VAR – Composers (with Romantic and Post-Romantic trends) who work in Pop Music area (with Nationalistic aspects).
INT – Intermediates Composers born between 1860 and 1885 and they followed free characteristics from Romanticism, Post-Romanticism, little
Nationalist and until some Modernism Techniques.
N 20 – 20th Nationalists with Romanticism, Post-Romanticism, Neo-Classicism and until Modernism Techniques.
MOD – Modernism with influences from: Debussy, Stravinsky, Milhaud, Bartók, Post-Romanticsm, Neo-Classicism, Pop/Folk Music etc.; they
worked with Classicism/Romantic genres (Symphonies, Tone Poems, Sonata etc.), but not influenced to the Nationalism.
PRE – Present Day Composers with Contemporary Techniques: Twelve Tone System, Serialism, Microtonalism, Change Music, Electroacoustic,
Experimentalism, Post-Modernism and others trends; important groups: Grupo Música Viva (founded in 1939 by Koellreutter and others),
Grupo Música Nova (Willy Correa, Gilberto Mendes, Damiano Cozzela and others founded in 1963) and Universidade da Bahia

Obs.: As the composers transit from an aesthetic to another one, I classified them in which their music predominated.
Concert Music: all genres of the Classical Music (sonata, chamber music, symphony, tone poem, ouverture etc.) and in the 20th Century
(Electroacoustic), utilitarian music: instrumental marches and civic hymns etc. and arranges/orchestration for Pop Music (Julio Medaglia, Rogério
Duprat etc.)
Operas: Óperas, Operetas, Musicals etc. and music for Ballett and Theatre and soundtrack for Radio, TV and Movies
Education: method for performer and basic-civil schools; books and scholar thesis about music.
Dance and Vocal Music: Choral Music (cantatas, civic hymns etc.), song-chamber music, pop music and dances
This list, obviously, is incomplete. Others composers need to be listed. Also the foreign teachers of composition (Portuguese, Spanish, French,
Italian, German etc.) must be searched that they had developed its activities in Brazil.
This table was made by Edson Tadeu Ortolan ( [email protected] ).
