Methods: The subject comprised one capuchin monkey, male, 9 years. The animal was injected with 0.3 mg/kg (IM) of MPTP (10 injections) over 30 days, with 3 days of interval between injections. Over these 30 days, the symptoms and behaviors observed were: stereotyped movements, tongue ptosis, stiff tail, sudden drop and worst performance in behavioral test, after MPTP injection. Following the protocol period, the subject was sedated in the home cage with intramuscular injections of ketamine (2.5 mg/kg) and xylazine (0.125 mg/kg). After the induction of deep anesthesia, the animal was perfused and, the skull and dura mater were removed. The right brain hemisphere was cut on a cryostat at 20µm thick. Slices were stained with Haematoxin.eosin., reticulin, Nissl. All procedures were in accordance with an approved Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee protocol of the Brazilian Institute of the Environment. Results and conclusion: Most of the neurons of the substantia nigra exhibited a central chromatolysis and a process of degeneration of axons. It was also observed small aggregates of glial cells which indicates reactive gliosis in this mid brain region. In summary our histopathological analysis indicates a degeneration of the dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra, similar from that observed in human PD pacients.
