Anointing of the Sick
The church encourages all who are ill, about to undergo
surgery, or confined to their home due to illness to be
prayed over and anointed with sacred oil. This can take
place at a parish Mass, in the home or in the hospital.
Please do not wait for the last moment for yourself or a
loved one to be anointed and by all means speak to a
priest for more information or details.

Letter from Fr. Michael-Ivory Coast
In the beginning of this Lenten season, I want to wish
you and all the parishioners Godʹs peace and love.
May this period be for you a time of grace.
I and my community and the people we serve want to
express our gratitude for the generosity you have
shown in helping us. I know that all the fingers are not
equal but you have tried. I could even imagine that
some of you have made great sacrifices to make sure
that some brothers and sisters in Africa receive something to eat, to cover their nakedness and some kids
attend schools. We promise to make better use of what
we are going to receive.
As we continue to journey here on earth, I promise to
keep you ever in my mind. May God reward you according to his goodness !

Eu, a minha comunidade e o povo que servimos desejamos expressar a nossa gratitude pela generosidade
que mostraram em nos ajudar. Sabemos que nenhum
dedo é igual mas tentámos. Posso imaginar que alguns
de vós fizeram grandes sacrifícios para conseguirem
que alguns irmãos e irmãs na África pudessem algum
alimento, cobrir a sua nudeza e que algumas crianças
pudessem frequentar a escola. Prometemos fazer o
melhor uso possível daquilo que vamos receber.
Ao continuarmos esta jornada na terra, prometo nunca
os esquecer. Que Deus os recompense de acordo com
a Sua virtude!

Segundo Domingo da Quaresma

My Dear Friends,
It certainly gets crazy around here on Sunday mornings. For young families I can only imagine how
busy it can be. Get the kids up, feed them, dress them, get them into the car and drive to church, look for a
parking spot (not always easy to find one), get into church usually with only a moment or two to spare before
Mass begins. For those who are ministers, lectors, eucharistic ministers or altar servers its much the same,
check the readings, set up the liturgical vessels, get your alb. To be honest its not much different for the priest,
the sacristy can be a very busy place, questions, comments and even cries of outrage (but never here, not in our
sacristy!). With all this going on I sometimes wonder if we are aware of what we are about to do, celebrate,
worship.
Every time we gather around the altar all the sufferings all the agony of humanity is present. Through
the offering of the Eucharist love, forgiveness, and hope are given not just to the community present but the
whole world, and even beyond our world. As the celebration of Mass makes present the one complete sacrifice of Christ we are not only joined to heaven but in a mysterious though real way we too transcend time and
are enabled to stand at the foot the cross and close to the empty tomb! The celebration of the Eucharist is thus
the church’s most precious treasure. It should also be ours! I often think of how much the celebration of the
Eucharist meant so much to the Saints, the Martyrs and to so many others. How devoted they were to this
celebration. I think of the thousands of immigrants who came to this country bringing only their faith with
them. How much they sacrificed to build a beautiful place, a church, to celebrate the Eucharist. A place to remind them they were joined to heaven. That they were at the foot of the Cross, that they were near the empty
tomb. Our parish church is no different, it reminds us of these truths but it should also inspire us as it did our
ancestors, to love the Mass as much as they did. To approach this place with a sense of wonder, awe, adoration and reverence.
We come to church amid all the “busy-ness” of our lives to discover God, we should leave the church
feeling touched by Him. Yet if we do not have this sense of mystery, awe and reverence we won’t know we
have been touched by God. I truly believe that if we are to feel the hand of God in our lives we need to recapture devotion to the real abiding presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Belief in the Eucharist presence of
Christ does not come with reading about it, or planning more “dynamic” liturgies or fostering better participation. Yes, these things are necessary but devotion does not stem from any person’s skills. It comes from faith,
from the humility of the mind to accept and to say “yes” to what seems unbelievable, namely that the Body
and Blood of Christ are present under the appearance of bread and wine. How precious that moment when receive our Lord in Holy Communion! It is a very personal time, a time when we not only receive Him but He
receives us. When if we are open He will speak to us, encourage us. A moment that is rushed or invaded will
leave us feeling empty. But a moment when approached with awe and reverence will allow us to feel the very
hand of God. Moments of silence and stillness are very important, after all Elijah found God not in the earthquake, not in fire, not in the thunder, or rushing wind but in the quiet, gentle breeze.
Start your Sunday a few minutes earlier, slow down, explain to children that this is a holy time, put
away the cares and demands of the day. Look around at the beauty of the church, notice its connection to
heaven, gaze upon the cross, recall the joy of the first Easter, be still and approach Communion with reverence
and awe. Then we will hear God speak in the depth of our hearts and feel his touch upon our souls.. We will
know we are His and He is ours!

Meus Caros Amigos,
Há, sem dúvida, uma barafunda, aqui à volta, aos domingos de manhã. Por isso, posso imaginar
como as famílias jovens devem ficar atarefadas. Levantar os garotos, dar-lhes de comer, metê-los no carro,
levá-los para a igreja, procurar um lugar para arrumar o carro (nem sempre é fácil encontrar um), entrar
na igreja com, normalmente um só momento ou dois antes do começo da Missa. Para aqueles que são ministros, leitores, ministros eucarísticos ou servem no altar, é mais ou menos a mesma coisa, verificar as leituras,
pôr em ordem os cálices litúrgicos, as vestes. Para ser honesto não é muito mais diferente para o padre, a
sacristia pode ser um lugar muito ocupado, perguntas, comentários e mesmo gritos ofensivos (mas nunca
aqui, não na nossa sacristia!). Com tudo isto a acontecer pergunto a mim mesmo se nós estamos cientes
daquilo que se vai fazer, isto é, celebrar, adorar.
Cada vez que nos reunimos à volta do altar todo o sofrimento, toda a agonia da humanidade está presente. Através da oferta de amor da Eucaristia, o perdão e a esperança são oferecidos não só à comunidade
presente mas ao mundo inteiro e mesmo para além do nosso mundo. Com a celebração da Missa apresentamos o sacrifício completo de Cristo, a quem não só nos iremos juntar no céu mas num pensamento real misterioso, transcendendo o tempo, somos capazes de permanecer aos pés da Cruz e perto do túmulo vazio! A
celebração da Eucaristia é, por isso, o tesouro mais precioso da igreja. E devia ser também o nosso! Eu muitas vezes penso no grande significado que a Eucaristia tem para os Santos, os Mártires e para tantos outros.
Que devotos eles eram nesta celebração. Penso nos milhares de imigrantes que vieram para este país trazendo só a sua fé com eles. Quanto sacrificaram para construír um lindo lugar, uma igreja para celebrar a
Eucaristia. Um lugar para os recordar que se iriam juntar no céu. Que eles estavam aos pés da Cruz, que estavam perto do túmulo vazio. A nossa igreja paroquial não é diferente, recorda-nos destas verdades mas,
também, nos inspira como aconteceu com os nossos antepassados, para amar a Missa tal como eles amaram.
Para nos aproximarmos deste lugar com um senso de vontade de aprofundar, de adoração e de reverência.
Nós vimos para a Igreja no meio de todos os afazeres da nossa vida para descobrir Deus, devíamos
deixar a igreja sentindo-nos tocados por Ele. Contudo, se não tivessemos este senso de mistério, receio e reverência nos não saberíamos se tinhamos sido tocados por Deus. Acredito piedosamente que para sentirmos
a mão de Deus nas nossas vidas precisamos de recapturar a devota presença real permanente de Cristo; esta,
não vem com leituras sobre o assunto, com o planear de liturgias”dinâmicas” ou beneficiar de uma participação melhor. Sim, essas coisas são necessárias mas, a devoção não cresce dos conhecimentos duma pessoa.
Vem da fé, da humildade do pensamento para aceitar e dizer “sim” ao que parece inacreditável, nomeadamente que o Corpo e Sangue de Cristo está presente sobre a aparência de pão e vinho. Que precioso é o momento em que recebemos Nosso Senhor na Sagrada Comunhão! Ė uma altura muito pessoal, uma altura
quando não só O recebemos como Ele nos recebe. Quando nos expomos Ele fala connosco, encoraja-nos. Se
nos precipitamos ou invadimos ficamos vazios. Mas, quando nos aproximamos com humildade e reverência
faz-nos sentir a mão de Deus. Momentos de silêncio e concentração são muito importantes, afinal Elias não
encontrou Deus num tremor de terra, no fogo, na trovoada ou na ventania; mas na brisa suave e gentil.
Comece o seu Domingo uns minutos mais cedo, vá devagar, explique às crianças que é um tempo sagrado,
afaste os cuidados e as exigências do dia. Analise a beleza da igreja, note a sua ligação com o céu, contemple
a cruz, recorde a alegria da primeira Páscoa, esteja calmo e aproxime-se da Comunhão com reverência e curiosidade. Então nós ouviremos Deus a falar nas profundidades dos nossos corações e sentiremos o seu contacto
nas
nossas
almas.

First Communion Parents Meetings: Parents of children who are preparing to receive First Communion
this year are asked to attend one of the following meetings: next Sunday, March 12th from 10:00 - 11:00 am in
the high school gym, Tuesday, March 14th or Wednesday, March 15th from 6:00 - 7:00 pm in the chapel.
Please be sure to join us for this very important meeting.
First Communion Retreat: Our grade 2 retreat is
coming up soon ~ Saturday, March 25th from 12 noon
to 5:00 pm (includes the 4:00 pm Mass) or Sunday,
March 26th, from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm (includes the 9:00
am Mass). During this one-day “retreat”, the children
will enjoy a day of prayer, games, songs, pizza, activities and lessons on how to receive the host at First
Communion. We ask you to keep these little ones in
your prayers as they prepare to join us at the Eucharist
table.
Penance Service for Grades 2 thru 5: On Saturday,
March 18th at 11:00 am in the church we will have a
special Lenten Penance Service for all children in
grades 2 thru 5. We urge parents to encourage their
children to frequent the Sacrament of Reconciliation as
often as possible. This is a wonderful opportunity to
participate in a service geared to their age level.
Confirmation Retreat: All grade 10 confirmation candidates must participate in a one-day retreat which
will be held in the high school gym on Sunday, March
12th from 10:00 am - 6:00 pm (includes the 5 pm Mass).
We ask parishioners to pray for our candidates at the
continue to prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation
in April.
Primeira Comunhão – Reunião dos Pais: Estas reuniões para os pais das crianças, que se estão a preparar para receber a Primeira Comunhão este ano,
começa este Domingo. Os pais devem assistir a uma

serviço começa às 11am. As crianças que participam
neste serviço de Penitência serão dispensadas das
classes de Educação Religiosa de Domingo, Terça-feira

Retiro da Primeira Comunhão: O retiro da nossa 2a.
classe está quase a chegar ~ Sábado, 25 de Março do
Meio-dia às 5:00 pm (Missa das 4:00 pm incluída) ou
Domingo, 26 de Março, das 9:00 am - 2:00 pm (Missa
das 9:00 am incluída). Durante este “retiro” de um dia,
as crianças vão desfrutar um dia de oração, jogos, canções, pizza, actividades e lições sobre como receber a
hóstia na Primeira Comunhão. Pedimos que rezem por
estas crianças, que se estão a preparar para se aproximarem connosco, da mesa Eucarística.

The Dominican Sisters will once again be selling
breads and pies I the front of the church after the
Masses next weekend. Profits from the sale will be
used to buy medical supplies for their mission to
support the lepers.
