BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
The school encompasses Junior High students – 6th through 9th grades – from 4
underprivileged communities: Morro do Adeus, Morro da Baiana, Morro da Alvorada and
Morro do Alemao, that are part of the slum area known as Complexo do Alemao.
The lab room lacks equipment; therefore, in spite of their good-will, the teachers, highly
capacitated, cannot develop any kind of work whatsoever.
The students live within a destitute community, lacking qualified attractions, a situation that
may lead them to hazardous paths.
By awakening their interest in Science, mainly Chemistry, the project can help the kids in
their formation, keeping them out of the streets and offering, instead, the opportunity to
pursue concrete objectives, thus building up a dignified and conscientious citizenship.
Actually, the community has been engaged, for long, in a persistent effort to make this
dream come true, so they will most certainly be deeply grateful to Rotary once they finally
achieve their goal.
The project fits in the criteria of the Future Vision Plan since it will have a long-term
continuity.
Bearing in mind the importance of the Image of Rotary, there will be a banner at the school
doorway identifying the lab as a Rotary project.
By the end of the course, Rotary will also provide certificates for all.
