IAG IPGH SOUTH AMERICAN GEOCENTRIC REFERENCE SYSTEM SIRGAS NEWSLETTER # 5 February 1998 NIMA IAG IPGH NIMA TABLE OF CONTENTS EDITORIAL COMPOSITION OF THE PROJECT COMMITTEE WORKING GROUP III: VERTICAL DATUM SCIENTIFIC COUNCIL SIRGAS AT IAG SCIENTIFIC ASSEMBLY, RIO’97 INFORMATION ON WORKING GROUP III SIRGAS Project Newsletter # 5 Page 1 IAG IPGH NIMA EDITORIAL I have the pleasure to present to readers the fifth edition of the SIRGAS Project Newsletter. This issue has a very special meaning, since all of the objectives and goals proposed for the project at Asunción Conference, in October 1993, were reached during 1997, according to what was planned in that occasion. The crowning moment of the project occurred during the Session 1.3 (“SIRGAS Project”) of the Symposium 1 (“Advances in Positioning and Reference Frames”) of the International Association of Geodesy Scientific Assembly, when the final results of the activities of Working Groups I and II were presented and the publication “SIRGAS Final Report, Working Groups I and II” was distributed. More details about the session are presented in this newsletter. During the assembly a business meeting of the project was also carried out, when the Working Group III (“Vertical Datum”) was created and its president was elected, Eng. Roberto Teixeira Luz, from Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE). This group has the arduous mission on the development of activities toward the definition and realization of a unique altimetric system for the South-American continent. The composition of this new working group and some information about the activities already done can be found in this newsletter. I would like to take this opportunity to stand out the cooperation and support from all participants of the project, responsible for its great success, and to wish to readers and family a happy and successful new year. In this session the final results of the activities of Working Groups I “Reference System” and II “Geocentric Datum” were shown, through the presentation of the following papers : • Fortes L. P. S. - An overview of the SIRGAS project. • Hoyer M.; Arciniegas S.; Duarte K.; Fagard H.; Maturana R.; Torchetti R.; Drewes H.; Kumar M. & Seeger G. - The definition of the Reference System in the SIRGAS Project. • Kaniuth K.; Drewes H.; Stuber K.; Tremel H. & Moirano J. - Final results of the SIRGAS 95 GPS network processing at DGFI/I. • Slater, J. - The NIMA’s derivation of station coordinates for the SIRGAS Continental Reference Network. • Vargas R. B. - Activities of the Working Group II “Geocentric Datum” SIRGAS Project. • Drewes H. - Time evolution of the SIRGAS Reference Frame. • Moirano J.; Brunini C.; Drewes H. & Kaniuth K. - Realization of a geocentric reference system in Argentina in connection with SIRGAS. • Costa S. M. A.; Pereira K. D. & Beattie D. - The integration of Brazilian horizontal network into SIRGAS. • Acuña I.; Subiza W.; Rovera H.; Vergara G.; Rodino P.; Barbato F. & Costa S. M. The redefinition of the geodetic reference system of Uruguay into SIRGAS frame. • Drewes H.; Tremel H. & Hernandez N. - Adjustment of the new Venezuelan National GPS network within the SIRGAS reference frame. • Kaniuth K. - Exploiting the SIRGAS colocations for determining elevation dependent phase center variations of geodetic GPS antennas. It was distributed, at the same session, the document “SIRGAS Final Report, Working Groups I and II”. Readers interested in receiving this document should send a request to the President of the Project’s Committee. SIRGAS Project Newsletter # 5 Page 7 IAG IPGH NIMA A business meeting of the project was held on September 06, 1997, when the activities performed until that occasion were evaluated. Considering the spectrum of the main objectives of Working Groups I and II, it was discussed the consequences of the project regarding the altimetric component of the reference system. By this way, the Working Group III “Vertical Datum” was created. INFORMATION ON WORKING GROUP III: VERTICAL DATUM (Prepared by the President, Eng. Roberto Teixeira Luz) Created during the business meeting of SIRGAS Project at Rio de Janeiro on September 6, 1997, the group has the following objectives : establishment of a Vertical Datum for the South-American continent and the link of the existing altimetric netwoks to it. A meeting was also held on September 9, with the components of the group attending the IAG Scientific Assembly, when the first activities of the group were discussed : • collection of information on levelling networks and tide gauge stations used in vertical datum of each country ; • characterization of levelling of the stations of SIRGAS Reference Network; • consultation about the procedures on compatibilization between GPS heights and the various national altimetric systems ; • set-up of a bibliographic database related to the group subject ; and • definition of period and place of first business meeting of WG-III. Information regarding the first three topics above will be object of a request to be sent to the national representatives on the SIRGAS Committee. Concerning the meeting, its definition should be done in early 1998. SIRGAS Project Newsletter # 5 Page 8 IAG IPGH NIMA INFORMATION ON 1st WORKING GROUP III MEETING, HELD FROM AUGUST 11 TO 13, 1998, IN SANTIAGO, CHILE (prepared by the President, Eng. Roberto Teixeira Luz) AGENDA 1) Welcome to participants (TCL Oscar Cifuentes Zambrano, IGM Chile) 2) General status of SIRGAS Project (Eng. Roberto Teixeira Luz) 3) Preparatory presentation (Dr. Hermann Drewes) 4) Discussions on height system, reference surface and realization of the reference system 5) Presentation of related papers 6) Status of Working Group II (“Geocentric Datum”) activities (Mayor Rodrigo Barriga Vargas) 7) Resolutions and next activities planning DISCUSSIONS The discussions was started with a reviewing of concepts and practical problems involved in the definition and realization of a vertical reference system, presented by Dr. Hermann Drewes, WG.III Scientific Consultant. During this presentation, Dr. Drewes made some recommendations, which were discussed by the participants of the meeting. These discussions served as origin to the resolutions presented at the end of this publication. Within these discussions, the WG.III members decided that the group would have more scientific consultants, indicating Prof. Christopher Jekeli (OSU, EUA) and Denizar Blitzkow (USP, Brasil) to be invited to participate. As contribution to discussions, some WG.III participants presented technical and scientific papers related to the WG.III activities. PARTICIPANTS Eng.
