Glocer * The 2001 awards were respectfully postponed until 2002 2 Chamber’s Annual Gala: A Rousing Success! w w w T he Person of the Year 2008 Awards Dinner on May 22nd at the Waldorf=Astoria Hotel will be remembered for a long time; it was the first time a Brazilian woman was so honored and it was also the first time that a “Nordestino”, a Northeastern Brazilian, received the award. The 37 past editions of the event have mostly alternated in electing Brazilian men from São Paulo, Rio or from other central or southern states. Many of our friends and members thought the choice of Yolanda Queiroz, CEO of the Edson Queiroz Group of Fortaleza, Ceará, amply justified and deserving as it was, would nevertheless result in much smaller attendance. Brazil is a large country and Ms. Yolanda is not well known beyond her native Northeast. In fact, teamed up with the very popular Thomas F. “Mack” McLarty, III, CEO of McLarty Associates, the two honorees drew a large and boisterous crowd, making the party one of the most memorable ones and adding to the long line of POY Galas that became “affairs to remember”. Ms. Yolanda brought thirty seven children and grand-children in her party and this great infusion of youth surely had a lot to do with the unprecedented popularity of the after-dinner reception and dance, which lasted until 1:30 AM. The dancing was energetic and the excellent band played everything from rock to “forró”, the popular dance from the “Nordeste”. Reaffirming a tradition, the President of Brazil, His Excellency Luis Inácio Lula da Silva, sent a personal letter to the honorees that was read by H.E. José Alfredo Graça Lima, Brazil’s Consul General in New York. The American Ambassador to Brazil delivered the award to Ms. Yolanda Queiroz and former Foreign Minister Luiz Felipe Lampreia did the same for Thomas F. “Mack” McLarty, III. The Dais could boast of one former President, H.E. José Sarney, now a Senator, two sitting governors and a vice-governor, ten Ambassadors and top executives of prominent Brazilian and American corporations. In the following pages we tried to capture as many of our members as came within sight of our photographers. If you are not there, there is always next year… 3 Thomas F. “Mack” McLarty, III 4 Yolanda Queiroz 5 Person of the Year Awards – The Head Table 6 In alphabetical order by last name: Richard S.
