PRESENTATION
The Department of Public Information (DPI) of the United Nations manages the News Center and is responsible for organizing the press coverage of Rio+20. It defines the coverage
of each event, the presence of journalists in areas of restricted access and the scheduling
of meeting rooms for press conferences.

The Press Coordination of the Brazilian Commission of Rio+20 works under the direction of Secretariat of Social Communications of the Presidency of the Republic,
and is responsible for the press advisory of Brazil’s Presidency and of the Brazilian
delegation. The Press Coordination also provides logistical support to the DPI in the
execution of its functions.

The DPI is also responsible for the accreditation of the press.
The press credentials applied for until May 14 and granted by the UN can be picked up in
person at Pavilion 1 of Riocentro, by presenting an identification document with photo.

The use of the press credential is mandatory for all days at Riocentro. At Parque
dos Atletas, it will be mandatory only during
the high-level segment of the Conference
(June 20, 21 and 22). A previous registration may be demanded for specific events.

Access to the events
The press credential guarantees free access to Pavilions 1 and 2, and to the area of Pavilion
3 that will be destined to the press. Access to the other areas of Riocentro depends on the
authorization and accompaniment of UN employees.
Accreditation of vehicles and parking lots
The deadline for the accreditation of vehicles was May 31. The approved credentials are available at the Coordination of Transportation of the Brazilian Committee of Rio+20 at Palácio Itamaraty (Av. Marechal Floriano, n° 196 – Centro, Rio de Janeiro).
Each journalism company can only request the accreditation of four cars, including eventual
Mobile Journalism Units (UMJs). The companies that have requested the accreditation of more
than four automobiles must indicate as soon as possible which vehicles will be effectively accredited. The confirmation must be sent to the e-mail:

There is a system of reception for journalists at the Guarulhos airport in São Paulo,
and at the airport of Galeão, in Rio de Janeiro.

PRESS ROOMS
All spaces under the responsibility of the CNO Rio+20 will have press rooms: Riocentro,
Parque dos Atletas, Arena da Barra and Pier Mauá. The open hours and other available
facilities are described in the sections about these spaces.
Press Room at Riocentro
The Press Center will be open at Pavilion 3 of Riocentro, from June 13 to 22, and

Transmissions of the UN TV;
Transmission of Brazilian and worldwide news channels;
Wireless ear phones for following on the transmissions of the UN TV in several
languages, and of the audio of the news channels;
Technical Central of Signal Distribution (see below)
Two rooms for press conferences, with capacity for 450 and 90 persons,
respectively.
Simultaneous transmissions
The open meetings of the official program will be transmitted in the original language, in
English, Portuguese and French through the UN TV in its website, http://webtv.un.org, and
through large screens that will be set up at the Press Center of Riocentro.
TV and audio signals
A Technical Central of Signal Distribution (CTDS) will be in operation at the Press Center
of Riocentro (see below). The Central has the capacity to provide signal in the HD, SD and
analog formats for up to 120 channels simultaneously. A parking lot near Pavilion 3 has been
reserved for the Mobile Journalism Units.

The signals of audio and video will be re-transmitted to counters at the Press Center
with plugs of the XLR type for audio, and HD-SDI for video. The audio signal will be
available in the original language, in Portuguese and in the five official languages of
the UN. Each counter will have 32 outlets of video and 64 audio outlets.

This venue receives the event ‘Cultura Rio+20’, organized by the Ministry of Culture. The
program includes seminars, music presentations, exhibits, workshops, audiovisual exhibitions and gastronomy
TOTEMS
Rio+20 counts with 161 electronic totems distributed at the areas of the events, hotels and
airports. They include the complete agenda of the official and parallel activities of Rio+20,
with information in Portuguese, English and Spanish on transportations and a guide with
suggestions of food options and accommodations in Rio de Janeiro. The consulted information can be sent to smartphones and tablets.
“Tablets” for persons with disabilities are available at the totem points.

TRANSPORTATION
Due to the unavailability of parking spots at many of the Rio+20 venues, especially in Barra
da Tijuca, the use of cars is strongly discouraged. The participants of Rio+20 count with the
following options of transportation:

A bus system for accredited persons will be connecting the many Rio+20 venues. It is
necessary to present the credential or the e-mail of confirmation of the accreditation in order
to have access to the buses.

b) Subway and conventional bus lines
The city of Rio de Janeiro has a broad network of public transportation. The ‘Metrô Rio’ subway lines operate Monday to Saturdays, from 5am to midnight, and on Sundays and holidays from 7am to 11pm. Most bus lines operate nonstop, but services may be significantly

The City Hall of Rio de Janeiro has a special line to RiocentroAthletes’ Park and Barra
Arena, leaving from the Rio Sul shopping centerand stopping at the Cardeal Arcoverde and
