From November 25 to 28, 2013, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, COEP/Brasil and the Carleton
Centre for Community Innovation (Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada) will host the First
International Forum of Better Futures: A Network on Communities, Universities, Livelihoods
and Citizenship.
Program of the Forum
The Forum will begin with a public welcome and launch at COPPE, the graduate faculty of
engineering of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and one of the organizing partners of
the network.
Contributions by participants will generate the content of the Forum. We will have:
1) Two days of learning and exchange about co-operation and joint action among
communities, universities, research organizations and their allies. Case studies will
provoke our thinking and conversations in these two days. Themes and issues include
big questions of development confronting both North and South:

Livelihoods – productive work and a living income;
A new generation of community leaders—young women and men;
Climate change; healthy environments, with food and water security;
Citizens’ human, civil and social rights; and
Ending violence against women and all forms of discrimination.
These two days will be open to interested people and organizations of the Brazilian
public.
2) A day-plus on the development of the network: We will be seeking buy-in on a working
proposal for the program of the network, its management and governance, and budget.
This part of the agenda will be restricted to people and organizations who have declared
their interest in becoming members of the network.
We are planning two options for the Forum, according to the resources available. Our
preferred version will have 80 to 100 participants; the minimum, up to 25.
Participants should plan to pay their own travel costs. We will keep you informed
about the funding of the Forum: participation will have to be largely self-financed.

Registration will be open from July 2 to Sept. 30, 2013.
Next steps:
We will be in touch again in the next few weeks, with an Update on:
• Registration and the draft program of the Forum;
• Our thinking about the content and shape of the network;
• Resourcing the Forum and the Network in 2013/14 and beyond.

Mobilização Social – e o Centro para Inovação Comunitária da Universidade de Carleton, do

Canadá, realizarão o I Fórum Internacional, Por um futuro melhor: uma Rede de
Comunidades, Universidades e Cidadania.
O programa do Fórum
Dia 25 de Novembro: Sessão pública de lançamento do Fórum, na sede da COPPE –
Instituto Alberto Luiz Coimbra de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa de Engenharia no Rio de
Janeiro.
Dias 26 e 27 de Novembro:
Objetivo: Troca de experiências, por meio da apresentação de estudos de casos pelos
membros da rede, sobre cooperação e ação conjunta entre as comunidades,
universidades, organizações de pesquisa e seus parceiros. Organizações e/ou individuos,
mesmo que não sejam membros da rede, poderão participar.
Temas:
• Geração de trabalho e renda;
• Juventude e liderança comunitária;
• Mudanças climáticas, ambientes saudáveis, segurança alimentar e água;

• Direitos humanos, civis e sociais;
• Eliminação da violência contra as mulheres e de todas as formas de discriminação.
Dia 28 de Novembro: Discussão sobre a organização e implementação da rede, sua gestão,
governança e orçamento, voltada para aqueles que serão membros da Rede de
Comunidades, Universidades e Cidadania.
Os participantes devem planejar cobrir suas próprias despesas de viagem.
Inscrições: 2 de Julnho a 30 de Setembro de 2013.
