An intermediate level of Portuguese is strongly recommended (to
understand and write), since all the classes of UFRGS are held in
Portuguese.

Health insurance
There are some fees (such as the one for foreigners from the Federal
Police) but we do not have any university fee, since UFRGS is a public
institution.

The first semester of UFRGS normally starts in the first week of March, and
finishes in mid July. The second semester normally starts in the first week
of August and finishes in mid December.

Usually, it is mandatory to contract a health insurance in order to obtain a
student visa. Please contact the Brazilian Consulate or Embassy for
detailed information.
Language Courses
UFRGS offers a Portuguese as a second language course for international
students with competitive prices. The applications of interested students
are received by Institute of Letters. For further information about the
Portuguese as a second language program at UFRGS, contact the program

Housing
UFRGS does not have student houses for international students, but
RELINTER offers support for these students, helping them to find adequate
housing. Ask for a list with options sending an e-mail to
[email protected]. RELINTER also offers a database with families
offering their houses to receive international students.
Around R$500 for renting an apartment, R$310 for eating, R$60 for
transportation + other living expenses.
It will be between R$1000 and R$1500 per month, average.

All the students from UFRGS, including the exchange students, have access
to any library of UFRGS and can have lunch and dinner for a really low
price (R$1,30), inside the university.
