Tips for Foreign Visiting Professors

The purpose of this information sheet is to provide foreign visiting professors
(Professor Visitante Estrangeiro) with tips to enable them to navigate through the
Brazilian bureaucracy of the Universidade Estadual da Paraíba. Some tips are also
appropriate for the Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, the Universidade Federal
da Paraiba and other Brazilian universities. These tips are the result of experience, some
of if hard earned. The addresses listed in this document are subject to change but
nonetheless will point you in the proper direction. It is important to note that these tips
are only a guide, situations and requirements often vary from individual to individual.
This guide would not have been possible without the help of several individuals.
We would like to thank Dr. Sebastian Sanchez, Dr. Aline Lobato, Professoras Laercia M
de Medeiros and Joanna D’Arc from the Universidade Estadual da Paraíba. A special

1) Prior to leaving your home country:
a. Have some knowledge of Portuguese or Spanish. Only a handful of people will
be able to speak English at the state university, with a bit more at the federal university.
A phrase book is useful but it is not enough when filling out forms, official documents,
and interacting with government and university officials. Having knowledge of Spanish is

very useful and will help you learn Portuguese quickly. If having a working knowledge
of Portuguese (or Spanish) is not possible, you will have problems. Translators are
difficult to find and if they happen to be professors your access will be limited because of
their large teaching and/or administrative loads. There are a number of English language
schools in Campina Grande where translators can be found. Best among these schools is
Oxford American English, CCAA, and Wizard. The latter two schools are located in the
downtown area with CCAA located closest to the city center.
b. Keep in regular contact with your Brazilian colleagues. Do not assume that a
previously approved project will be ready to begin upon your arrival. Keep in constant
contact by e-mail and phone and if a problem arises, you might have time to solve it
before your visit. Funding from the Brazilian granting agencies CAPES or CNPq is
usually problem free. Funding from your home country should also be problem free. If
possible, obtain your funding through a granting agency. The less interaction you have
with the Brazilian bureaucracy the better.
c. Learn to drive a standard. Most cars are not automatic. Renting a car is
expensive, more so if it is an automatic. If you have the opportunity to borrow a
colleague’s car, most likely it will be a standard and be sure that the car contains all the
necessary documents of ownership. There are police roadblocks to and from such major
cities as Campina Grande and João Pessoa, and you have a high probability of being
asked to present the documents. Public transportation in Campina Grande is good and
reasonable priced. Several bus routes go directly to the state and federal university from
the city center and the price is reasonable. If your travels take you to other northeastern
cities such as Recife, João Pessoa, and Bananeiras, buses are regularly available and are

an efficient way of traveling. Many of the buses are modern and quite comfortable. The
buses and ticket offices for all the major carriers are found at the new bus station located
near Iguatemi Shopping Center. Iquatemi is about a 30 minute walk from downtown or
10 minutes by taxi. There is also an older bus station located downtown.
d. Maintain contacts with your home institution. While such a tip is obvious, it is
easily overlooked – especially when you are rushing to leave the home institution. During
your visit, there may be times when you need something mailed or completed such as a
grant application or other time dependent tasks. It also helps to have a contact person if
your documents are lost or stolen. A university directory is also handy.
e. Bring your documents and make sure they are all in order. Perhaps the most
important tip we can provide at the beginning is to stress that you must bring all your
documents and they must be in order. When you receive your Brazilian visa they require,
as all visas do, to enter the country by a certain date, for instance, within 90 days of issue.
If you do not enter Brazil in the allotted time you run the risk of being returned to your
home country and re-enter Brazil. Do not be fooled if you are permitted to board the
plane from the home country and/or allowed to enter Brazil because the error will
eventually be discovered by the Federal Police when you register. Please note that your
visa will state “Registration with Brazilian Federal Police Required Within 30 Days From
Date of First Arrival.”
When you apply for your visa, it will be a research type visa such as Vitem – I.
Among the many requirements is an invitation letter which is best obtained from the
Reitor or Reitoria of your host institution. It should state your position at the host
institution (i.e., professor visitante), length of visit, and how much you will be paid. The

letter should be in Portuguese. A letter from your Brazilian host is good but one from the
Reitor or Reitoria is better. If you visit is being funded by a grant agency include the
letter of acceptance.
Check the Brazilian Consulate website for the visa most appropriate for you. The
choice of visa is important because arriving on a tourist visa, for example, will prohibit
you from being paid by Brazilian government agencies. Depending on where you live,
the most inexpensive way to obtain your visa is to go to the Brazilian Consulate in person.
I (CIA) personally use a professional visa firm such as CIBT, Inc. They are expensive,
but the necessary documents can be obtained with a minimal amount of effort and in a
matter of days.
When you receive your visa, a copy of the documents you provided the Brazilian
Consulate will be returned to you. BRING THIS COPY because it is required by the
Federal Police and they will ask for it. It is easy to leave this copy in your home country
because no instructions are provided to tell you that this copy will be needed by the
Federal Police to process your registration card. Finally, when you enter the country you
will receive a copy of the custom form (Cartão de Entrada/Saída) that was filled out on
the plane. SAVE THIS COPY because it must be presented upon leaving Brazil. If this
copy is lost, which is easy to do because of its small size, you run the risk of receiving a
heavy fine and detention.
You must also bring notarized copies of your birth certificate, marriage certificate
(if married), and the birth certificates of any children you might have. These documents
will be needed when you apply, for example, to obtain your workbook (Carteira de
Trabalho e Previdência Social)

f. Obtaining General information about Campina Grande. Campina Grande is the
second largest city in the state of Paraíba only behind the capitol city of João Pessoa. The
population of Campina Grande is approximately 376,132. We suggest you look at the
websites hosted by the state of Paraíba and by the universities. An easily readable book
on the state of Paraíba is the Atlas Escolar Paraíba (3rd edition) published in 2002 by
Editora Grafset, João Pessoa, Paraíba (ISBN 85-85893-05-2).

g. Getting around Campina Grande the first week. As we mentioned, the bus
system is good and inexpensive. Taxis are an expensive way of traveling but nonetheless
useful. Be advised that fares double on weekends. To reduce the chance of being
overcharged we recommend developing a relationship with a particular cab driver. BETO
TAXI (9312-4069) is an extremely reliable company and has experience dealing with
Americans. If you are looking for an inexpensive downtown hotel, we recommend the
Hotel Mahatma Gandhi (Ave Floriano Peixoto, 338, phone: 321-5275). The Gandhi is
reasonable priced, provides breakfast and you can always find someone who speaks
English. If you need computers and related products, an excellent company is Micro
Tecnologia owned and operated by Sandrino de Aquino (Rua João da Mata, 38, phone:
3391-2065). Micro Tecnologia is also located downtown and is a 10 minute walk from
the Hotel Mahatma Gandhi.

2) In Brazil:
After you have settled in for a few days there are a number of things you must do
and must do quickly if you are to be paid by the university. If you have money from other
sources, such as the American funding agencies National Science Foundation and/or
Fulbright, the need for speed is not as pressing.
a. Report to the university. Make yourself known to the university president
(Reitor or Reitoria), your colleagues, and members of your host department. Find out
quickly if your project is indeed approved and you have been given Visiting Professor
(Professor/Professora Visitante) status. If your project (or position) is not approved, you
will find yourself in the awkward situation of having no funds. In order to receive funds
you will need to quickly get over the shock and write another project (or modify the one
that was rejected, even though you thought it was approved).
In addition to finding out the status of your project, go to the contract/financial
office and find out what documents you need to complete the contract application. Ideally
this should have been done prior to your visit. Even if the contract was completed and
approved prior to your visit, circumstances may have changed and new documents
needed. Make yourself known to the people in the contract/financial office.
b. Writing a project and getting it approved. For those readers appreciating the
idea of academic freedom, at least as practiced in the United States, the Brazilian system
of approving projects will take time to get used to. Of course, the project must be written
in Portuguese with such standard subject headings as Background, Significance, Methods,
Expected Results, References, etc. The necessary ethics approvals must also be obtained.
Where problems arise is that the project must be approved by the entire host department –

even by members of the department who have never conducted research. This is no easy
task.
We recommend you speak with several members of the department during the
writing (or re-writing) phase and include them on the project. It helps if at least one of
them is a department leader. You must also have the support of the department head and
at least some of the program heads. After the project is written, circulate the project
among members of the department. When you feel you have the necessary support a
department meeting will be scheduled. Most likely, your project will be discussed at a
regularly scheduled faculty meeting. If the project was expected to be approved prior to
your visit and was not, you will not be paid by the university because such approval is
necessary to receive a contract. On the positive side, you may recover the lost funds
retroactively. This funding is by no means guaranteed and is at the discretion of the
Reitora, or Reitor
When the department meeting is scheduled to discuss your project go to the
meeting. If you are advised not to go – go anyway. Your project will be discussed by a
department advocate typically selected by the department head. Discuss strategy before
the meeting and be prepared to outline the project and the advantages it will offer faculty
members and students. Such advantages include increasing the publication rate of faculty,
student involvement, further collaboration between the host and home institution, and the
submission of grants. The vote will be taken, most likely in your presence. After the vote
is taken, the department head will forward the results to the Reitoria or Reitor who in turn
will forward the information to the people responsible for writing the contract (assuming

one has not been issued previously). Confirm that this is done. A sample project is
attached at the end of this document.
c. Obtaining the necessary documents to be paid as a Foreign
Professor/Professora Visitante. There are a number of documents that must be obtained
and a medical examination needed. While all the tasks described below appear daunting,
follow our suggestions and they can be done within a week. If you are living outside the
city, or are far from downtown, consider staying in a hotel for several days. If you arrive
during June be advised that hotel space will be hard to find because of the São João
Festival which takes up the entire month. If you do not have a working knowledge of
Portuguese you will have problems. Find someone to go with you.
Before we discuss the many things that must be done, we would like to acquaint
you with the Cartorio. A cartorio is a place where your documents can be authenticated.
Cartorios also provide such services as notary, Xerox, and authenticating signatures.
They are located throughout downtown Campina Grande. We suggest you use Cartorio
Number 7 (Fernando Souto Mairor, phone: 321-3933) at Rua Cardoso Vieira Calçadão.
Cartorio Number 7 is centrally located and directly across from an excellent coffee shop
(Coffee and Chopp) and adjacent to two places where you can obtain the necessary 3x4
cm photographs (Kodak Express takes 1 minute and costs approximately 2.99 Reais) of
yourself that are required on many of the documents discussed below. We suggest that
you have 10 pictures taken. You will need about 8 but it does not hurt to have some in
reserve. The area also contains places to copy keys, a pharmacy, and other stores. It is
also a 3-5 minute walk from Banco Real (other banks are located in the same vicinity).
For direct deposit of your money, the Universidade Estadual da Paraíba requires you have

an account with Banco Real. The Federal Universities offers you a choice. You will also
need to go to a bank to pay the necessary fees to secure many of your documents.
Unfortunately, these fees are not often paid in the same government office where you
obtain the documents.
How you decide to complete the requirements is up to you. We suggest, however,
that you begin with a visit to the contract/financial office of your host university. This
office will tell you what is required. Your second stop should be to Cartorio Number 7
where you will make several authenticated copies of your documents and take the
necessary photographs at a Kodak Express outlet. Your third stop should be to register
with the Federal Police (Polícia Federal) to obtain your identification number. After the
visit to the Federal Police, what you do next is really a matter of convenience.
1. State University Requirements (Universidade Estadual da Paraíba – UEPB,
Documentos exigidos para nomeação e posse).
Some of the documents listed below will not be needed. It will depend upon your
individual case. For example, a senior level professor will not need to bring a copy of
his/her Ph.D. A copy, however, might be useful nonetheless. Once you have given this
information to the contract/financial office a contract will be created and the necessary
signatures obtained after which you will be notified. This could take some time and it
does not hurt to contact the office periodically to inquire about the progress.

10. Two fotos 3 x 4cm (photographs)
2. Register with the Federal Police (Polícia Federal).
The Polícia Federal is located on Avenida Severino Cabral near Iguatemi
Shopping Center which is about a 30 minute walk from downtown. The office you need
is called Setor de Passaporte (passport department) and they are only open from 1-4 pm
(phone: 3341-6600). We advise you to arrive early because the lines can be long. Once
inside, you will show the officer your passport and they will request your passport, all
visa related documents (the copies of the documents you submitted during the visa
request), and an address (with phone number) where you are staying. They will also
request two 3x4 photographs, an authenticated copy of your passport (including all pages
related to Brazil, and the front pages). We suggest that before visiting the Federal Police,
have these photographs and passport pages with you. Assuming all is in order, you will
be asked to pay a nominal processing fee. This fee can be paid at a bank such as Banco
Real, or Banco do Brasil. Once you return with the receipt (and any other requested
documents), you will be finger printed (all fingers) and issued a temporary residence card
(Restabelecimento Registro Temporário) with your photograph on a slip of white paper.
This paper is easily damaged so it is suggested you have it covered in plastic. This can be

done at a Cartorio. A plastic card will be issued several months later. Most likely the card
will not be mailed. You will return to the Federal Police and pick it up. Keep this card (or
at least the number) with you. It will be asked for along with your C.P.F. number
(Cadastro de Pessoa Física, a type of social security number) on all your official
documents.
3. Obtaining a C.P.F. (Cadastro de Pessoa Física) card.
The C.P.F. is a Brazilian version of a social security card. First, go to Banco do
Brasil or a Correios (post office) and ask for a Protocolo de C.P.F. (C.P.F. Protocol), you
will be asked to pay approximately 5.50 Reais. In return, you will be given a receipt and
48 hours later visit the Ministério da Fazenda (Ministry of Economy) located on the
Avenida Canal approximately 15 minutes from downtown. Once at the ministry, take a
number, and when called upon present the receipt, your passport, and proof of your
address (for example, a Declaração from your hotel or place of residence verified by a
Cartório) to the clerk. At the time you will be given a temporary card followed a few
weeks later by a permanent plastic card. Once you receive the C.P.F. keep the number
with you because it will be needed on official documents.
4. Obtaining a Carteira de Trabalho e Previdência Social Workbook.
The Carteira de Trabalho e Previdência Social is a book that employers stamp and
sign to document the work history of their employees. In the case of professor/professora
visitantes estrangeiro, the book itself is not needed but the P.I.S. (Programa de
Intergração Social) number assigned to you is. The university needs the workbook to
generate the P.I.S. number which will be one of the numbers needed by the university to
authorize your payments. When you get the workbook, present a Xerox copy of the first

two pages to the university financial office (phone: 3315-3404).You can obtain the
Carteira de Trabalho e Previdência by going to the Ministério do Trabalho e Emprego
located on Rua Coronel João Lourenço Porto number 310 (phone: 3341-6634). It is
located about 10 minutes from downtown. Prior to visiting the ministry we suggest that
you bring two 3x4 cm photographs and the following necessary documents WITH
AUTHENTICATED COPIES:
1. C.P.F. (Cadastro de Pessoa Física)
2. Birth Certificate (be warned that your birth certificate may have to be officially
translated. This will cost you R$ 100.00 (cem Reais).
3. Certidão de Casamento (Marriage Certificate)
4. Certidão de Nascimento dos Filhos (birth certificate of your children, if any)
5. Comprovante de Residência (Proof of place of residence, typically this can an
authenticated letter from your hotel or a recent utility bill with your name. If you are a
guest in a colleague’s home, bring a recent copy of their bill along with an authenticated
Declaração by your host that you are living with that host. You might consider having at
least 3 original Declarações with attached copies of the Bill because they are needed
when opening a bank account, etc.)
6. Passaporte (Passport). Copy the identification page and the page containing your
Brazilian visa.
5. Obtaining a Atestado de Saúde Ocupacional (Occupational Health Examination).
In order to receive your contract you must also obtain medical clearance. This
examination is rather simple and consists of health related questions, a blood pressure
reading, and some simple reflex tests. Unfortunately, you can only obtain such

examinations from pre-approved physicians. The one we recommend is located near the
Ministério do Trabalho e Emprego (where you obtain your workbook). Dr. Rual Da
Costa Agra Filho is located at Rua Vidal de Negreiros, 164 – first floor. The fee is
nominal about R$ 25.00 (vinte e cinco Reais).
6. Opening a bank account.
The Universidade Estadual da Paraíba requires for direct deposit that you have a
bank account at Banco Real. The Universidade Federal de Campina Grande and the
Universidade Federal da Paraiba gives you a choice. To open an account you will need:
a. Proof of place of residence (as we mentioned previously this can be authenticated letter
from your hotel or a recent utility bill with your name. If you are a guest in a colleague’s
home, bring a recent copy of their bill along with an authenticated Declaração by your
host that you are living with that host).
b. C.P.F. number.
c. Passport.
d. Your contract.
e. Official identification card such as a driver’s license.
Bring the original and copies of these documents. Once the paper work is filled
out, the bank will take about 4 days to verify your information. We recommend that you
visit the bank after 4 days to determine the status of your application. Once the
information is verified, Banco Real will contact the university to arrange direct deposit
and you will receive your bank related material in the mail.

7. Conclusion.
As we mentioned at the outset, some of these tips will not apply to your individual
case. They will not if you have funds, for example, from the National Science Foundation
or from international programs run by CNPq, CAPES, or Fulbright. These tips will apply
if you are paid as a visiting professor from the Universidade Estadual da Paraíba and
probability the Federal Universities also. It is our goal that providing this information will
make your Brazilian experience a rewarding one.

IDENTIFICAÇÃO DO PROBLEMA E JUSTIFICATIVA
Esta proposta apresenta três projetos para serem desenvolvidos pelos departamentos
de Psicologia da Universidade Estadual da Paraíba e a Oklahoma State University. Estes
projetos nas áreas de 1) saúde mental, 2) historia da psicologia, e 3) o efeito do estresse
sobre população carcerária, representam a primeira tentativa de estabelecer uma
colaboração internacional entre Campina Grande e Stillwater-Oklahoma na área da
psicologia. Professores e estudantes de ambos os departamentos pretendem interagir no
desenvolvimento desta pesquisa.
A idéia inicial deste intercâmbio entre os dois programas aconteceu em 2002 quando
o Dr. Abramson aceitou o convite para visitar o departamento de psicologia e fazer uma
palestra sobre como a ciência da psicologia poderia avançar no Brasil. Como resultado
direto desta visita, o Dr. Abramson doou dois computadores ao departamento de
psicologia, e entendimentos começaram em ambos dos departamentos e a nível de
reitoria sobre como os departamentos poderiam colaborar.
Em 2005, os entendimentos continuaram com a atual reitora Marlene Alves de Souza
Luna. Foi acordado que a Professora Aline Lobato chefiaria a Coordenação de Assuntos
Internacionais, Professor Sebastián Sánchez visitaria a Universidade Estadual de
Oklahoma durante um mês e o Dr. Abramson dedicaria o seu ano sabático à Universidade
Estadual da Paraíba. Durante a visita, o Professor Sánchez foi hospedado pelo
departamento de psicologia. Observou os trabalhos do departamento, conheceu as
facilidades de pesquisa da universidade na área da Educação e pronunciou uma palestra
na Escola de Estudos Internacionais.
Outras discussões se seguiram entre o Prof. Abramson e membros interessados dos
departamentos de psicologia das duas universidades. Durante o mês de Julho de 2005, um
encontro promovido pela professora Aline Lobato e o Professor Abramson e outros
membros do departamento que estavam interessados em participar da pesquisa. Nos
meses seguintes foi compilada uma lista de professores e alunos interessados nesta
pesquisa. Como resultado desta lista e discussões subseqüentes, foram identificadas três
áreas de interesse para os professores do departamento de psicologia da Universidade

Estadual da Paraíba. São elas, em ordem de prioridade: 1) Saúde Mental, 2) História da
Psicologia no Brasil, e 3) Estresse na População Carcerária.
1. SAÚDE MENTAL
Uma das prioridades do ensino e da pesquisa em ambos os departamentos é na área
da saúde mental. Saúde Mental afeta a qualidade de vida dos brasileiros inclusive dos que
vivem nos Estado Unidos e tem impacto direto sobre a economia de ambos países.
Dados inter-culturais sobre a psicoterapia estão faltando e conseguir este dados é muito
importante para os terapeutas que nos Estados Unidos tratam brasileiros. A Professora
Jennifer Callahan da Universidade Estadual de Oklahoma tem desenvolvido um
questionário em psicoterapia quem será distribuído a adultos em Campina Grande e em
Stillwater Oklahoma. Esta pesquisa é original porque representa uma das primeiras
tentativas em comparar as amostras brasileiras com as dos Estados Unidos.
1.1. OBJETIVOS:
O objetivo deste estudo é considerar as expectativas que os adultos brasileiros tem
sobre psicoterapia e comparar estes dados com os dados dos Estados Unidos. O
Professor Charles I. Abramson da Universidade Estadual de Oklahoma e o Professor
(PROFESSORES INTERESSADOS NO DEPARTAMENTO DE PICOLOGIA) do
departamento de Psicologia da UEPB coordenarão este estudo.
1.2. METODOLOGIA
O questionário foi desenvolvido pela Dra. Jennifer Callahan no departamento de
psicologia da Universidade Estadual de Oklahoma e contem sete partes de um total de
106 questões. Pessoas com 18 anos e mais serão submetidos o questionário inteiro que
está sendo traduzido ao português. Espera-se conseguir uma amostra de ao menos 100
indivíduos. Antes da aplicação do questionário o grupo de pesquisa poderá mudar
questões, se necessário, para melhor adapta-lo à compreensão da população brasileira. Os
dados obtidos com este questionário serão comparados com amostras dos Estados Unidos.

Antes da aplicação do questionário, os estudantes e os professores da UEPB terão
a oportunidade de manifestar se concordam em participar ou não. Os estudantes da UEPB
ganharão significativa experiência no uso da pesquisa quantitativa e na sua metodologia.
No processo de trabalho com professores e estudantes de psicologia, poderão ser
desenvolvidos novos questionários. O estudo aqui esboçado é somente um ponto de
partida que esperamos possa continuar no futuro.
1.3 RESULTADOS ESPERADOS
Os resultados da pesquisa serão publicados em revistas internacionais e
apresentados em encontros nacionais e internacionais. Mais importante, os resultados
desta pesquisa poderão mudar os métodos do exercício da psicoterapia utilizados no
tratamento da população brasileira e nos Estados Unidos. Esperamos também utilizar os
dados para conseguir fundos adicionais tanto nos Estados Unidos como em agencies
internacionais no sentido de expandir a nossa colaboração.

4.1 – CONSIDERAÇÕES GERAIS:
Os problemas relacionados à Saúde Mental contribuem muito para a morbidade
mundial, causando enormes custos econômicos e sociais. Muita repercussão tem a
invalidez mental, representada por uma alta porcentagem de indenização por invalidez no

trabalho e a falta de produtividade dos trabalhadores que continuam a trabalhar apesar de
tal problema.
O stress pode ser entendido globalmente como uma perturbação do equilíbrio,
uma interrupção do encadeamento regular dos hábitos, que força o indivíduo a tentar
reencontrar seu equilíbrio anterior ou esperar um novo.
O stress ocupacional é um fenômeno que toma amplitude e atinge todos os setores
e todas as categorias profissionais. Portanto, é importante compreender este “mal” e
sensibilizar as pessoas sobre os perigos que ele representa, se não levado a sério.
Diante de tantos problemas, faz-se necessário compreender mais este fenômeno
para poder propor ações que possam ser operacionalizadas, visando o bem estar das
pessoas. Os professores e alunos envolvidos na linha de pesquisa Psicologia da Saúde se
encarregarão do desenvolvimento destas pesquisas aqui no estado da Paraíba.
4.2: OBJETIVOS:
Avaliar o stress e o bem-estar ao qual estão submetidos os motoristas de ônibus e
micro-ônibus;
Verificar o stress e o bem-estar ao qual estão submetidos os trabalhadores do
Serviço Público de Saúde;
Averiguar o stress e o bem-estar de professores e estudantes universitários no ano
de conclusão de curso.
Validar o questionário dobre, desenvolvido por Callahan para uso no Brasil.

4.3 – METODOLOGIA:
O estudo será transversal e com abordagem quanti-qualitativa. A população a ser
estudada constará de pessoas que residem em Campina Grande e a amostra será
delimitada posteriormente.
Será utilizado um questionário de stress e bem-estar acrescido de questões
pertinentes e adaptadas à realidade na qual será aplicado o instrumento de coleta de dados.
Para a análise dos dados objetivos será utilizado o software SSPS e para as
questões subjetivas acrescidas, será utilizada a análise temática de conteúdo.
4.4 - RESULTDOS ESPERADOS:
Além de identificar e avaliar os dados coletados eles devem ser analisados e
comparados com a análise dos dados coletados em Oklahoma. Isto é, a produção de
conhecimento advinda das investigações ora propostas poderão originar outras pesquisas,
como também deverão ser socializadas no campo científico, através de publicações
nacionais e internacionais.
Espera-se que com o término desta pesquisa, seja possível propor planos de ações
visando amenizar ou prevenir o stress, proporcionando mais bem-estar,
conseqüentemente mais saúde mental.

2.1 – CONSIDERAÇÕES GERAIS:
A questão da Saúde Mental é um forte ponto de intercessão entre o Departamento
de Psicologia da Universidade Estadual da Paraíba (UEPB) e o Departamento de
Psicologia da Universidade Estadual de Oklahoma. Por um lado, a professora deste
Departamento, Jennifer Callahan, tem se preocupado especialmente em compreender
melhor brasileiros que moram em seu Estado e precisam de acompanhamento
psicoterápico, como também vem desenvolvendo instrumentos de coleta de dados sobre a
Psicoterapia. Por outro lado, as professoras de Estágio Supervisionado em Psicologia
Clínica, Maria do Carmo Eulálio, Elizabeth Holanda e Regina Nóbrega Santana, vêem se
preocupando com a demanda que procura o Serviço da Clínica Escola de Psicologia na
UEPB. Esta demanda é formada por um número elevado de estudantes universitários,
com variadas queixas que perpassa da separação da família e de sua cultura de origem no
início dos estudos, já que Campina Grande caracteriza-se também por ser um pólo de
Ensino Superior importante da região Nordeste, às crises existenciais de final de curso,
entre outras tantas questões. O Serviço oferecido é gratuito, tendo a cobertura do Serviço
Único de Saúde (SUS), o atendimento psicoterápico é realizado pelos alunos estagiários
sob a supervisão de um professor habilitado para tal função.
2.2 – OBJETIVOS:
Identificar e comparar o que pensam estudantes das Universidades Estaduais da
Paraíba e Oklahoma sobre a psicoterapia.
Validar o questionário de opiniões sobre psicoterapia para uso no Brasil.
2.3 – METODOLOGIA:
O estudo será de tipo transversal, com abordagem quanti-qualitativa.

A população a ser investigada será constituída por estudantes universitários,
independentemente do sexo, idade ou curso, que aceitem participar livremente da
pesquisa e que estejam cursando o último ano da graduação.
A amostra será estatisticamente representativa, sendo necessária a ajuda de um
estatístico para calcular o número de participantes.
Será utilizado um questionário desenvolvido nos Estados Unidos por Callahan
especialmente para conhecer as opiniões das pessoas sobre a Psicoterapia. Como também
deverão ser acrescidas questões objetivas e subjetivas pertinentes às necessidades
contextuais.
Os dados coletados deverão ser analisados segundo o software SSPS e as questões
abertas, segundo a análise temática de conteúdo.
2.4 – RESULTADOS ESPERADOS:
Mediante os dados coletados e analisados, espera-se socializar o conhecimento
em forma de publicações científicas locais, nacionais e internacionais. Estes resultados
serão muito importantes para a clínica de Psicologia da UEPB, pois poderá oferecer um
Serviço de melhor qualidade à demanda que o procura, como também os supervisores de
estágios e alunos poderão oferecer um melhor trabalho. Já para os professores envolvidos
em Oklahoma, os resultados deverão lhes proporcionar, além da validação do
questionário em outra cultura, análises comparativas.
O intercâmbio de conhecimentos será de grande valia para os envolvidos
diretamente, como a população em geral, através dos benefícios que poderão usufruir
direta ou indiretamente.

2. HISTÓRIA DA PSICOLOGIA NO BRASIL
A história da psicologia e educação como ensinada nos Estados Unidos focaliza as
contribuições européias. Os textos americanos sobre a história da psicologia e educação
dão muita importância a Grécia, Roma, Alemanha, França e Inglaterra. A contribuição
brasileira à psicologia e educação é negligenciada. Brasil tem uma rica história no campo
da psicologia e da educação. Esta pesquisa pretende recuperar a história desta
contribuição. Este projeto vai ter o benefício de servir como recurso de ensino para
professores brasileiros. Não há livros em inglês dedicados à história da psicologia e
educação no Brasil.
2.1 OBJETIVOS:
O Objetivo desta pesquisa é coletar e publicar material educacional
sobre a história da psicologia e educação no Brasil. O material será disponibilizado em
português e inglês.
2.2. METODOLOGIA
Nos últimos anos o Dr. Abramson e seus estudantes têm criado websites
documentando a história da African American in Psychology, American Women in
Psychology, e mais recentemente a contribuição japonesa á Psicologia. Estes websites
estão hospedados no servidor da Oklahoma State University Department of Psychology.
Dados tem sido também reunidos sobre a história da Latin American in Psychology mas
não temos informação sobre a história da psicologia no Brasil. Este projeto é de interesse
dos Professores Laercia M de Medeiros, Wilmar Roberto Gaião, e Sebastian Sanchez.
Nosso ultimo objetivo é publicar a contribuição dos psicólogos brasileiros. Porém
o primeiro objetivo do projeto é criar um website. Todos os outros websites criados pelo
Dr. Abramson contem a mesma informação e estão formatados no mesmo estilo.
Para a história da psicologia no Brasil podem servir de ponto de partida, encontros
pessoais com profissionais do Estado da Paraíba próximos à temática, como por exemplo

o Prof. Leôncio Camino, grande expoente da Psicologia Social no Brasil, professor da
UFPB e Cleonice Camino, hoje aposentada, mas ainda produzindo.
Os nomes incluídos no website serão recomendados pelo grupo de pesquisa
brasileiro e incluem os psicólogos que trabalham no campo da educação. O website
começará com um resumo da historia da psicologia no Brasil e contemplará uma lista em
ordem alfabética dos psicólogos selecionados. Além disso, incluiremos listas alfabéticas
por áreas: clinica, saúde mental, educação e psicologia experimental.
Os dados para cada participante incluem fotografia, momentos importantes da
carreira, links com sites correlacionados (se houver), e links com publicações. A website
será hospedada na Universidade Estadual de Oklahoma e na Universidade Estadual da
Paraíba, tanto em português como em inglês.
2.3 RESULTADOS ESPERADOS
Os resultados desta pesquisa serão imediatos. Os pesquisadores e os estudantes de todos
os níveis do sistema educacional terão aceso, pela primeira vez, a contribuições
brasileiras à psicologia e educação tanto em português como em inglês. Além disso,
procuraremos publicar e apresentar as nossas descobertas na Clarion Society, sociedade
internacional dedicada à história da psicologia.
3. STRESSE E BEM ESTAR DE DETENTOS
O estado de Oklahoma tem uma das altas taxas de população presa nos Estados
Unidos. Como resultado disso há programas dedicados a reduzir o estresse dos presos.
Estes programas incluem aulas de educação e cuidados. O objetivo desta pesquisa é
comparar o estresse e bem estar dos presos em Oklahoma com os presos em Campina
Grande. Os resultados deste estudo podem ser usados para reduzir o estresse em ambas as
populações de presos. O questionário foi elaborado pela Professora Jennifer Callahan da
Universidade Estadual de Oklahoma.

3.1 OBJETIVOS:
O objetivo deste estudo é realizar uma pesquisa sobre o estresse e bem estar da
população carcerária de Campina Grande e compara-los com os resultados de instituições
semelhantes em Oklahoma.
3.2 METODOLOGIA
O questionário foi elaborado pela Dra. Jennifer Callahan do departamento de
psicologia da Universidade Estadual de Oklahoma. Este estudo interessa à professora
Aline Lobato e se preocupa com as reações a experiências estressantes que a população
pode experimentar na vida e com as estratégias que podem utilizar para lidar com
estressantes. São 302 questões. Antes de aplicar o questionário os membros da equipe
decidirão, se necessário, modificar as questões no sentido de torná-las mais adequadas à
população brasileira. A amostra será de no mínimo 150 pessoas com mais de 18 anos,
incluindo duas categorias: criminosos e não-criminosos. Os dados serão codificados por
sexo. Os dados obtidos serão comparados com dados nos Estados Unidos. Cópia em
inglês vai anexa.
Como descrito na seção sobre a saúde mental, antes da aplicação do questionário,
os estudantes e os professores da UEPB terão a oportunidade de manifestar se concordam
ou não em participar. Os estudantes da UEPB ganharão significativa experiência no uso
da pesquisa quantitativa e na sua metodologia. No trabalho com professores e estudantes
de psicologia, novos usos dos questionários poderão ser desenvolvidos. O estudo aqui
esboçado é somente um ponto de partida que esperamos possa continuar no futuro.
3.3. RESULTADOS ESPERADOS
Os resultados deste estudo acreditarão imediatamente à UEPB e ao departamento de
psicologia da UEPB a liderança na psicologia forense no nordeste do Brasil. A Professora

Aline Lobato organizou recentemente o primeiro congresso internacional de psicologia
forense no Brasil promovido pela UEPB. A psicologia forense é uma área em rápido
processo de expansão e pesquisa no Brasil e nos Estados Unidos o que proporcionará a
oportunidade de ter bancos de dados que possibilitarão a comparação das populações
carcerárias no mundo e no Brasil. Os dados serão analisados e publicados em revistas
internacionais e apresentados em congressos nacionais e internacionais. Como no estudo
comparativo sobre saúde mental, esperamos também utilizar os dados para conseguir
fundos adicionais tanto nos Estados Unidos como em agencies internacionais no sentido
de expandir a nossa colaboração.

como para transporte aos lugares da pesquisa e assistência aos estudantes.
