Anuario de Filosofia del Derecho , 2007, XXIV, pp. 307‐332 Monográfico: Ponencias de las XXI Jornadas de la sociedad española de filosofía jurídica y política: Problemas actuales de la filosofía del derecho. The intersections between the legal and the literary lie in the diverse itinerary and different trajectory of the route of each element in the Law/Literature relation. They are articulated by means of certain grammatical classes of sintagmas, concretely organised by means of three prepositions (in, indicating place; of, denoting property; with, expressing the circumstance whereupon something is executed or happened) and a modal adverb (as, that is by way of, according to, in as much that, or so that), pointing from the adjacent thing to the symmetry. From these, the author distinguishes three types of intersections, respectively instrumental (in/of), structural (as) and institutional (with). 1. The Aesthetics of Redemption : Released Prisoners in American Film and Literature [Article]. Theoretical Criminology , 2009, 13, 1, pp. 129‐146 Special Issue: Explorations in Theories of Desistance: Societal‐Level Approaches to Reform. The released prisoner was a stock figure in American popular culture throughout the 20th century, and there is an enduring aesthetic associated with such narratives. Despite the artifice of the aesthetic, the best of them attempt to say serious things about the perils and pleasures of "straight time". This paper explores the way in which a cluster of books and films, dating from the 1990s, has addressed the experiences of released prisoners and notes an emergent focus on the personal agony of redemption. This has a contingent rather than an integral relation to the concern with rehabilitation and control espoused by criminal justice officials, but none the less enables the communication of culturally enriching stories to audiences who might not otherwise be interested in the problems of released prisoners. Academic criminology should take heed of these stories, and make more use of them, pedagogically and politically. 1. Prisoners. 2. Law and Films. 3. Law and Literature. 4. Popular Culture. 5. International Journal of Law in Context , 2009, 5, 3, pp. 263‐280 This paper argues that law and society are disconnected in practice, and that this is attributable, in part, to law's disconnection from the arts and humanities in our schemes of formal education. When we draw out the legal yarn from its cultural fabric, we find that it is remarkably thin. It is especially inadequate to describe the complexity of human interconnection, and even lacks a language to express such commonplace connections as unmarried romantic cohabitation and non‐profit clubs. To understand human interconnection and the law's connection to society, we must read the law "in context" ‐ as being one fabric, one textile, which other literatures ‐ and we must read with an appropriate ethic. To that end, this paper reads the law in the context of Dickens's Bleak House, which has been called "a novel of connections", and Forster's Howards End, which exhorts us to "connect the prose and the passion" 1.
