rainha da Jordânia,
durante a vista oficial do Presidente da República àquele
país do Médio Oriente.
Funcionando as jóias não apenas como acessórios de moda,
mas também como elementos simbólicos, por vezes até como
talismãs, o facto de nestas estar materializada uma porção da
terra-mãe confere-lhes um significado singular de grande nobre-

THE AZORES’ BLACK GOLD There is
gold in the Azores and it’s black! It’s not the gold
and noble metal, nor the increasingly rare hidrocarbonate! It’s the Azorean basalt of unique
jewels, created with the quality seal of artist
Paulo do Vale. Paulo do Vale found his vocation as a jeweller at an early age. To the daily labour as a craftsman and the creative work in projects, he adds his gracious dedication to the maintenance of the treasure of the Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres and
the trade of official evaluator at the Casa da Moeda mint. As an
artist, he has had an uncommon route, despite his youth and origin. It was, however, in 2004 that the big news arrived:
Paulo do Vale discovers the “black gold of the Azores”.
With Portugal not being a producer of gems, the artist was pleased
to see the beauty and potential of the basalt, when applied to silver and gold jewels with Portuguese tradition. The basalt, a known
black volcanic rock, is not a precious stone, nor a noble traditional
material.
However, in the context in which Paulo do Vale uses it in his creations, it almost has a mythical value: there is a bit of the Azores
and Portugal in there. This played a strong part in the selection of
one of his necklaces as a State Gift to the Queen of Jordan, during
the Portuguese President’s visit to the Middle Eastern country.

Vale acrescenta-se o seu trabalho manual, o único original
nos Açores, na mais antiga tradição da ourivesaria portuguesa, e o enriquecimento que algumas das peças têm com aplicação de outras gemas, como, por exemplo, os diamantes.
O design, simplicidade e contemporaneidade destas jóias,
que são irrepetíveis, têm merecido reconhecimento, a vários
níveis, não só nas sucessivas participações que tem registado no espaço dedicado aos novos criadores na mais importante feira de joalharia nacional, a Portojóia, como também
com prémios nacionais de grande relevo, como o primeiro prémio no concurso VIP Jóias de 2006 e um honroso terceiro lugar no concurso de design de joalharia do Museu
da Presidência da República, em 2007, tendo vencido em
2008 o concurso promovido pelo Museu Berardo, entre 200
designers, alguns deles internacionais.
Working the jewels not only as fashion accessories, but also as
symbolic elements, sometimes even as talismans, the fact that in
them is materialised a portion of the motherland confers on them
a singular meaning of great nobility, thus the expression “black gold”.
Besides this interesting symbolism, to the value of the pieces is
added his manual labour, in the oldest tradition of Azorean jewellery-making and their enrichment by the application of other gems
such as diamonds.
The design, simplicity and modernity of these unrepeatable pieces have
earned recognition at various levels, not only in the successive participation at spaces for new creation at Portugal’s most important jewellery fair Portjóia, and with prizes such as 1st place in the VIP Jóias
of 2006 contest and a honorouble 3rd place in the jewellery design
contest at the Portuguese Presidency Museum in 2007. In 2008, he
won the contest promoted by the Berardo Museum beating 200 other
designers, some of them international.

FLORES, A NATURAL NAME
Part of the UNESCO worldwide network of
Biosphere Reserves, Flores, the island situated most to the east of the Azores and of
Europe, has a landscape which hides endless
paradises. Peace, tranquility, breathtaking beauty. To
visit Flores enables us to penetrate a splendorous landscape.
Late one morning, a transparency of the first contact on the
small runway of the Archipelago’s most eastern island
takes over us, when we notice the timid glance of the
inhabitants of Flores observing whoever steps out of the
SATA Air Açores plane.

Duas acolhedoras vilas, Santa Cruz e Lajes,
servem de ponto de partida para ir à descoberta
das atrações naturais e turísticas que a ilha proporciona.
Fazemos a pé o trajeto entre o aeroporto e o hotel,
onde nos recebem com grande amabilidade e sugerem uma volta pela ilha. Em pano de fundo, no amplo
janelão da sala de estar, avista-se o Corvo, imagem
que ora se perde, ora reaparece por entre a bruma.
O circuito pelas Flores, que tem 17 quilómetros de
comprimento, começa por Santa Cruz, principal centro populacional da ilha.
Pode fazer-se de táxi, por ser mais rápido e mais cómodo, mas a melhor forma de conhecer tanta beleza é
andar a pé pelos antigos caminhos dos florentinos,
na sua labuta diária.
À saída da vila, avista-se uma vigia da baleia, local
de ancestral paciência, onde noutros tempos se
anunciava a novidade – cetáceo à vista - que levava os homens a correr para o mar, munidos de remos
e arpão.
The two welcoming villages of Santa Cruz and
Lajes serve as a starting point for us to set off
to discover the natural and touristic attractions
of the island. We walk between the airport and the
hotel, where we are welcomed with a special kindness
and it is suggested we take a tour of the island. In the
background, through the large window, one can see Corvo,
an image that appears here and then through the mist.
The tour around Flores, which is 17 meters long, starts
in Santa Cruz, the island’s main populated center.
You can take a taxi but the best way to get to know so
much nature is to walk along the paths the people from
Flores used to take in the past while seeing to their daily
chores.

tower, an ancestral place of patience where in the past the

da Região, distingue-se pelas suas cascatas e lagoas,
pequenos paraísos escondidos na floresta laurissilva.
Parámos na caldeira das sete lagoas para as apreciar:
a Funda ou Verde (com margens revestidas de hortênsias), a Branca, a Seca, a Comprida, a Rasa, a Lomba,
mais afastada e rodeada de pastos, e a Funda das
Lajes, que é a maior e mais bonita.
Pelo caminho, a Rocha dos Bordões presenteia-nos
com um espetacular fenómeno geológico originado
pela solidificação do basalto em estrias verticais.
Vamos a pé para a cascata da Ribeira Grande, uma
queda de centenas de metros com cerca de vinte
jorros de água, que se precipitam no mar, outros que
formam uma lagoa onde se pode nadar e tomar
banho.
No regresso, jantámos peixe fresco e bebemos o melhor néctar vínico regional no simpático restaurante
de D. Rosa, uma micaelense que optou por viver mais
a ocidente.

On our way, we passed Rocha dos Bordões, which offers
us a spectacular geological phenomenon originated in the
solidification of the basalt in vertical grooves.
We walked to the Ribeira Grande waterfall, a waterfall
that plunges hundreds of meters with around twenty
waterfalls, some plunging into the sea, others forming a
lagoon where one can swim.
On our way back, we had for dinner fresh fish and we
drank the best regional wine at the pleasant restaurant
owned by Dona Rosa, originally from São Miguel but
who has chosen to live more to the east.
Considered as one of the most beautiful
islands in the Region, Flores stands out for
its cascades and lagoons, small paradises
hidden in the laurel forest.

Whoever visits Puerto de Mogán, a small
city in the south of Gran Canaria, cannot
remain indifferent: the environment and the
balance between nature and what man has
built involves us. The sun and the colorful
hues of the flowers, which embellish the
small streets, transmit a feeling of
tranquility and detachment. To walk is a
necessity, to peer in each corner, to pay
attention to every detail, to enjoy the water

Throughout the whole year, Puerto Mogán

Hotel Flores opened in 2009 and is part of the
green tranquility involving the island in Europe
which is most situated to the west.

ó depois de ter feito uma viagem
à volta do mundo é que percebeu que o fado seria uma opção
de carreira, porquê?
Ainda não estava preparada para
cantar. Uma viagem dessas é uma
construção interior, passa por criar
um pouco de humanidade, por ter consciência do outro.
Cantar é dar alguma coisa. É oferecer. Necessitei de ganhar mais abrangência para chegar ao íntimo das pessoas. Percebi a minha vocação. Foi uma descoberta.
Prefere atuar numa casa de fados ou num grande palco?
Tenho prazeres muito grandes em todos os palcos. O fado
vive muito da troca de energia. É normal que numa
casa de fados essa experiência aconteça de forma especialmente intensa. Mas também se consegue num grande palco, com a soma da energia vinda de tanta gente.

Was it only after you traveled around the world
that you realized fado would be an option for you
as a career?
I was not yet prepared to sing. A trip of this sort is like
building up your interior, creating a bit of humanity
because one becomes aware of others. To sing is to give
something. It’s to offer. I had to gain more experience to
reach people’s intimacy. I understood my vocation. It was
a discovery.
Do you prefer to sing in a fado house or on a big
stage?
I enjoy all stages. Fado has a lot to do with exchanging
of energy. It’s normal that in a fado house, the experience is especially intense. But it can also be achieved on a

Há uma geração de novos fadistas que está a contribuir para mudar o fado. Que lhe parece que levou a
esta reaproximação?
A música não mudou. O fado é o mesmo. O que mudou
foi a forma como as pessoas passaram a encarar o fado.
E também o mundo, em toda a sua conjuntura social e
económica. Neste momento, sentimos que devemos
partir em busca das raízes, do que é mais genuíno e
puro. Cada vez mais preferimos consumir o que é nosso.
A melancolia do fado faz parte da cultura portuguesa?
Faz parte da nossa genética. As pessoas gostam de fado
porque lhes toca ou porque as magoa muito. O fado tem
sempre uma carga brutal, uma carga de violência. Essa
é uma beleza na qual se encontra uma identificação
connosco. Somos, de alguma forma, nostálgicos, temos

There is a new generation of fado singers who is
contributing to a change in fado. What do you think
has contributed to this new interest in fado?
The music hasn’t changed. Fado remains the same. What
has changed is the way people have come to view fado.
The world has also changed socially and economically.
Right now, we feel that we have to go and look for our
roots, for what is more genuine and pure. More and more
we prefer what is ours.
Is fado’s melancholy part of the Portuguese culture?
It’s genetic. People like fado because they are moved by
it or because it hurts them a lot. Fado always has an extraordinary, violent impact. This is one of its beauties in
which we can find identification with ourselves. We are,
in a way, nostalgic; we are prone to pessimism. Despite
fado never stopped being joyful and colorful. It has to do
with a harder moment in our life, but it also has to do
with the popular feasts, with effusive, joyful feelings. It’s
only now that people are discovering it.

What can you tell us about yourself apart from
fado?
I love to travel. It nurtures me and it is my liberty. I love
art, museums, beauty, and reading. These activities help
me in my profession, which is singing, transmitting my emotions through music. Everything I do is related with fado.

Fado already had universal visibility. Foreigners have
long welcomed fado. It’s a different emotion because
people, who are not familiar with our culture, do not
speak our language and, suddenly, find an incredible
dimension in fado. UNESCO’s award has nothing but
confirmed that universality.

Mas é sempre possível
descobrir mais uma.
Basta olhar com atenção.
Pousam onde menos se
espera. Têm tamanhos, pesos e cores variadas. Não gostam de barulho, nem de se sentir ameaçadas pela presença
humana. Muitas destas aves descobriram as nove ilhas
açorianas muito antes de serem habitadas. Aqui repousam anualmente, entre setembro e março, das longas
migrações, muitas vezes acidentais, entre continentes.
Há que andar pé ante pé, e, depois, aguardar pacientemente que a natureza se revele em esplendor. Observar
aves exige tempo e persistência. Na maioria das vezes,
o esforço é recompensado.
Na ilha de S. Miguel, a Lagoa das Sete Cidades é um dos
melhores locais para observar aves. Percorrendo as margens da lagoa avistam-se várias espécies de limícolas,
garças e aves aquáticas. Já nas áreas arborizadas costumam estar os passeriformes oriundos da América do

Azores, located between Europe and America,
are one of the best places in the world for
watching rare birds. Are you prepared to be
surprised? Over 400 different types of birds have been
sighted in the Azores, but it is always possible to discover one more. All you need is to pay attention.
The perch where you least expect them to. They have different sizes, weights and varied colors. They don’t like
noise, nor to feel threatened by the presence of man. Many
of these birds discovered these none Azorean islands a long
before they were inhabited. They come here every year, between September and March, from their long migrations,
sometimes accidental between continents.
One must tiptoe and then wait patiently for nature to reveal itself in all its splendor. Bird watching requires time

On the island of São Miguel, the Lagoa das Sete Cidades is
one of the best places for bird watching. Walking along the
lagoon’s banks we can see several species of waders, herons
and aquatic birds. In the wooded areas one can find the

Além das espécies nativas, os Açores destacam-se
no panorama da avifauna mundial por acolherem
várias espécies migradoras.
Norte, assim como subespécies regionais. Junto à
ponte que separa a lagoa há um canavial onde nidifica a galinha-d’água e que serve de refúgio a outras
espécies de ralídeos e patos. Se preferir observar aves
marinhas, como o cagarro e o frulho, a costa dos
Mosteiros é o local ideal.
Mas é na outra ponta da ilha, mais precisamente na
serra da Tronqueira, que está guardada uma das jóias
da coroa: o Priôlo. Trata-se do único passeriforme
endémico dos Açores e já esteve ameaçado de extinção.
Desde 2004, a atividade da observação regular de aves
na Região está em crescimento. Quem chega procura, essencialmente, as subespécies dos Açores. Está
disposto a percorrer várias ilhas, pois cada uma acolhe diferentes espécies. Em Santa Maria podem ver-se
raridades europeias, como falcões. O Paul da Praia da
Vitória e a Pedreira do Cabo da Praia, na ilha Terceira,
são dos melhores locais na Europa para observar patos,
garças e aves marinhas. Nos ilhéus da Graciosa nidifica o painho-das-tempestades-de-monteiro, única ave
marinha endémica dos Açores. As Flores e o Corvo
acolhem inúmeras espécies americanas.

subspecies. Near the bridge which separates the lagoon there
is a reed bed where the common moorhen and which is also
the refuge for other species of rallidae and ducks. If you prefer to watch sea birds, as the shearwater and the Barolo shearwater, the Mosteiros coast is the ideal place.
But it’s on the other side of the island, more precisely at
Serra da Tronqueira, that you can find the jewel of the
crown: the Azores bullfinch. It’s the only endemic passeriform of the Azores and it was once an endangered species.
Since 2004 the regular bird watching activity has increased in the region. Whoever arrives essentially looks for the
Azorean subspecies and is willing to visit several islands
as each of them has different species. On Santa Maria, one
can see European rarities like Falcons. Paul da Praia da
Vitória and Pedreira do Cabo da Praia, on Terceira Island,
are one of the best spots in Europe to watch ducks, herons
and sea birds. On the Graciosa islets, the Monteiro's Storm
Petrel builds its nest; it’s the only seabird endemic to the
Azores. Flores and Corvo have numerous American species.

Foods seduziu-nos para um festim

Optámos por provar de tudo um pouco. Abrimos

In 1968, Roger Berkowitz introduced a food philosophy
both simple and brilliant: fish and seafood brought to the
table daily. In Boston, seafood in one of the harbor’s best
spots, the Legal Sea Foods was the place we chose for a
gastronomical feast. There, in front of our eyes, only separated by a showcase and on crushed ice were oysters, scallops, lobsters, tunas and salmons.
We chose to try a bit of everything. We started with
chowder, a soup of varied seafood, sprinkled with herbs.
Next, we had a refreshing dish of oysters. Crabs, lobsters and jumbo shrimps are a must. This freshness can
only be equaled by the tuna bruschettas. If you choose
a main course, we recommend the grilled salmon. Fresh,
tender, delicious with its strong sea aroma.
The restaurant’s ex-libris is the red lobster with its creamy flavor which will not leave you indifferent. Legal
Sea Foods combines Italian cuisine with distinct sea
flavors. One must not disregard the tuna bruschettas,
the salmon or the cream cheese pizzas.

desafio novo: pelo período de um mês, deu a conhecer em Boston o melhor da gastronomia açoriana.
Alguns dos chefs de topo daquela cadeia rumaram aos
Açores, em busca dos sabores que enriquecem a gastronomia local. Posteriormente, o restaurante teve a
oportunidade de servir mais de 400 mil refeições inspiradas na culinária tradicional açoriana: escabeche
de camarão, polvo à lagareiro, pastéis de bacalhau,
peixe frito, espadarte grelhado, arroz cremoso de
peixe e torresmos de porco com amêijoas.
Alguns pratos desta campanha vão permanecer nas
ementas do Legal Sea Foods, como é o caso do pastel de bacalhau.
We also got the chance to try the Portuguese Stew, which
harmoniously combines the Portuguese and American cuisine. For dessert we just could not resists the fig ice cream.
Not long ago, the legal Sea Foods Harborside (a chain
which now owns 32 restaurants, most of them on the
east coast) took up a new challenge: for a month, it
introduced Boston to the best of Azorean cuisine. Some
of this chain’s master chefs set off to the Azores looking for new flavors to enrich the local cuisine. Later on,
the restaurant had the chance to serve more than 400
thousand meals of the traditional Azorean cuisine:
shrimp escabeche, braised octopus, salt cod fritters, fried
fish, grilled swordfish, creamy seafood rice and braised
pork with clams.
In the Boston harbor, Legal Sea Foods offers
particularly pleasant spaces. Offering a refined cuisine it is ideal for relaxing and enjoying an excellent meal.

foi o tema de todas as conversas e o lugar de todos
os sonhos em Ponta Delgada.

Maria nunca foi tão curta como
agora. Entre os dias 25 de Maio
e 1 de Junho uma numerosa,
alegre e representativa embaixada mariense desembarcou no
aeroporto João Paulo II e dirigiu-se para as Portas do Mar,
com a intenção de promover a sua ilha junto dos vizinhos micaelenses. A ambiciosa acção de charme cumpriu
os seus objectivos, atraindo numeroso público e dando
visibilidade a tudo aquilo que torna Santa Maria um destino diferente, atraente e acessível. Foram organizadas
diversas acções promocionais e exposições que ilustraram o “espírito” da ilha e divulgaram o que de melhor
ela tem para oferecer aos visitantes. No decorrer da
semana os marienses cativaram também os micaelenses com uma mostra do seu artesanato e da sua culinária (o ponto alto foram as sopas do Império, servidas na
segunda-feira do Espírito Santo a mais de mil e trezentas pessoas).

MARIENSE WEEK LIVENS PORTAS
DO MAR The land where the Azores started was the subject of all conversations and the
place for every dream in Ponta Delgada. The
distance between São Miguel and Santa Maria has never
been as short. Between the 25th May and 1st Junea
numerous, joyful Mariense representation has disembarked at João Paulo II airport and headed to Portas do
Mar with the intention of promoting their island among
their neighbors from São Miguel.. The ambitious charm
action has attained its objectives by attracting a large
public and giving visibility to all which makes Santa
Maria a different, attractive and accessible destination.
Several promotional activities took place as well as
exhibitions to illustrate the “spirit” of the island and
divulge the best if what of has to offer its visitors.
Throughout the week , the inhabitants of Santa Maria
also captivated the people of São Miguel by showing
their crafts and cuisine ( the highlight were the Império
soups, served on the Monday of the Holy Spirit to more
than a thousand and three hundred people)..

The Azores bullfinch can only be found on
the highest mountains of the island of São
Miguel, Azores. It is a species, which has,
throughout the centuries, resisted the changes Man, has made to nature and which
nearly led to its extinction. Two of Azores’

No presente, o Priôlo continua a sobreviver

O céu é o limite para o povo açoriano

urante décadas, o povo açoriano partiu em direção a
outras partes do mundo, formando grandes comunidades
açorianas em países como o Brasil, Uruguai, EUA, Canadá e
Bermuda. Eram homens e mulheres que viviam
essencialmente da agricultura, da pecuária e do mar, cujos
proventos constituíam o sustento familiar e a base alimentar
de famílias inteiras. Apesar de hoje em dia as nossas
comunidades desempenharem um papel fulcral em todas as

como o “rei da batata-doce”, nasceu na ilha do
Pico. Emigrou para o Brasil e, posteriormente,
para os EUA, onde lidera o grupo económico
considerado o maior produtor e distribuidor de
batata-doce biológica do mundo. Reconhecido a
nível do governo federal dos EUA, é igualmente
um líder comunitário e um dos maiores
filantropos da diáspora açoriana. Recentemente, foi agraciado pela
Assembleia Legislativa da Região Autónoma dos Açores que lhe
atribuiu a insígnia autonómica de mérito industrial, comercial e
agrícola.
Manuel Eduardo Vieira, known as the "king of sweet potato",
was born in the island of Pico. Manuel Vieira first emigrated to Brazil and
later to the U.S. where he leads an economic group considered the largest
producer and distributor of organic sweet potatoes in the world. Recognized
in the U.S. at the federal government level, he is also a community leader
and one of the major philanthropists of the Azorean Diaspora. Recently,
Manuel Vieira was honored by the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous
Region of the Azores, which awarded him the autonomic insignia of
industrial, commercial and agricultural merit.
Emeril Lagasse nasceu em Fall River,
Massachusetts, EUA, descendente de mãe
natural da ilha de S. Miguel. Atualmente é
considerado como um dos chefes de cozinha
mais afamados nos EUA. Para além da sua rede
de restaurantes, é proprietário de um canal de
televisão dedicado à gastronomia e culinária,
onde apresenta uma vasta programação.
A revista “Time” classificou o programa “Essence of Emeril” como
um dos 10 melhores shows de televisão. Lagasse lançou a sua
própria linha de panelas, “Emerilware”, e foi autor do best seller
“New Orleans Cooking. Em 2002, criou o “Emeril Lagasse
Foundation” que visa a para promoção de programas educacionais
de nutrição e arte culinária para crianças.

For decades, the Azorean people left for other parts of the world,
forming large communities in countries like Brazil, Uruguay, USA,

mainly from agriculture, livestock and the sea, whose earnings went

Although today our communities play a central role in all areas of
knowledge and in all professional domains in the host countries, the

Carlos Alberto Nóia Rafael was born in the island of Corvo and
emigrated in 1968 to the U.S. with his family, settling in the city of New
Bedford. He is currently the largest fishing operator in North America, with
the fleet "Carlos Sea Food Inc." which already exceeds forty trolling, seafood
and trawl net fishing vessels. Recently, the Legislative Assembly of the
Autonomous Region of Azores awarded Carlos Rafael the autonomic
insignia of industrial, commercial and agricultural merit.
Luis Bettencourt é natural da ilha de
São Jorge e emigrou em 1969 para Turlock,
Califórnia, EUA com a família. Junto com o pai
trabalhou nos lacticínios e em 1982 mudou-se
para o estado de Idaho, onde abriu a sua própria
leitaria, a “Dairies Bettencourt”. Em 30 anos,
passou de 17 para 60.000 vacas em latação,
espalhadas por 13 propriedades no estado de
Idaho, tornando-se o maior produtor de leite
individual do mundo.
Luis Bettencourt is from the island of S. Jorge and emigrated
with his family to Turlock, California, USA in 1969. He worked along his
father in the dairy industry and in 1982 moved to the state of Idaho, where
he opened his own dairy farm, the "Bettencourt Dairies". In 30 years, his
business went from 17 to 60,000 lactating cows, which are spread over 13
properties in the Idaho state. Luis Bettencourt is the single largest milk
producer in the world.

pelos portugueses – o bacalhau. David Leite is a Luso-American whose grandparents were from
the island of S. Miguel. He is considered the greatest American expert in
Portuguese gastronomy and writes for the “New York Times” and
“Washington Post”. David Leite released a book in the U.S. on the
Portuguese cuisine, "The New Portuguese Table", in which he suggests an
Azorean or Azorean-descendant communities to an unparalleled level
of excellence. There are thousands of immigrants and their
descendants who became notorious around the world in professional
sectors such as fishing, agriculture, livestock, canning industries,
dairy farming, restaurants, gastronomy and nutrition - among

que integra 225 lojas, espalhadas por sete
estados, o que o torna o maior proprietário
privado de Dunkin Donuts nos EUA e no

Fernando Manuel Cafua was born in the island of S. Miguel in
1950 and emigrated to the U.S. in 1968. Fernando Cafua bought his first
Dunkin Donuts franchise in 1980 and today he is the owner of "Cafua
Management Company", which includes 225 stores, spread across seven
states. Fernando Cafua is the largest private owner of Dunkin Donuts in the
U.S. and worldwide. Since 2004, his son, Mark Cafua, took over as
company president.
Manoel Henrique Farias Ramos
nasceu na ilha Terceira e emigrou para o Brasil
em 1957. Foi Presidente da Casa dos Açores em
São Paulo, tendo apoiado a Festa do Espírito
Santo e reabilitado a Folia. Atualmente é
aposentado como Juiz do Trabalho. É
Presidente do Sindicato do Comércio Varejista
de Carnes Frescas de Paulo (o estado mais rico
do Brasil e o maior centro financeiro de toda a
América do Sul) e Presidente da
UNICARNES; Vice-Presidente da Federação do Comércio do
Estado de São Paulo e possui uma empresa na área da pecuária.
Manoel Henrique Farias Ramos was born in the island of
Terceira and emigrated to Brazil in 1957. He was the President of the House
of the Azores in São Paulo and supported the Holy Ghost Feast and
promoted the Folia. He is currently retired as a Labour Judge. Manoel
Ramos is also the President of the Meat Trade Union of São Paulo (the
richest state of Brazil and the largest financial center in South America) and
President of UNICARNES; Vice-President of the National Council of
Livestock and has a livestock company.

Permanent accompaniment
A special accompaniment service is
available for children between 3
months and 4 years who travel
alone. This service should be
requested when the booking is made
and is subject to a fee. Children

The exercises, which are recommended, are
simple and practical, but they might help you

you relax your body and mind, making your
trip even more enjoyable, comfortable and

nos Açores data dos inícios do
século XIX, mas foi só a partir da
década de 1870 que por iniciativa da Sociedade Promotora da
Agricultura Micaelense começaram na ilha de São Miguel os
esforços conducentes à cultura e ao fabrico do chá. Esta
associação, fundada em 1843 por um grupo de gentleman farmers locais, soube antever o final do ciclo
económico da laranja – cuja exportação para a GrãBretanha trouxe grandes rendimentos na primeira
metade do século XIX – e procurar culturas alternativas que pudessem relançar um novo ciclo de prosperidade agrícola na ilha de S. Miguel. A camellia
sinensis, apesar da excelente adaptação ao solo e clima
açorianos, era até então uma planta decorativa sem
qualquer vantagem económica, pois os agricultores
locais desconheciam as técnicas de apanha e secagem
que transformavam as suas folhas no tão apreciado
chá. Procurando ultrapassar esta lacuna, Ernesto do
Canto propôs à Sociedade Promotora da Agricultura,
em Novembro de 1873, “o contrato de um china que entre
nós montasse o serviço da manipulação do chá”.

HOW TEA BEGAN TO BE CULTIVATED ON THE ISLAND OF SÃO
MIGUEL A group of local gentlemen farmers anticipated the end of the orange cycle
and looked for alternative crops to launch a
new cycle of agricultural prosperity on the
island.
The climatization of the camellia sinensis in the Azores
dates back to the 19th century, but it was only as from
the early 1870s and by the initiative of the Sociedade
Promotora da Agricultura Micaelense, that the efforts to
introduce the growing and production of tea started on the
Island of São Miguel. This association, founded in 1843
by a group of local gentlemen farmers, anticipated the end
of the orange’s economical cycle – whose export to Great
Britain produced income in the early 19th century – and
to look for alternative crops which would relaunch a new
cycle of agricultural prosperity on the Island of São Miguel.
The camellia sinensis, despite the excellent adaptation to
the Azorean soil and climate was, until then, a decorative plant with no economical advantage, because local
farmers ignored the techniques of the picking and drying
of the leaves which transformed them in the much appreciated tea. Trying to overcome this gap, Ernesto do Canto

Aproveitando a circunstância de Augusto César
Supico – um Major de Engenharia com ligações à ilha
de S. Miguel – desempenhar então o cargo de Diretor
das Obras Públicas em Macau, Ernesto do Canto solicitou os seus bons ofícios para a contratação de dois
especialistas chineses. Após um complexo processo
burocrático, que envolveu escrituras notariais redigidas em chinês e português, Augusto Supico anunciava em carta datada de Macau, 13 de Novembro
1877, as boas novas aos seus amigos micaelenses:
“Estão contratados os dois chinas para irem aí ensaiar
a cultura e preparação do chá. Acabo de assinar, como
testemunha, o contrato feito entre eles e o Governador
[de Macau], em nome da Sociedade Promotora da
Agricultura. A duração do contrato é por um ano (...)
levam sementes do arbusto e modelos de todas as ferramentas e utensílios precisos para o trabalho (...) Um
deles, o ajudante do mestre, fala português e alguma
coisa de inglês (...) O mestre vai ganhando quarenta

November 1873, “hiring a Chinese who among us would
put up the handling of tea”.
Taking advantage of the fact that Augusto César Supico
– an Engineer Major with ties to the island of São Miguel
– was at the time the Director of Public Works in Macao,
Ernesto do Canto requested his good offices in the hiring
two Chinese specialists. After a complex bureaucratic
process, which involved notarial deeds written in Chinese
and Portuguese, Augusto Supico announced in a letter
dated Macao, November 13th 1877, the good news to his
friends from São Miguel: “ Two Chinamen have been
hired to go over and experiment the growing and production of tea. I have just signed, as a witness, the contract
established between them and the Governor [of Macao],
in the name of the Sociedade Promotora da Agricultura.
The duration of the contract is one year (…) they are
taking seeds of the bush and models of all the tools needed for the job (…). One of them the master’s assistant,
can speak Portuguese and some English (…) The master will be earning 40 dollars a month and the assistant

a população local. Durante a sua estadia em S. Miguel,
que se prolongou até Julho de 1879, Lau-a-pan (mestre) e Lau-a-teng (ajudante e intérprete) possibilitaram aos membros da Sociedade Promotora da
Agricultura o contacto com conhecimentos e competências técnicas que, uma vez assimilados e aperfeiçoados, estiveram depois na base da florescente
indústria do chá açoriano, cujo arranque se situa nos
finais da década de 1890, quando alguns dos proprietários da ilha começam a alargar as superfícies de
cultivo desta planta, ao mesmo tempo que investem
em sofisticados equipamentos de secagem para melhor rentabilizar as suas colheitas.
Transplantada do Oriente para o meio do Atlântico,
a cultura do chá na ilha de S. Miguel é hoje uma tradição que já conta com mais de cem anos, fruto da
iniciativa da Sociedade Promotora da Agricultura
Micaelense, a primeira instituição desse tipo a aparecer em Portugal no século XIX.

On the 5th of March 1878 the long-awaited Chinese arrived in Ponta Delgada aboard Luso. Their long braids and
Oriental costumes immediately aroused the curiosity
among the local inhabitants. During their stay on São
Miguel which lasted until July 1879, Lau-a-pan (the master) and Lau-a-teng (the assistant and interpreter) made
it possible for the members of the Sociedade Promotora
da Agricultura to experience the knowledge and technical competences which, once learned and improved, were
the basis for the blooming industry of Azorean tea, whose
start-up was in the late 1890s, when some landowners
on the island started to expand the land used to grow this
plant and, at the same time, started investing in sophisticated drying equipment to monetize their harvest.
Transplanted from the Orient to the mid-Atlantic, the
growing of tea on the Island of São Miguel is today a tradition of over a hundred years, by the initiative of the
Sociedade Promotora da Agricultura Micaelense, the first
institution of that kind to make its appearance in Portugal
in the 19th century.

clock, em cujo mostrador se podia ler tempus fugit... O
prédio de madeira, tábuas compridas ou shingles sobrepostos, tal qual os granéis da Ilha, como alguém apelidou as casas americanas: mais feias que os nossos granéis,
dois pisos (o rés-do-chão não entra na tabuada americana), possuía uma cellar para arrumos, lavandaria
(máquinas com rachinha para enfiar as moedas de quarto de dólar). Uma das inquilinas, para não ser apanhada descalça no dia da lida da laundry, pedia a parentes
e conhecidos que lhe destrocassem notas por moedas
e guardava-as numa velha latinha de candies. O senhorio, sequista em suas conversas esticadas até à légua,
esganado, vinha recolhê-las numa bolsa com atilho na
embocadura, igual à dos sacristães na pedinchice dominical; uma caldeira para o aquecimento central: na Nova
Inglaterra, o Inverno é tough, brabo, ventígeno, beirando o hurricane, polegadas de neve congelando orelhas,
narizes e outras saliências mais pudicas; o cubículo da
cave cuja fechadura havia sido mudada e trancada a

EMIGRANT, IMMIGRANT AND MIGRANT
In the sitting room in America, the promised land for thousands of emigrants of the Azores, the oratorio of the talavision and a ‘father’ clock with the words tempus fugit
written on the clock face… The wooden building of long
planks and with overlapping shingles exactly as the Island’s
barns, as someone called the American houses: uglier than
our barns, had two storeys (in America the ground floor
corresponds to the first floor), had a cellar for storage, a
laundry room (washing machines with a slot for the quarter dollar coins). One of the tenants, not to be caught off
guard, would ask relatives and friends to change dollar
bills for coins and would keep them in an old candy can.
The landowner, with long and tedious conversations, would
avidly come to collect those coins in a stringed bag, similar to those sextons use at the end of the Sunday mass when
begging for money; a boiler for the central heating: in New
England, winter is tough, windy, almost hurricane like,
inches of snow freezing our ears, noses and other more
intimate bulges; the cubicle in the basement whose lock had
been changed and which was now locked by the tenant, to
whom it belonged (the landlord had a picklock and he
liked to snoop, to whet the curiosity and to vehemently stress

Naco de terra cingido de água e de lindezas aprimoradas
nos cartazes turísticos e no robusto lirismo de poetas e cantores,
a Ilha foi nada e criada num terreiro de abalos,
emigrações e migrações.

tinha gazua e gostava de ir meter o nariz, para azeitar a
chocalhice e sublinhar a traço grosso, grosseiro, o seu
poder de proprietário: isto que está aqui é muito meu, o
suor do meu trabalho, suor que não fedia, por via do
desodorizante... No quintal, o dono desforrava-se: se o
tenant cultivava nabiças, couves-galegas, pepinos, batata doce, e outros mimos das Ilhas, aderidos ao precedente paladar, o landlord achava-se no direito de levar o
que bem quisesse. Alguns dos rendeiros até ficavam
honrados com o gesto, só o Pintassilgo cresceu para o
seu senhorio, sacho em punho, chamou-lhe ladrão, mas
acrescentou de consciência, não fosse a Justiça morder-lhe nas canelas. A paga chegou de supetão: olho
da rua, que a casa não é tua... Contrato de arrendamento para quê? E a liberdade do dono e senhor? O
Pintassilgo foi chilrear para outra gaiola...
O bloco de residências situava-se na Main Street, título de romance traduzido por Rua Principal... Teria
sido mais curial Rua Direita! Em Coimbra, cidade de
estudantes migrantes, a rua corre directa à igreja de

sweat due to the deodorant…In the backyard, the landlord
would take revenge: if the tenant had turnip greens, kale cabbage, cucumbers, sweet potatoes, and other specialties from
the Island now just a lingering memory of the flavors of the
past , the landlord thought it was his right to pick whatever
he felt like picking. Some of the tenants felt honoured by this
gesture, only Pintassilgo called him a thief, a thief in conscience lest he might have problems with the Justice. The landlord’s revenge came straight away: get out, the house is not
yours… A lease contract? What for? And the landlord and
owner’s freedom? Pintassilgo went chirping in another cage…
(Pintassilgo is goldfinch in English).
The block of apartments was on Main Street, which could
very well be the title of a novel…Straight Street would have
been more adequate! In Coimbra, a city of migrant students,
the street goes directly to Santa Cruz church; if there had been
a castle, the street would faint in its arms; there are long
romantic sighs in that area…

Naco de terra cingido de água e de lindezas aprimoradas nos cartazes turísticos e no robusto lirismo de
poetas e cantores, a Ilha foi nada e criada num terreiro de abalos, emigrações e migrações; a Rua Direita
espreguiça-se, pausada, da igreja até ao mar. Nessa já
inexistente Rua Direita, alinhavam-se as casas mais afidalgadas, apalaçadas, apalhaçadas, mui poucas já com
retretes portas a dentro, fedorentas, luxuosas nesse
tempo de geral miséria cercada de luxuriantes belezas
encantadas; o passal; uma mercearia fina, fundada
em 1875, o tendeiro, luva branca e guarda-pó de riscadinho, à porta o calhambeque de capota, Dodge, da
Guerra de Catorze; sobre o balcão, uma balança Avery,
branca, autografada pelo mosquedo (havia uma rival,
em outra venda, Recsi, vermelho-escuro metalizado,
concitando simpatizantes e adversários quer de uma
ou outra: os ilhéus pelam-se por tomar partido).
Numa das adegas, um quadro pintado por um sargento do Regimento de Beja representava uma vasta planura alentejana, o trigo maduro pedindo a sua ceifa,
o sol erguendo-se, esbraseado, no horizonte, e uma
ceifeira, foice em punho, chapéu de palha por cima
de um lenço vermelho, atado no queixo, cobria-lhe
parte do rosto e todo o pescoço. No cimo, uma faixa
dizia: Alentejo, Celeiro de Portugal... De lá chegaram
muitos migrantes. No início do povoamento e durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Depois de ilhados,
retornaram alguns, um século depois, à origem (Niza,
Castelo de Vide), onde ainda se fala um alentejano
com aroma a magma), os ficantes retroverteram-se em
imigrantes e, mais tarde, ajudaram-se, sozinhos, ao
baú e ao guarda-sol emigrante (Domingos Rebelo).
Chegaram em caravelas para povoar a Ilha, cheirando ainda a achamento novo. Prima irmã do mar que
rodeia a ínsula de ondas inchadas (as inchas), a planura alentejana transcreveu a ondulação do oceano
para as searas e tornou-se Ilha gémea, mar e ondas
de terra e enormes searas de vento...

Rua Direita stretches slowly from the church to the sea. In that
no longer existent Rua Direita, there were the nobler, palacelike, clownish-like houses, very few with indoor WCs, smelly,
luxurious back then when there was a lot of poverty surrounded by luxurious and enchanting beauties; the priest’s courtyard; a delicatessen, founded on 1875, the employee, in white
gloves and striped work coat, the convertible Dodge dating
back to the First World War at the door; on the counter, an
Avery scale, covered with fly excrements (there was a rival
scale in another store, a Recsi, a metalized dark red, there were
admirers and contenders of both: islanders love to take sides).
In one of the cellars, a painting painted by a sergeant of the
Beja Regiment represented a vast plain in the Alentejo, the ripe
wheat waiting to be reaped, the blazing sun in the horizon, a
woman reaper, holding a sickle, a straw hat over a red scarf,
tied under her chin covered part of her face and all of her neck.
At the top of the painting were the words: Alentejo, Portugal’s
Barn… A lot of migrants came from there, in the beginning of
the settlements and during the Second World War. After living
on the islands, some returned, a century later to their original
towns. (Niza, Castelo de Vide), where a Portuguese of Alentejo
still has some touches of Azorean. Those who had stayed
behind became immigrants and, later, helped themselves on their
own to the chest and emigrant parasol (Domingos Rebelo).
They arrived in caravels to populate the Island which had very
recently been discovered. With strong ties to the sea surrounding the isles of swollen waves (the inchas), the Alentejo plain
transcribed the sea waves into the fields and became a twin
Island – sea and waves of land and vast fields of wind…
