Brazilcartoon even virtual is very real!
The site was born to value and divulgate everything concerning to humor drawing.
Initially we wanted that the world knew about the quality in Brazilian cartoons and about
the professionalism in competitions done in Brazil. We soon went beyond and spoke
about international cartoon. Today, all the information is divulgated for free.
The three companies: Mais Propaganda, audio producer and films producer owned by
my partner, Hindira Ruas, are the sponsors of the site. They are the ones that defray this
work, holding the needed professionals for the good performance in Brazilcartoon, and
the quality of the information. We do not depend on government's resources, this is a
private initiative. Really performing a fundamental role in art and culture dissemination in
Brazil.
One of the great difficulties faced by humor drawers is the restricted space in
communications ways. However, internet came to open doors offering opportunities for
expositions and cartoon's publications.
Brazilcartoon is a specialized site in humor drawings; therefore, we work to make easier
the communication about what happens in cartoon universe. Our mission is to support
humor drawing development. And this way, to entertain people, to promote critical sense,
to inform competitions and the results, to divulge professional cartoonists and to offer
opportunities to new talents.
Brazilcartoon publishes, daily, the Best day's Humor, but also offers space to those who
are not professionals yet. Our intention is to incentive and to stimulate new talents for
later, to be recognized and rewarded. All the great cartoonists began as amateurs and got
developing the techniques, improving the humor. We receive daily a huge number of emails and 20% of them are from amateur cartoonists. Usually the beginners search for
information to professionalize, books suggestions, courses indications, workshops and
lectures that may help their formation.
Our content is produced by you, cartoonists. The participation of everyone is the fuel that
the site needs to be in full activity. The return is in the number of daily accesses that,
statistically, only increases. This also benefits directly the cartoonists that participates
and collaborates with the site.
Only in this month 38745 visits came from 971 world cities. In Brazil, there are more than
1500 daily visitors with more than 46000 of this been monthly visits from 164 cities. Our
audience corresponds, been in majority to journalists, cartoonists, intellectuals,
students, educators, opinion formers in general. We also count with good partnership
such as Irancartoon, Syriacartoon, Fanofany, Tabriz, Comic's Blog, Grafar, among others
collaborators, in divulgation of the content in our site.
Brazilcartoon's team created the dynamic actualization system that is already in full
function. The system for been dynamic allows the cartoonists to publish their works
instantaneously by using a simple actualization process. It's important for the site and for
the participant cartoonists to know the opinion on the posted works. Therefore, who
judges drawing's quality are the internet users, classifying them as regular, good or
genius, without any interference by the Site. To integrate the dynamic actualization
system were built and commission that evaluates the technical capacity of those who
wishes to participate. Now, we created Brazilcartoonews, that not only divulgate what's
been published on the site, but will also focus on what's happening in Brazil informing the
cartoonists, journalists and the public that likes graphic humor about Brazilian
competitions, expositions, books. It is a fast and dynamic manner to communicate with
the world. Yeni Akrep, Kiks and IRANCARTOON Magazine were the inspiration for our
project. More news to come along the year.
“ It is important to deal with humor drawing seriously so we
can laugh a lot of this immortal art.”

No entanto, a internet veio abrir portas oferecendo
Nossa missão é apoiar o desenvolvimento do desenho de humor. E com isso, entreter

pessoas, propiciar senso crítico, informar mostras competitivas e seus resultados, divulgar
cartunistas profissionais e oferecer oportunidades a novos talentos.
posteriormente, serem reconhecidos e premiados.
O Yeni Akrep, Kiks e a revista

Brazilcartoon: Has been almost two decades since the creation of the
Contest that first happened in a residence, and today is the most
disputed Humor Contest in Brazil. Appeared in the end of the Military
Dictatorship, and passed by all the difficulties that any cultural project
goes by, how can you say that is seen the current edition, mainly in what
concerns to the law of incentive to the culture?
Ricky:Hey, wait a minute, I think you guys are confusing me... Didn’t
you guys want to interview the folks from Piracicaba? Or is it with the
Piauí Saloon? Well, I can’t remember which other was the humor
saloon that began in the bedroom of the organization staff, but it wasn’t
the carioca contest, that since the first edition happens in House of
Culture Laura Alvim, a museum in Ipanema Beach. Ah! I got it! Laura
Alvim’s House... residence... it’s all in the house anyway! And you guys
are not wrong, because Laura Alvim’s house was for many years the
residence where lived… Laura Alvim! A socialite from a rich family that
in the end of her life, for losing his fortune, opened her big house so the
beginner artists could maintain there their ateliers. When she past,
Darcy Ribeiro made a campaign to transform the place a cultural center
devoted to beginner artists. The center was inaugurated in 1988 with
the first edition of the Carioca Contest. The coolest thing about the
history is this: Laura was the granddaughter of Ângelo Agostinio, the
patriarch of Brazilian drawing. So the place has everything concerning
to the contest. So the event is completing 20 years now. What we have
as a cultural project represents very much time. And answering your
question: The main difficulty in the past 20 years wasn’t a financial
matter, but the fact that the Saloon is a event of the Culture Secretary of
the State, that is, subjulgated to the political fluctuations of the State.
Every time that a new governor went to the power, coming a new group
in Laura Alvim – or a change in the culture fold – the Saloon had to begin
from scratch and convince the people of the importance of a graphic
humor event. Two times the saloon did not happen and had an edition in
which the whole team worked for free and the awards were symbolical.
Happly, this time, the governor is Sérgio Cabral, that comes from a
family very close to drawing and humor and the new secretary, Adriana
Rattes, extended the proposal to the Contest and soon gave strength to
the event. To complete the circle, Lygia Marina, the new director named
to the house, made part of the first editions of the contest and so –
repeating what I said before – everything is in the house. Or on the
house. Now, in the financial aspect of course it is a difficulty. The
money to culture is very few and in the 15 editions that money came
from the State, the contest had to work hard. If by one hand we had a
comfortable sponsorship, by the other hand the budget was very tight.
From 2004 on, Eliana Caruso – coordinator before the event –
“privatized” the contest, trying to search sponsors in public and private
companies, and that completely changed not only the amount of money
but the very face of the event. Now that doesn’t means that in each
edition is needed to run after the sponsors, bring out interest, close
deals, and for that the laws of incentive to culture are essentiasl.
Brazilcartoon: A brand new blog of the contest was inaugurated,
where the cartoonists can change information and see the last news.
Do you believe that this means a growth in the number of participants of
the contest? How the participations are going this year?
Ricky: The big new to this old contest in the incorporation of the internet
on the event. We made a site with Funarj, that helps a lot in the
divulgation and made possible the virtual registrations. In june a virtual
gallery goes on line, what can increase the contest’s audience,
including internationally, and where the internet users can vote for their
favorite drawings. Now, what I’m really enjoying is the blog, with it’s
daily atualizations, the backstage news or the partial results, letting the
participants to have a better avaliation of their works. It’s a dual thing. It
w w w . b r a z i l c a r t o o n . c o m
5
is the first time that a humor contest opens this direct channel for the
artists to participate with comments, posts, suggestions, critics and
debating some subjects that I’ve been bringing. So I think that the
participations this year are more… Participative!
Brazilcartoon: And about the quality of the received works, what’s your
opinion? Is it harder for the jury this year?
Ricky: This year – for we have very few time – we made a divulgation
concentrated in virtual communication systems, sending e-mails, calling
artists registrated and searching partners with specialized sites and
blogs so they could answer the news of the contest
I think we nailed more on the public than in the drawers themselves,
because there were a level of quality of the higher ones in the past years.
Many unknown artists – besides the names that always participate –
and, what’s interesting, many registrations from interior cities, away
from the humor center production areas. The harder category, each
year, have been caricature, but I was happy to see that in this contests,
for me, the greatest things are in cartoons. Of course, the caricatures
continue excellent, but the cartoons – even for the little space of none
existing In press – have been low. I imagine that the juror will find very
difficult to come to the rewarded cartoons.
Brazilcartoon: Last year, the 18th edition of the contest, a homage took
place for Ziraldo. Who follows him in the hall of homaged this year?
Ricky: With all the political changes that i early mentioned and until the
new directory takes posse and get the things going, there was a short
time to organize the Contest and even lesser to run after sponsors. The
House Laura Alvim then decided to make an event smaller, but at the
same time focused on the contest, that is the most important part of the
event. There will be no homaged artist neither great retrospective
expositions. In one way, the artists that prestige our contest will be the
homaged ones.
Brazilcartoon: From whom was the concept of the new logo of the
contest that illustrates Ipanema’s sidewalk? Why this change?
Ricky: The Contest Logo was created by Gambá Jr., a guy that is a
mixture of a designer, art teacher, acrobat and child’s book author.
Usually, the image of each edition is a recreation by the homaged artist
or by the visual producer over Laura Alvim’s symbol, a little angel in heap
of a lion. But there were years that we did different things. Gamba
himself cutted in to pieces an idea that he had for the 14th contest, and
that was Ipanema’s sidewalk smiling. Now we have the designer Renata
Figueiredo, that is creating on Gamba’s concept new visual marks for
the opening of the event.
Brazilcartoon: To finish, what are your impressions on Brazilcartoon?
Ricky: It was in the opening of last year’s event, when Leite came to Rio,
that he told me about his plans to open a big site on humor that
veinculates the brazilian drawing all over the world and could be a info
central of what happens in drawing everywhere. By the way, Leite
crushed 18th contest, and was the star of the event, Ziraldo went nuts for
his vanguardian caricatures of this Mineiro. I thought it was a too much
bold of him to think a site like this, that is huge, but a year later it’s going
very well, and has and enormous importance, became – as long as we
used a lot the word house in this interview – Brazilian drawer’s house on
the Internet. The entire team from Brazilcartoon deserves
congratulations! And thanks for divulgating that much the Carioca
Contest in this space.

illustrated very nicely the though reality of the
region close to his country. A volcano almost
exploding. Brazil had the second place. The
cartoonist Márcio Leite, Brazilcartoon’s director,
illustrates a powerful gun which trigger is flag from
Palestine. The thermometer showing the high
temperature of the conflict on Gaza is Liusvia’s
work, from Indonesia, who won the third place.
The pitiful state in Gaza was well represented by
the artists from the whole world.

Leite's weapon is humor
Cinara Dreide Jornalist
O bom humor é a arma do Leite
Em um mundo de conflitos
constantes onde as questões
são resolvidas por meio de
violência verbal e/ou armada, o
cartum é uma poderosa arma
contra a opressão e tem um
papel libertador, onde mostra
muitas vezes uma realidade de
um ângulo que ainda não foi
visto. Brinca, satiriza e critica o
mundo.
Os salões de humor são
espaços onde borbulham
criatividade e temas variados,
a maioria deles com o
compromisso de gritar que “O
Rei está nú”. Estes eventos são
importantes para o mundo. É
uma enorme concentração de
criatividade por metro
quadrado. Quem já teve
oportunidade de ir a uma
exposição de cartuns deve ter
saído de lá diferente, um ser
humano mais atento a
questões tão óbvias que
muitas vezes não damos
importância.
Recentemente, o Salão
Carioca de Humor, anunciou
seu resultado e o cartunista
Leite foi um dos premiados ,
ganhando duas menções
honrosas nas categorias
caricatura com “Manson” e
cartum com a “ Cara do Riso”,
mais o prêmio catálogo com a
caricatura do arquiteto
“Niemeyer”.
Esta é sua
segunda participação no Salão
Carioca, ambas com vitória. No
ano passado, O “Leite ferveu” e
transbordou criatividade
faturando o primeiro lugar com
a caricatura de Hugo Chaves e
o segundo, na categoria
quadrinhos. Também foi
finalista com as caricaturas
“Santos Dumont” e “Fidel
Castro”.
Após o Carioca, mais um
prêmio: segundo lugar no
Concurso Internacional de
Cartum Gaza / Irã, com um
cartum que aborda a violência
contra o povo palestino. Ele foi o
único brasileiro premiado no
concurso ao lado de artistas
que vivenciam esta dura
realidade de opressão e
violência contra o povo de
Gaza, como o primeiro
colocado, Saeed Sadeghi que é

desenhar para um mundo
melhor. O humor tem o poder de
aliviar as dores. O riso faz bem à
saúde e não tem contraindicação. E mesmo se tratando
de questões sérias como o
tema “GAZA”, o cartum permite
além do riso o exercício de
pesquisa e reflexão de quem

O resultado do Concurso

In a world with constant conflicts
where the issues are solved by armed
or verbal violence, the cartoon is a
powerful weapon against oppression
and has a liberator role, where shows
many times a reality from an unseen
angle. It jokes, satirizes and critiques
the world.
The humor contests are spaces
where creativity bubbles in a variety of
themes, the great majority with the
compromise to scream “the king is
naked!”. These events are important
to the world. It is a huge concentration
of creativity by square foot. Who
already had the opportunity to go to a
cartoon exposition must have left it
different, a human being more aware
to the obvious and important issues
that many times don't matter to us.
Recently, the Carioca Humor
Contest, has announced it's result
and the cartoonist Leite was one of
the rewarded, winning two honor
mention on the categories caricature
with “Manson” and cartoon with “Cara
do Riso”, plus the catalog prize with
the caricature of the architect
“Niemeyer”. This is his second
participation on the Carioca Contest,
both with victories. Last year “Milk
boiled” and it overflew with creativity
winning the first place with Hugo
Chaves' caricature and second place,
in the category Comics. He
was also a finalist with the
caricatures “Santos
Dumont” and “Fidel
Castro”. After the
Carioca, one
more prize:
the second
place in the
Internation
al Cartoon
Contest tt
Gaza/ Iran, with
a cartoon that's
about violence
against Palestine
people. He was the
single brazilian
rewarded in the
contest, side by side
to artists that live this
tough reality of
oppression and
violence against the
people in Gaza, as the first
place, Saeed Sadeghi who is
a Iranian.

this big: “I feel that besides the

the most important thing is to
draw to a better world. Humor
has the power to alleviate the
pain. Laughter is good for your
health too. And there's no side
effects. And even with serious
issues such as in the theme
“GAZA”, cartoon allow us
besides laughter an exercise
of reflection and research,
both from the drawer as from
who observes it in an
exposition”. The result of the

INTERVIEW ENTREVISTA
Brazilcartoon: Do agree with the idea that it is better to have a regular
drawing portraying a great idea than having a wonderful drawing but
empty?
Raed: I think that the artistic work requires maintaining a difficult equation
between the depth of the idea and the strength of the line, which is an
important issue in caricatures, we cannot- for instance- discuss the idea on
the expense of the look or vice versa. In the caricature, there are factors of
the success for the artistic work, in case any of them was ignored, the
caricature shall grow weak and it shall not reach the receiver.
Brazilcartoon: The cartoonists that use surrealism in their drawings have
more chances to be selected in a humor contest?
Raed: I think that surrealism in caricature has something to do with the deep
philosophical dimension, which is a matter out of place and time, and this makes
the viewer live in another world through provoking his mind and through provoking it,
this kind of caricature gains the cognitive outcome, choosing such paintings in the
contests is relative, what I am concerned with is the influence in me a receiver.
Brazilcartoon: What is your opinion on the Brazilian Humor drawings?
Raed: The Brazilian artists have different styles, and this is a significant merit, I think
that the festivals held in Brazil had influenced significantly in the process that the
Brazilian artist witnesses, there are a lot of styles but the take the marvelous
angles.
Brazilcartoon: How do you like the works of the 4th Syria
International Cartoon Contest 2008?
Raed: The works that participate in a Syrian international contest
are submitted to the main issue needed from the artists, we take a
vigilant eye to the artistic trends regardless the identity of the artist,
then, the selection is done according to the importance of the subject and
the impression , which is the precision of the subject, and we do not exclude
the paintings that take the philosophical side into consideration, without
concentrating on the laughter-causing portraits in necessity.
Brazilcartoon: Organizing an exhibition of this level is, for sure, a hard work
and this is the 4th edition. What is the secret to make such event last long?
Raed: The continuation of the Syrian International Fair is related to
authenticity and neutral in the first regard, and then our love to others, and
these are the main factors in going on, for love only is not enough, but with the
honest work and the good relations with everyone regardless their race or
nationality.
Brazilcartoon: You were one of the jurors of the 1st international Humor
Exhibition for the Amazon Forest, what were your criteria to choose the winner?
Raed: First, I read the work from different angles, then I make an adjustment with the
issue, and then I discuss the match between the form and content, and the rate of
influence. That was just the beginning, then I compare the works with each other to
determine which is the best, this is a hard task that some might see unfair, but it is a matter
of opinions, for instance: the work that wins in Brazil may not win in Syria and so forth.
Brazilcartoon: Some jurors pay more attention to the idea of the drawing than the work itself.
How did you choose the works for the 4th Syria International Cartoon Contest 2008, since it
consisted of these two distinct phases? What methods did the jurors use in both phases?
Raed: As I said: choosing the works is the hardest part for it may be seen as unfair for some works,
this is the competence of the panel of choosing the works in the prior selecting, the panel sees all the
works to be sorted according to the standard of importance to three parts, the first is for competition,
the second for the exhibition, and the third is out of the contest.
Brazilcartoon: Being a good juror depends on discipline, experience and a critical view. How did you
choose the jury?
Raed: As for selecting the panel, it is made on three criterion: 1: the international reputation of the
artist2- the high technique of drawing he uses3- the idea he provides to the receiver in all stages, I mean
here the intelligence of the artist. Based on these criterion, the members of the panel are chosen , to
enrich the festival he participates in.
Brazilcartoon: In your final considerations, we would like you to talk about what brazilcartoon website
represents for the humor drawings.
Raed: BrazilCartoon site is one of the important sites, I think it resembles a vital shift in the history of the
Brazilian and international cartoon history, this is what I have seen by the visitors, in addition to show the
news in a beautiful and attractive manner.Thank you for this interview, I wish you all the best and peace.

The Drawings of the young iranian
cartoonist Mohammad Ali Khalaji
have been motivating quarrels
about the capacity of the
organization staff in cartoon events.
In note published on the site
http://www.irancartoon.com/ signed
by Massoud, director of the site,
says about the constant occurrence
of similarities on Mohammad Ali
Khalaji’s works.
According to
Massoud, Khalaji’s attitude puts in
doubt the very quality of the
cartoonists in middle-east. The
situation is creating a debate not
only among Iranians artists, the
main prejudiced, but, in all worlds’
community. Rahim Baggal Asghari
suggested in note the creation of a
Cartoon International Expert
Committee to discuss
themes that matters to
cartoon and send the
points of view to
d r a w i n g c o n t e s t ’s
organization entities.
He invited important
p r o f e s s i o n a l
cartoonists’ names
such as the Romanian
Julian Pena-Pai,
Iranian Masoud
Shojai, the Turkish
Erdogan Karayel, the Brazilian and
director of Brazilcartoon Márcio
Leite, and the Australian Louise
Postruzin. We heard Márcio Leite
about this subject, and he related
that when we were a juror on a
brazilian contest in 2007, he stood in
front of a cartoon made by Khalaji.
According to him, the idea wasn’t
new. “I identified and denounced the
similarity on Khalaji’s cartoon with
several other works that
approached to the same idea.
Before the publication of the official
result, I searched on the internet for
the drawings that was similar to the
idea used on Khalaji’s cartoon,
showed to the jury and organization
staff, and even so, my opinion was
not sufficient to disqualify him. And
he became the winner on the
category Cartoon”, says Leite. We,
from Brazilcartoon, especially Leite,
are happy to know about the
Cartoon International Expert
Committee’s creation initiative. “I
thank for mentioning my name as
one of the possible integrant of the
committee. I’m available to
contribute in an effective way to
cartoon’s value and quality. I wish
that Brazilcartoon may also help the
divulgation of the info to diminish the
similarities in results”, ends
Brazilcartoon’s director.
Os desenhos do jovem cartunista
iraniano Mohammad Ali Khalaji têm
colocado em discussão a
capacidade dos organizadores e
jurados em eventos de cartum. Em
nota publicada no site
www.irancartoon.com e assinada
pelo Massoud, diretor do site, fala
sobre a constante ocorrência de
similaridade nos trabalhos de
Mohammad Ali Khalaji. Segundo o
Massoud, a atitude de Khalaji está
colocando em dúvida a própria
qualidade dos cartunistas do oriente
médio. A situação está gerando um
debate não apenas entre os artistas
iranianos, os principais
prejudicados, mas, em toda a
comunidade mundial.
Rahim
Baggal Asghari sugeriu em nota a
criação de um Comitê Internacional
de Especialistas em Cartum para
discutir temas que
dizem respeito ao
cartum e enviar
pareceres para as
s
entidades
organizadoras dos
salões e competições
de humor. Convidou
importantes nomes de
cartunistas profissionais
como do romeno Julian
Pena-Pai, do iraniano
Masoud Shojai, do turco
Erdogan Karayel, do brasileiro e
diretor do Brazilcartoon Márcio Leite
e da australiana Louise Postruzin.
Ouvimos Márcio Leite sobre este
assunto e ele nos relatou que
quando foi jurado em um salão
brasileiro em 2007, se deparou com
um cartum feito por Khalaji. Segundo
ele, a idéia do desenho não era
inédita. “Identifiquei e denunciei a
similaridade do cartum de Khalaji
com várias outras obras que
abordaram a mesma idéia. Antes de
ser divulgado o resultado oficial,
procurei na internet os desenhos que
eram semelhantes à idéia abordada
pelo cartum de Khalaji, mostrei para
os jurados e organizadores e,
mesmo assim, minha opinião não foi
suficiente para desclassificá-lo. E ele
acabou sendo vencedor na
categoria cartum”, conta Leite. Nós
do Brazilcartoon, e em particular o
Leite, ficamos felizes em saber da
iniciativa da criação do Comitê
Internacional de Especialistas em
Cartum. “Agradeço por meu nome
ter sido citado como um dos
possíveis integrantes do comitê. E
estou disposto a contribuir de forma
efetiva para a valorização e
qualidade do cartum. Desejo que o
Brazilcartooon também possa ajudar
na divulgação das informações para
diminuir a similaridade nos
resultados”, finaliza o diretor do
Brazilcartoon.

to establish mutual exhibitions of
artworks of Iranian and Brazilian
cartoonists in both our countries,
we will seriously persist on this subject.
We are so glad that the site of Iran
cartoon in internet world stays by the
side of great Brazilcartoon site and has
a special place in the world of internet,
and this makes our friendship and
cooperation much stronger.
In my opinion the First International
humor Exhibition for the Amazon Forest
was a great challenge in the world of
International cartoon and attention about
the world environmental problem is one
the most important subjects.
Two great Brazilian Cartoonists Mr.
Amorim and Mr. Baptistao were our
guests in Iran as the jurors in Tehran
International Biennial Cartoon Contests
and surely we will invite more artists of
your country for different ceremonies
such as being jurors of the biennials.

Prezado Márcio e queridos
cartunistas brasileiros
Muito obrigado por sua sincera
atenção em enviar-me este grande
livro do famoso fotógrafo brasileiro,
Araquem Alcântra. Na minha
opinião, esta é uma das melhores
coleções de fotos que eu já recebi.
Eu tenho uma forte amizade por
você e com os grandes cartunistas
de seu país. Estou muito feliz por
essa amizade crescer cada dia
mais aumentando assim,nossas
relações no futuro. Esse precioso
livro contendo trabalhos de
cartunistas latino americanos foi
recebido ontem juntamente com
seus presentes. Seu embaixador já
se prontificou a organizar exibições
mútuas de trabalhos de arte dos
cartunistas brasileiros e iranianos
nos dois países e nós estamos
engajados na realização desse
evento. Estamos muito felizes pelo
fato do site do irancartoon estar ao
lado do grande site Brazilcartoon
no mundo da internet, pois isso
torna a nossa amizade e a nossa
cooperação mais forte. Na minha
opinião, o 1º Salão Internacional de
Humor pela Floresta Amazônica foi
um grande desafio para o mundo
do cartum, pois atraiu a atenção
para um dos mais sérios problemas
ambientais. Dois grandes
cartunistas brasileiros, Amorim e
Baptistão são nossos convidados
como jurados no Concurso
Internacional Bienal de Cartuns de
Teerã e, certamente, nós
convidaremos mais artistas do seu
país para diferentes cerimônias tais
como jurados de bienais.
Brazilcartoon não existe há muito
tempo, mas já é um dos sites de
cartuns mais profissionais do
mundo e por isso eu te parabenizo.
Muito obrigado pela sua atenção
para comigo como um
representante dos cartunistas
iranianos. Pode contar comigo para
o crescimento de nossas relações.
Muito obrigado pelo apoio e pelos
precisos presentes.
Atenciosamente,
Com muita admiração pelo seu
