Preface
This is the sixth issue of the Research Report produced annually by the Secção
de Matemática of the Departamento de Ciências e Tecnologia of the Universidade
Aberta. As stated in the previous Research Reports, our goal in producing this document is to enhance the visibility of the research activities of the members of this
Secção among our colleagues in the University and our peers in the portuguese and
international research communities.
This year the Secção continued the monthly research seminar series titled “Matemática na AbERTA”, to which several members of the Secção have already contributed.
During the year 2011 the Secção lost one member who left in february, and a
new one entered the Secção in october. The number of members of the Secção was
maintained at 13, 12 of whom are now PhD holders.

João Araújo received his “Agregação” in Mathematics from the Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Ciências; the title of his “Lição de Agregação” was Prelude; Fugue
and Variations on the Centralizer.
