sector público y especialmente del campo de la I+D.
3 - ESTE CAMPUS SE PROPONE SER EL EJE QUE VA A DINAMIZAR LA REGIÓN
Y RENTABILIZAR LOS RECURSOS NATURALES, ¿CUÁLES SON LAS EXPECTATIVAS?
La expectativa principal es convertir el Campus de
Ourense y por tanto a la Universidad de Vigo en un referente
científico de excelencia en el ámbito del agua en sus múltiples
áreas de conocimiento. Queremos que el Campus del Agua
consiga fomentar una actividad docente, investigadora y de
transferencia de excelencia en el ámbito de la gestión integral y
el aprovechamiento de recursos hídricos a través de la creación
en Ourense de un ecosistema que facilite el intercambio de
conocimiento y la competitividad de la provincia.
4 - ¿CUÁL ES EL PAPEL DE LA UTAD COMO COLABORADORA ESTRATÉGICA EN ESTE
PROYECTO, ¿ESTÁ PREVISTO AMPLIAR ESTA COLABORACIÓN A OTRAS ÁREAS?
Las universidades de Vigo y de Trás-

acuerdo sólo fue el punto de partida para una colaboración

del Agua. Nuestro objetivo común es fomentar acciones
que incentiven la especialización de las universidades de la
Macrorregión de Regiones del Sudoeste Europeo, teniendo
presente en este caso la importancia del agua en la economía,
en la sociedad y en la cultura de este espacio.

1 - WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF BUILDING THE CAMPUS DEL AGUA?
The Campus del Agua (Water Campus) will lend its own
personality and scientific identity to Vigo University’s Ourense
Campus through the creation of a highly visible project and the
creation of economic and social value around it and based on
the theme of water. The project set out to be a differentiating
and distinctive landmark for the Ourense Campus and
the “umbrella” that shelters all the assets of this campus,
comprising around 4,595 students, 33 curricula, 49 research
groups, 339 researchers and more than 120 R&D projects.2 2 HOW WILL THE CAMPUS DEL AGUA WORK?
The Campus del Agua will operate as a multidisciplinary
network comprising research, teaching and knowledge
transfer units. To achieve this, the project will have five areas
of collaboration which will gradually be structured and which
will bring together the know-how of the Ourense Campus
and which will form its future R&D clusters. We are talking
about the areas of Tourism, Computer Technology, Social
and Educative Innovation, the Environment and Alimentation.
In order to operate successfully, the project will embrace
strategic partners from the corporate sector, from the public
and companies and institutions. In December we signed an
agreement in Ourense between both academic institutions
to, within the framework of the Campus del Agua project,
develop areas of joint teaching, research, knowledge transfer
and internationalization work. Among other issues, we want to
stimulate the mobility of students, teachers and researchers;
interuniversity education and an entrepreneurial culture,
greater external projection and mainly the presentation of joint
research projects that can secure European funds. The signing
of this agreement was only the starting point of a collaboration
that will continually develop and grow in the future as Campus
del Agua project itself develops. Our common objective is
to foment actions that encourage the specialization of the
universities of the Macro-region of South West Europe, bearing
in mind, in this case, the importance of water for the economy,
in society and in the culture of this geographical space.
5 – HOW WILL THE CAMPUS DEL AGUA FIT IN WITH THE EUROPE 2020 STRATEGY?
The Campus del Agua project is designed in line with the
priorities of Horizon 2020, the leading community research and
innovation framework program 2014-2020, as it drives towards
excellence in research and connection with the economic
sectors through the transfer of technology and knowledge. Our
objective is to structure sufficient critical mass to allow us to
present joint research projects with our strategic allies such
as the UTAD, which can secure European funds for the macroregion, funds mainly from the framework program 2014-2020

1.What is EUNIS?
The European University Information Systems (EUNIS) is
an Association of around 150 European Universities, promoting
activities related with information systems for research and
higher education. EUNIS’ various activities can be classified
into three groups: the promotion of cooperation, sharing and
debate between people responsible for information systems
in higher education institutions and/or research institutions
in Europe; discussion with the main suppliers of information
systems, presenting them with the Universities’ points of
view; relations with the supervisory organizations, in charge
of information systems in higher education and research

2. Among the various partners what is the UTAD’s role?
The UTAD coordinates a project that aims to promote
the network which is financed by the QREN and also has
the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança and the NERBA and
NERVIR business associations as promoters. In this context,
the UTAD has been heading up this project to promote the
network, performing communication initiatives, empowering
the diffusion of knowledge. In this area, the modern University
has to be looked on as an entrepreneurial ecosystem, involving
the promotion of entrepreneurial initiatives and projects in the
academic community and stimulating the modernization and
adaptation of the actors who promote knowledge to the needs
of society, essential factors for the success of the economy.
This
strategy
requires
training
in
the
area
of
entrepreneurship and business management, in areas such
as the formal constitution of a company, coaching of the
businessmen and women in the first years of operation,
support for business cooperation and internationalization, as
well as the implementation of management support systems.
On the other hand, it has to make services available which
support the maturing of ideas, the elaboration of the business
plan and in risk analysis. This new dimension of the university
should be fomented in order to create spin-offs and start-ups,
in a strategy articulated with the future structures of the Regia
Douro Park to cater to science and technology, as part of the

Under the motto “Summer (You will See), the UTAD is
Yours”, the University for younger students aims to help
students who want to get into higher education with the choice
of a study area. The program included a wide range of scientific,
pedagogical, fun and cultural activities developed in a university
environment, allowing the youngsters the opportunity to
socialise with colleagues from different geographic regions in
a fun context. This initiative helped to give the opportunity to
young people to get a better idea of academic life, to expand
their knowledge, to develop competences and to gain a liking
for higher education.
2. What was the outcome of the 2012 edition?
The outcome was very positive, with all places filled and
the level of satisfaction of the participants was good. Another
relevant aspect was the involvement of young entrepreneurs
who had been students of the UTAD and who set up their own
companies in the area of the performing arts, communication
and multimedia and who have been supported by the UTAD’s
incubation structure. These youngsters are a clear example
with society. On the other hand, there was also a major
involvement of the city as this initiative took place in public
spaces of the city at night time with moments of science and
technology, sport and magic, paper art “dobras de arte”, music
and theatre, juggling shows with young musicians of the city
who supported this initiative on a voluntary basis. Although
voluntary work should be performed without expecting any
compensation in exchange, the UTAD approved guidelines
that permit the certification of voluntary work with recognised
relevance, as in the case of the young people who supported
the Junior University, through a mention in the supplement to
the diploma.
3. What can we expect in the next edition?
The next edition should involve more entities and
companies of the region in collective strategies that will help
to bring young people more into touch with science, technology
and culture, involving vocational strategies to assist young
people in their choice of a study area. The range of scientific,
pedagogical, fun and cultural activities within a university
context needs to be extended, involving a greater number of
youngsters from different geographic regions. In this way, the

1. What is the Geology Museum and what are its objectives?
The Fernando Real Geology Museum is a place where
the Sciences of the Earth are represented through a series
of artefacts that represent some of the geological processes
that have been occurring, and still occur, on the planet for
many millions of years. Its main objective is to create a living
space where the students of the UTAD and visitors, particularly
students and teachers from all the schools in the region, can
find answers to the many questions related with the Sciences
of the Earth and to create the incentive for research and
investigation work and projects to be carried out in the diverse
areas of Geology. Other important objectives of the Fernando
Real Geology Museum are also to promote and divulge the
sciences and geological resources, stimulating and facilitating
interaction with other partners over a wide range of scientific,

The University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, one of the youngest universities in the country,
has gained its place as a centre of academic excellence and innovation in the national and international university panorama. Geared to the creation, transmission and dissemination of culture,
knowledge, science and technology, UTAD lays emphasis on the growing improvement in the quality of teaching, research and extension to the community with five schools (School of Agrarian and
Veterinary Sciences, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Sciences and Technology,
School of Life and Environmental Sciences and School of Nursing) and eight research centres.
