Oncobiology 2015 The structure of the module: This module (23th March – 2nd April) has a dual structure: lectures and seminars, and work on research projects. The Oncobiology module this year includes also the “Late 25th anniversary Symposium of Ipatimup” on the 25th March with the Special session on the 2014 MJB Award to David Lyden. The aims of the module: The Oncobiology module will have sessions to discuss biological/molecular mechanisms of cancer development and progression. Sessions will include discussion of clinical cases followed by open discussions with the students about the underlying etiological factors, the biological pathways and molecular mechanisms underlying pathological lesions. The sessions will include: 1- Presentation of clinical cases (sporadic and hereditary) 2- Pathological aspects of the tumours 3- Etiology and molecular basis of the disease Teaching staff: Senior Researchers of IPATIMUP and from the Medical Faculty, and Post-docs. 23 March Morning: 9.00-9.30 - Documents and structure of the module (Participants: R Seruca and Celso Reis) 9:30.10:00- Distribution of the projects (Raquel Seruca and Celso Reis, with the collaboration of Paula Soares, Carla Oliveira, Raquel Almeida, José Carlos Machado). 10:30 – 12:00 Projects preparation/discussion Afternoon: 15.00-17:30 - Cancer genes: Beyond the classic dual division (Participant: M Sobrinho-Simões) 17.30-19.00 – Projects preparation/discussion. 24 March Morning: 9.30-12.00 – Oncogenes and Tumor suppressor genes (Participants: Raquel Seruca) Afternoon: 14.30-17.00 – Metabolism and cancer (Participants: Valdemar Máximo, Jorge Lima, M Sobrinho-Simões). 17.30-19.00 – Projects preparation/discussion. 25 March (Auditorium) Late 25the anniversary Symposium of Ipatimup: “Understand cancer as a systemic disease: cancer is not just the tumour” 9:30 Opening/Welcome – Maria de Sousa and Manuel Sobrinho Simões 9:45 Mina Bissell – Lecture: Why don't we get more cancer?: Because half the secret of the cell is outside the cell! 10:45 Coffee break 11:15 David Lyden – Lecture What are exosomes and how are they are changing our concepts of cancer and metastasis. 12:00 General discussion 12:30 Special session: The 2014 MJB Award to David Lyden. 13:00 Closing remarks – Celso Reis and Raquel Seruca Afternoon: 15.30-18.00 – Genetic dynamics of cancer cells (Participants: José Carlos Machado, José Luís Costa, Sónia Melo) 18.00-19.00 – Projects preparation/discussion. 26 March Morning: 9.00-10:30 - Students meeting with David Lyden and Mina Bissel 10.30-13.00 – Tumor Growth and Immortalization (Participants: Paula Soares, João Vinagre, Ana Preto Afternoon: 14.30–19.00 – Projects preparation/discussion. 27 March Morning: 9.30-12.00 – Infection and cancer: “the example of Helicobacter pylori and gastric carcinoma" (Participants: Céu Figueiredo, Marina Leite, Rui Ferreira) Afternoon: 14.30–17.00 – Cell and tissue differentiation (Participants: Raquel Almeida, Leonor David, Rita Barros) 17.30-19.00 – Projects preparation/discussion 30 March Morning: 9.30-12.00 – Glycosylation in cancer.
