Micro-Scale Abrasion Tester; Ball Cratering
Rotation of a ball against a plate in the presence of an abrasive slurry results in
the production of a circular depression.
In the case of coated plates, if the coating is worn through,
a “bulls-eye” depression is observed.
Measurements of the inner and outer diameters of this “bullseye” are easily made and provide an accurate and low cost
method of determining coating thickness.
It is possible to determine the wear coefficient of hard and soft
coatings and monolithic materials by abrasive wear in a ball on
plate contact configuration.

Reciprocating Tribometer
The block-on-block reciprocating tribometer was designed to
simulate the ring and liner contact in engines.
It is used to test materials in sliding reciprocating motion:
ranges of load - 10 to 260N and frequency - up to 10 Hz.
Four tables in rectilinear alternative motion
(2x30mm fixed course) support the liner blocks.
The upper specimens (ring blocks) are pressed by dead
weights against the liners and transmit the friction force
to a load cell.

Block-On-Cylinder Tribometer
The block-on-cylinder tribometer is used to test materials in sliding contact:
wide ranges of load (70 to 1200N), speed and lubrication
regime.
A rotating steel cylinder (φ = 120) slides against a testing
block, in dry condition or using deep feed lubrication.
Typical applications of the block-on-cylinder machine are
similar to other conventional tribometers:
fundamental wear studies;
friction and wear testing (metals, ceramics, soft
and hard coatings, polymers and composites);
bearing materials wear test;
wear screening tests for continuous sliding mechanical components.

TAN (Total Acid Number - ASTM D974-97)
The determination of the acid number (TAN) by colorimetric
titration can be used as a measure of lubricant degradation.
Unidade de Tribologia, Vibrações
e Manutenção Industrial
Total Acid Number measures the total acid concentration
in the oil.
As the oil ages and oxidizes, small amounts of acid byproducts are formed in the oil causing the AN to increase.
The degree to which AN has increased over the new oil’s
baseline is an indication of the extent to which the oil has
degraded.
A high TAN typically indicates that the useful life of the
oil has expired and it needs to be changed.

Flash and Fire Points (ASTM D 92 – 98a)
The flash point measures the tendency of the oil to form a
flammable mixture with air under controlled laboratory conditions.
Unidade de Tribologia, Vibrações

The flash point is the lowest liquid temperature at which application of the test
flame causes the vapors of the test specimen of the sample to ignite.
Flash point can indicate the possible presence of
highly volatile and flammable materials.
For example, an abnormally low flash point on an
engine oil can indicate gasoline contamination.

Ferrography
Ferrography is a rapidly expanding technology of wear particle
analysis:
Unidade de Tribologia, Vibrações

It is a diagnostic and predictive technique;
Offers a convenient means of accurately evaluating the condition of
interacting lubricated components without shutdown.
Types of Ferrography tests:
Direct Reading Ferrograph (DRIII) and Analytical Ferrograph (FM III)
When DR Ferrography reveals a pronounced increase in the particle density and
severity of wear index, an Analytical Ferrogram should be made to determine
specifically what type of wear is occurring and to provide the basis from which a
decision can be made whether to overhaul or continue operation.

Direct Reading Ferrograph (DRIII)

Unidade de Tribologia, Vibrações

The DR Ferrograph magnetically precipitates
the wear particles from a sample;
Provides digital readings of the quantity of
both large (> 5 µm) and small (< 5µm) particles;
These numerical readings and their relative
values provide a reliable basis for assessing the degree of wear occurring in

Analytical Ferrography (FM III)
The Analytical Ferrograph is used to prepare a Ferrogram

Unidade de Tribologia, Vibrações

Wear particles suspended in an oil sample are
magnetically precipitated into a thin glass slide,

The microscopic analysis of the Ferrogram

It also provides specific identification of wear mechanisms and individual parts

Dialysis Method
(Soap and Mineral Oil Fraction in Lubricating Greases – DIN 51 814)
Quantify the fraction of mineral oil and soap in lubricating greases.
As the grease reaches the end of its useful life,

Grease loses oil due to the combined action of
bleeding, oxidation and evaporation.
When half of the initial oil content in the grease structure is
lost the grease is considered to be in the end of its useful
life (approximately).
