Besides the techniques based on Computational Fluid Dynamics, analytical approaches for the study of the chimney effect are also considered. As a result of the research, ventilation in several patterns of dwelling was analyses and the organized to serve as guidelines for the design of dwellings. Development of Concrete Hull for the Operation in Campos Basin Coordinator: Cheng Liang Yee Collaborators: Dainel Cueva, Fábio Okamoto, Fernando Stucchi, Daniel Berger, Paulo Roberto do Lago Helene, Juliana Ferreira Fernandes The use of reinforced concrete as the construction material of floating structures is not an innovation. Ships, in the world wars, and offshore platforms had been constructed by using this material. Due to the advances in the concrete technology, nowadays, it is possible to produce concrete with better structural resistance and quality, resulting in thinner and lighter structures. This research is a feasibility study of application of concrete to the construction of a FPSO hull. The results of the study showed that in spite of a larger displacement, the construction cost of the concrete hull, including the materials, the construction time, the life cycle maintenance cost and several mechanical and chemical proprieties presents many advantages against the steel one. Feasibility Study on the Use of CAD Freeware in the Teaching of Engineering Design Graphics Coordinator: Cheng Liang Yee Collaborator: Carolina Chaves Barbosa In the modern education of Engineering Design Graphics, the use of CAD technology is essential in learning of theoretical concepts, such as Projective Geometry and Geometrical Modeling, for the development of spatial abilities and the mastering of the engineering graphics communication and design tool. Within this context, there is a demand for the CAD software in the Engineering courses. Recently, there are many freeware for graphics use, such 2D vector drawing and 3D modeler applications as well as CAD software. With constant improvement and updating, the potential of these freeware for the educational use is increasing quickly. Also, due to the cost, the availability of the CAD tools to the students is relatively limited. From the viewpoint of the students, the use of freeware instead of commercial CAD tools, whose access is limited due to the cost, may mean the possibility of doing the home works or practicing the projects at home. Thus, the objective of the present research is to analyze the feasibility of applying freeware for the teaching and learning of Engineering Design Graphics. The analyses were carried out by checking the functionalities of the freeware against the requirements of the course and by collecting information from mini-courses applied to the students. Aiming the a more consistent modeling of the local climate to assess the design guidelines for the social housings, the aim of this research is carried out a review of the traditional approaches and remodeling of the methods by applying the concepts of the Fuzzy Systems Theory. The prime purpose of the work is the proposition of a systematic method that supports design decision-making, allowing the consideration of qualitative and quantitative aspects. As a contribution of the research, the proposed method will be modeled for the specific use in high rise dwelling design. Construction Site Layout and Virtual Reality Coordinator: Eduardo Toledo Santos Collaborators: Ubiraci Espinelli Lemes de Souza This project aims to develop a computational tool for construction site planning based on Virtual Reality technology. Previous research has shown the impact of construction site layout design on productivity and on the construction cost. Although demanded by law, the site layout is not prepared as carefully and as early as needed and even less updated according to the real site evolution. Among the reasons for this behavior are the difficulty for creating and maintaining this document, usually prepared on site by the resident engineer. Motivated by this scenario, it was decided to create an innovative software that, without taking out the decision power of the engineer in charge, could help him to create and update the site layout. Some low cost technologies related to Virtual Reality were chosen to base the system development as a way to overcome the limitations of the traditional 2D layout for representing something so spatial and dynamic as is the construction site. The interaction in a 3D, realistic environment gives the user a privileged view of the available space for allocating materials, facilities, vehicles and equipment in the site. Coordinator: Sérgio Leal Ferreira Collaborator: Guilherme Kazuhisa Tanabe The Project goal is to contribute through data models, especially IFC model, to generate a building refurbishment design database. This database will be support, at the beginning, the design process management of social housing, in decision making and cost and economic analysis. The aim is to achieve a shared system of monitoring and controlling information evolution about the social housing build in design phase. Coordinator: Rovilson Mafalda The proportion of fine and coarse aggregates in concrete has great influence on the physical proprieties of the material and affects its resistance and durability. Although several studies showed this influence, there are almost no researches on the assessment of the porosity of the concrete based on the granulometric curves of the aggregates in Brazil. The aim of this research is to develop a mathematical model and a computational program to estimate porosity of the concrete based on its granulometric curves. The use of Simulation Tools on Integrated Building and Air Conditioning Systems Designs to Determine the Thermal Comfort Conditions and the Potential of Energy Savings Coordinator: Profª Drª Brenda Chaves Coelho Leite Collaborators: Viviane Caroline Abe, Thais Aya Hassan Inatomi Nowadays, one of the most aspects that influences on built environment quality is the air conditioning system. The system technology applied to acclimatize the environments is rapidly developing, but, a lack of information about the way this kind of system provides thermal comfort conditions still exists, especially the modern ones. Furthermore, how much its impact on energy consumption of the building is? If the architectural and air conditioning systems are designed on an integrated way, both thermal comfort conditions and energy consumption quantity can be provided by simulation process. This is a procedure that allows interventions for improvement and adaptation to the specific needs of each environment, in addition to minimize costs and rework. At the present, master researches are being in development focusing the related aspects and, as this theme is innovative, other issues can be investigated, mainly in doctoral researches. The installed laboratorial infrastructure counts on processing high capacity equipments and current software.
