NOTA INTRODUTÓRIA
O Serviço Regional de Estatística dos Açores edita mais uma publicação do Anuário Estatístico da Região
Autónoma dos Açores, disponibilizando, duma forma concentrada, um conjunto vasto de informação sobre
os Açores.
Os Anuários Estatísticos Regionais, cuja divulgação se iniciou na primeira metade da década de 90,
constituem a publicação de referência para a disponibilização de informação estatística à escala regional e
municipal. Ao longo dos anos, esta publicação tem vindo a ser objecto de constantes melhorias, quer de
conteúdo, aumentando a abrangência da informação disponibilizada, quer de forma, garantindo uma melhor
integração e coerência da informação.
A edição deste ano segue a organização da estrutura temática adoptada na edição anterior, consistindo em
26 subcapítulos agrupados em quatro grandes domínios: O Território, As Pessoas, A Actividade Económica
e O Estado.
Nesta edição, manteve-se, no início de cada subcapítulo, um quadro com um conjunto de indicadores de
síntese, visando uma percepção mais imediata dos principais padrões territoriais associados às diversas
temáticas. Por outro lado, mantém-se a apresentação dos quadros de informação em formato bilingue
(Português e Inglês).
Nesta publicação, adoptou-se a Nomenclatura de Unidades Territoriais para fins Estatísticos (NUTS)
estabelecida pelo decreto-lei nº 244/2002 e pelo regulamento comunitário nº 1059/2003, excepto no
subcapítulo Preços, dada a impossibilidade de reajustar os indicadores à nova geografia territorial
preservando o seu grau de representatividade regional.
Em consequência da informação disponibilizada nos Anuários Estatísticos Regionais ser proveniente de um
abrangente leque de operações estatísticas, o período em análise não é homogéneo ao longo de toda a
publicação. Contudo, os anos de 2004 e 2005 constituem o seu núcleo central em matéria de âmbito
temporal.
No Retrato Territorial de Portugal, a disponibilizar paralelamente e cuja edição atinge o quarto ano
consecutivo, é analisada a informação estatística de base divulgada nos Anuários Estatísticos Regionais.
Esta análise consiste numa caracterização demográfica, social e económica do território português, à escala
local e regional. A publicação é acompanhada por um CD-ROM com a informação estatística dos Anuários
Estatísticos Regionais e com os textos de análise do Retrato Territorial de Portugal.
Por último, o SREA / INE agradecem a colaboração preciosa de diversas entidades no fornecimento da
informação estatística apresentada, nomeadamente instituições da administração central e local, empresas
ou indivíduos.

INTRODUCTORY NOTE
The Regional Service of Statistics of the Azores publishes another Statistical Yearbook of the Azores
Region, offering, in a concentrated way, a vast group of information about the Azores.
The Regional Statistical Yearbooks, which began circulating in the early nineties, can now be considered the
statistical publication of reference on a regional and municipal level. This publication has been subject to
continuous improvement in terms of both content, where the scope of information included was extended,
and of form, to improve the coherence and integration of this information.
The thematic content of this years’ edition follows the last edition’s, being organised with 26 sub chapters
grouped into four main chapters - The Territory, The People, The Economic Activity and The State.
As in the last edition, each sub chapter opens with a key indicators table, which enables the reader at a
glance to see the main territorial trends relating to the different topics. On the other hand, data tables
continue to appear in a bilingual format (Portuguese and English).
The Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS), as set out in Law decree 244/2002 and by the
EU regulation 1059/2003 has been used in this publication except in the Prices sub chapter as the indicators
could not be adjusted to the new geographical areas and continue to be representative of the different
regions.
As the information available in the Regional Statistical Yearbooks comes from a large variety of statistical
data sources, the time period under analysis is not the same over the entire publication. However, the years
2004 and 2005 are the core in what regards the time scope.
At the same time and for the fourth year running the Territorial Portrait of Portugal will be published. This
publication uses the information published in the Regional Statistical Yearbooks to paint a demographic,
social and economic picture of Portugal, with a focus on the local and regional levels. A CD-Rom is
available, together with this publication, contained both the Regional Statistical Yearbooks’ statistical data
and the analyses developed in the Territorial Portrait of Portugal.
