Brazil | Favelas
WHAT IS MEANT BY FAVELA ?
Standard Definition
“Favelas are agglomerations of
dwellings with reduced dimensions,
built with inadequate materials
distributed irregularly in plots
almost always lacking urban and
social services
and equipment”.
Source: UN Habitat
Possible Alternative
Definition
Favelas are living
communities made up
of families and
professional who have
existing social
relationships and future
aspirations
Why is the definition
important ?
To achieve the Selo Casa
Azul certification there is
close attention to, and
measurement of, the
social aspects of what
constitutes a favela

“A deeper recognition of the unique social aspects of
individual communities has played a much more central role
in the planning of public housing projects in the last decade in
Sao Paulo.
The 171 low income housing units located in Paraisópolis are
the first to obtain the sustainable certification seal, Selo Casa
Azul CAIXA in the city of São Paulo. Selo Casa Azul demands
the application of advanced engineering and design to honor
the geographic contours of existing terrain, provide for the
effective use of natural resources, enable the ambient
comfort of residents, provide access to public transportation
and basic services, and to encourage the positive social
practices which influence the local community.
The wealth of sustainable design information and support
available globally, coupled with a focus on the uniqueness of
each favela, has produced a proven road map to
redevelopment.”

CONSTRUCTION SYSTEM
The acute housing deficit and the need to meet deadlines for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympic games’
planned developments require a radical change in construction standards, while reinforcing the need to meet
environmental guidelines.
The solution that is being pointed to is the promotion of industrialized building mass, implying standardization of
products and processes. Innovation increases productivity and decreases losses in order to reduce the cost of
construction.
