The arrow hit the centipede right in the middle of
its head, but instead of penetrating, it glanced off
harmless and fell to the ground. Nothing daunted,
Hidesato took another arrow, fitted it to the notch
of the bow and let fly. Again the arrow hit the
mark, it struck the centipede right in the middle of
its head, only to glance off and fall to the ground.
The centipede was invulnerable to weapons! When
the Dragon King saw that even this brave warrior’s
arrows were powerless to kill the centipede, he lost
heart and began to tremble with fear. The warrior
saw that he had now only one arrow left in his
quiver, and if this one failed he could not kill the
centipede. He looked across the waters. The huge
reptile had wound its horrid body several times
round the mountain and would soon come down
to the lake. Nearer and nearer gleamed fireballs of
eyes, and the light of its hundred feet began to
throw reflections in the still waters of the lake.
Then suddenly the warrior remembered that he
had heard that human saliva was deadly to
centipedes. But this was no ordinary centipede.
This was so monstrous that even to think of such a
creature made one creep with horror. Hidesato
determined to try his last chance. So taking his
last arrow and first putting the end of it in his
mouth, he fitted the notch to his bow, took careful
aim once more and let fly. This time the arrow
again hit the centipede right in the middle of its
head, but instead of glancing off harmlessly as
before, it struck home to the creature’s brain.

cabeça, porém em vez de penetrar, ela ricocheteou
sem causar danos e caiu no chão. Nada
amedrontado, Hidesato pegou outra flecha,
encaixou no entalhe do arco e atirou. Novamente a
flecha acertou a marca, ela acertou a centopeia
bem no meio de sua cabeça, somente para
ricochetear e cair no chão. A centopeia era
invulnerável a armas! Quando o Rei Dragão viu
que mesmo as flechas deste bravo guerreiro eram
inofensivas para matar a centopeia, ele perdeu as
esperanças e começou a tremer de medo. O
guerreiro viu que ele tinha agora somente uma
flecha restante em sua aljava, e se esta flecha
falhasse ele não poderia matar a centopeia. Ele
olhou através das águas. O enorme réptil tinha
enrolado seu horrendo corpo sete vezes ao redor
da montanha e logo desceria para o lago. Cada vez
mais perto brilhavam bolas de fogo dos olhos, e a
luz de seus cem pés começou a arremessar reflexos
nas águas calmas do lago. Então de repente o
guerreiro lembrou que ele tinha ouvido falar que a
saliva humana era mortal para centopeias. Porém
esta não era uma centopeia ordinária. Esta era tão
monstruosa que mesmo pensar sobre tal criatura
fazia uma pessoa ter calafrios de horror. Hidesato
determinou tentar sua última chance. Então
pegando sua última flecha e primeiro colocando a
ponta dela em sua boca, ele encaixou o entalhe em
seu arco, mirou cuidadosamente mais uma vez e
atirou. Desta vez a flecha novamente acertou a
centopeia bem no meio de sua cabeça, porém em
vez de ricochetear sem causar danos como antes,
ele acertou o cérebro da criatura.

nothing daunted: “daunted” é o passado do verbo “daunt”, que significa “amedrontar, atemorizar,
intimidar”. A expressão “nothing daunted” significa “nada amedrontado, nem um pouco intimidado”,
etc.

struck: passado de “strike” que significa “acertar”. Observe que “hit” também significa acertar. Não há
muita necessidade de se perguntar “quando eu uso hit e quando uso strike”. Simplesmente aprenda
exemplos de uso das duas palavras, que eventualmente você saberá quando usar uma e quando usar a
outra.

as esperanças”.

creep with horror: para entender essa expressão é necessário entender o sentido da palavra “creep”.
Em geral “creep” tem o sentido de “rastejar”, porém em determinados contextos ela significa “arrepios,
calafrios”. Assim, quando você “creep with horror”, você tem “calafrios, arrepios com/de horror”.
Observe os exemplos de uso de “creep”:
I hate snakes. They give me the creeps.
Eu odeio cobras. Elas me dão calafrios.
That guy gives me the creeps.
Aquele cara me dá calafrios/arrepios.
