Japeri Golf Newsletter October to December 2014 Success with the Zumbi Trophy The 7th Zumbi dos Palmares Trophy was played at Japeri, with the presence of golfers from all the clubs in Rio. The day was a huge success, with several people remaining on the waiting list. The champions were Vitoria Araujo (from the Japeri Golf School) with Alexandre Rocha (one of our associates.) In second place came Alfredo Moura and José Carlos Chichierchio (both associates of Japeri) and in third place were Thuane Oliveira (Japeri Golf School) with Tiago Albuquerque (a caddie from Gavea.) We had the pleasure of the company of Luiz Henrique Leão Teixeira, the President of the Rio Golf Federation, Tacashi Ishii the technical director as well as Manoel Thompson Flores, the financial director. All the players received shirts from the sponsor Azeite 1492, who also offered a barbeque and beautiful prizes. Another sponsor, Granado, offered gift bags with some of their products to the participants. Thanks to our Head Instructor Jair Medeiros, who organized and put together this very successful day. Cultural Day Out Oi Futuro, one of our sponsors, invited 35 Japeri students to the theatre to see “The Conference of Birds” at the theatre in their cultural center in Rio. Oi Futuro sent a bus to take the 35 young as well as 3 Instructors and our teacher to see the play. After the play they had a picnic in the grounds and all had a great time. Thuane Oliveira wins in Bahia. The last National Junior Tour was played at the Terravista Golf Course, considered one of the most beautiful as well as difficult courses in Brazil, in Bahia in November. In spite of a small turnout, the competition was strong and we congratulate our golfer Thuane Oliveira for her first place in the girls 16 to 18 category. Apart from the Bahia National Tour, our golfers took part in 11 major events valid for national ranking all over the country, as well as several Junior Tours and other events to the total of 24 competitions in 2014. 2 of these were in Chile, when Cristian went to represent Brazil. (21) 2664-4229 Important Invitations Our students are frequently invited to play in top-level championships; with the added bonus of being able to play with the pros. Credit Suisse, the sponsor for the Brazilian Open played at Gavea in November, invited Cristian to play, due to his excellent results so far this year. Breno and Cristian were also invited to play in the CBG Pro Tour at Itanhangá in December for the same reason. Climbing the ranking ladder The Itanhangá Golf Club Open took place in October, valid for state, national as well as world amateur rankings. Breno Domingos and Cristian Barcelos played well with Cristian finishing in 5th place and Breno in 6th in the scratch category. With these results, both went up in the national rankings. In the News 80 articles between TV, magazines, newspapers and golf sites were published in 2014, the most important being the history of Japeri Golfe by CNN International. Others were the program on National TV Globo Esporte about the girls at Japeri, the article in the magazine Golf Monthly about our social project, the article about Cristian Barcelos and Yago Lopes in the national newspaper O Dia, and the article on Cristian’s performance at the 2 championships in Chile in the national newspaper O Globo. Work on the 3 new holes continues Since September, our golf course has been undergoing a renovation, with the work on the 3 new holes. The earth moving of the fairways and shaping of the greens has finished, the greens have been seeded and we now are literally watching the grass grow! We are hoping to inaugurate our new golf course in April. Final Rankings for 2014 State : • • • • • National : Cristian Barcelos is in 2nd place in the adult category.
