This exhibition of the works of Marcos Cardoso does justice to the independent road
he has traveled on since the 1990s with enormous poetic coherence and aesthetic
force. His dialogue with popular culture is done within the creative process, never as
a citation or visual reference. Having been partially formed
samba schools, his works embodies an inventive artisanship, which transforms
His constructive patience is a poetic trait, almost a spiritual mark. His meticulous
processes give disposable materials an almost austere form that seduces the eye.
This ability to recreate plastic from what is commonplace is the fruit of a typically
popular intelligence found among the cariocas, as the inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro
are known. There is also a very distinctive humor to his work that combines levity
and fragility.
His obsession with materials, – cigarette butts, matchsticks, sandal straps – is not

reinvention of reality. An ethical lesson at a time of obsolescence and exaggerated
consumption.
