Contents include: Microbial contamination; plant sanitation; GMP's and house
organisms; preservatives; efficacy test methods and acceptance criteria;
cosmetics that counteract conditions caused by microorganisms; effects on skin
physiology; harmonization of test methods; and self-preserving cosmetics.
The application of rheology, the study of flow, in many different industries has
been steadily increasing. The IFSCC has recognized the need for a practical
review of this discipline with cosmetic rheology in mind. It is hoped that by
promoting a more widespread understanding of the underlying principles of
rheology, cosmetic science itself may be advanced.
Lipid oxidation, though researched since the beginning of the 20th century, still
gives no complete and satisfactory information on the composition of oxidized
lipids. One important factor contributing to these gaps in our knowledge about
lipid oxidation relates to the shortages in analytical methodology. Analytical
methods suitable for oxidized lipids were often reviewed in the last decade, but
mostly from the aspect of determination of individual oxidized lipid classes, such
as peroxides, aldehydes, polar lipids, or polymers. In this book, they are treated
from the standpoint of types of analytical methods used, including different
volumetric methods, UV-visible spectrometric methods, high performance sizeexclusion chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, electron
spin resonance spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. Analysis of
Lipid Oxidationis essential for further developments in analytical methodology

The objective of this monograph is to review the methods of characterization
and analysis of polymers used in cosmetics. The book is not designed to provide
an exhaustive, up-to-date analysis of the field, but rather to give cosmetic
researchers a basic overview of the types of analysis carried out for new and
established products.

Applied Colloid and Surface Chemistry' is a broad introduction to this
interdisciplinary field. Taking a genuinely applied approach, with applications
drawn from a wide range of industries, this book will meet the demands of the
student and professional currently working in the field. The text includes
keynote sections written by practicing industrial research scientists, bringing to
the reader a wealth of real industrial examples. These examples range from
water treatment through to soil management as well as examples taken from
the coatings and photographic industries. To aid accessibility, some of the more
demanding mathematical derivations are separated from the main text, enabling
them to be avoided as required.

This book is intended to serve as an introduction to the principles and
techniques used in the field of chemical, petroleum, and environmental
engineering. Although the range of subjects deemed to be in the province of
chemical engineering has broadened over the last decade, the basic principles
involved in chemical engineering remain the same. This book lays a foundation
of certain information and skills that can be repeatedly employed in subsequent
courses as well as in professional life. Much of the previous edition has been
rewritten. One new topic (Chapter 20) on adsorption has been
added.Reorganization: Although each chapter has been revised, the sequence of
the topics and the format remain about the same. The Seventh edition takes
individual topics that were previously in one long chapter, and makes them
individual short chapters of them so that readers can feel a sense of

The widespread use of surfactants and their release into the environment has
resulted in an upsurge of interest in the biodegradability of these compounds.
This volume, written by a team of industrial and academic authors, provides an
overview of the science and technology of the subject.
Grade 3-5–Large photos accompany past and present examples of how different
energy sources can help fuel human activities. The clean layout will facilitate
sharing with small groups. All the books include the same chart contrasting
nonrenewable and renewable energy sources, but most of the information
in Biofuels, Solar, and Wind does not overlap. Going Green devotes 12 pages to
these same sources and adds information on hydropower, hydrogen, and
geothermal energy alternatives. A spread in that book suggests ways to reduce,
reuse, and recycle, while text boxes elsewhere offer additional ideas, including
brewing sun tea, a questionable activity because of concerns about bacteria
growth. The other three volumes could serve beginning report writers, and the
attractive design may draw browsers and general readers as well.
Neste livro, pesquisadores brasileiros e estrangeiros abordam as diversas
The author's expectation is to introduce to the novice and to the practitioner the
structures, reactions and applications of a group of compounds known as
carbohydrates. Carbohydrates play an important role in our lives and in life
itself. This study includes topics such as reactions, structural determinations,
laboratory syntheses, analytical procedures, and the use of carbohydrates in
cosmetics and other products. A question and answer section is also provided
for those who wish to use the book as a self-study text.

Provides a sound theoretical basis for understanding chemical kinetics and its
uses in studying drug stability. Treats the calculations, approximations, and
estimates that are useful to the pharmacist in professional practice, and
presents a collection of selected drug-stability data from the pharmaceutical
literature. This Handbook makes accessible to the pharmacist much of the
information necessary to make pharmaceutical decisions about drug stability.
Changes in this edition include thorough revision of the chapter on oxidation,
addition of a new chapter on solid-state stability, and a tripling of the number of
stability monographs. All monographs figures have been redrawn, most of them
from published data, and all sources are cited.

Within this volume is a thorough coverage of the fundamental principles
embracing modern theories of colloid chemistry applied to mineral processing. It
is written in respect for Dr. J.A. Kitchener, distinguished Reader in the Science of
Mineral Processing in the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College, University of
London (recently retired). Dr. Kitchener's expertise in colloid chemistry has led
to numerous fundamental insights and practical advances in flotation, selective
flocculation, and the treatment of slimes. Colloid chemistry is inevitably involved
in all aspects of mineral processing, ranging from how collectors selectively
adsorb on to mineral surfaces in flotation, to the forces which control the
stability of dispersions of submicron particles, as well as embracing the
behaviour of hydrolyzed metal ions in solid-water slurries. The intelligent use of
this information is essential in the effective design of separation processes and
strategies by the mineral processor. Up to date bibliographies are included at
the end of each of the 13 chapters making this volume a useful general resource
for researchers, students and mineral processors.
The first modern approach to relate fundamental research to the applied science
of colloids, this series bridges academic research and industrial applications,
thus providing the information vital to both. Written by the very best scientists
in their respective disciplines, the five volumes are edited by an internationally
recognized expert on this topic. This volume describes the role of colloids in

Volume 2 of this Annual Surfactants Review series addresses some
structure/performance considerations, from computer modelling through to a
consideration of how to modify specific surfactants by adjusting carbon chain
length distribution, by studying the influence of chain branching, by introducing
reactive groups or fluorinated hydrophobes, or by replacing conventional
hydrophobes (or hydrophiles) with natural feedstock derivatives. Two end-use
applications are included, not only to report the latest developments in those
areas but also to illustrate the performance/selection approach in identifying
the most appropriate surfactants for a specific end use.
Due to the potential benefits of biotechnology, interest in the interaction
between DNA and surfactants and polymers has become increasingly significant.
Now, DNA Interactions with Polymers and Surfactants provides an extensive, upto-date overview of the subject, giving readers a basis for understanding the
factors leading to complexation between DNA and different cosolutes, including
metal ions, polyelectrolytes, spermine, spermidine, surfactants and lipids, and
proteins.

depth to either of these books. For those not interested in this historical and
sociological information, the books are still relevant because not only is the
chemistry of each ingredient discussed (and there have been very few major
ingredients developed since that time) but so are the requirements of each
marketing segment ("protein" shampoo, "baby" shampoo, "moisturizing" rinse,
etc.). Together, these books form a complete encyclopedia of surfactants since
between them they cover the major types (e.g., foaming agents and anionics
principally in shampoos and emulsifiers, nonionics and cationics principally in
conditioners). Other ingredient types are dealt with in depth (e.g., "natural"
ingredients, "preservatives", "viscosity control agents") and full details regarding
the manufacture, properties and uses of all these materials in hair products are
provided.

chapter gives a brief introduction general enough for the non-specialist Written
by a internationally recognized group of contributors.
Fatty alcohols occur naturally in most organisms and can also be used in
consumer products including detergents and cosmetics and all of these
materials make their way to the sea eventually. These long chain alcohols can be
used as biomarkers due to their distinctive source allocations although they
have differential degradation rates across the range of chain lengths. Concern
has been raised about their inputs from anthropogenic uses and this book seeks
to set out the natural and industrial synthetic pathways, sources, signatures,
concentrations in the environment, toxicity and eco-toxicity before summarising

legislation for chemicals and substances. There is no other book that considers
the fatty alcohols from their production, environmental behaviour and potential
toxicity viewpoint. The book, which is also well illustrated, presents for the first
time environmental data from many locations around the world and discusses
the anthropogenic contributions to these places.

Laboratory workers generate waste chemicals. The ideal solution to the problem
of disposal of such wastes is to eliminate them at the source. Much progress has
been made and continues to be made in this area. However, the disposal of
relatively small quantities of a large variety of chemical wastes generated, for
example, in school, college, and university laboratories, in hospital pharmacies
and in research, analytical, and quality control laboratories can be difficult and
expensive. This book provides the means for waste disposal under these
conditions. Hazardous Laboratory Chemicals Disposal Guide, Second Edition is an
excellent handbook filled with information on the disposal of more than 500
waste and surplus chemicals. Emphasis is placed on disposal methods that turn
hazardous waste material into non-toxic products. These methods fall into
several categories, including acid/base neutralization, oxidation or reduction,
and precipitation of toxic ions as insoluble solids.Hazardous Laboratory
Chemicals Disposal Guide, Second Edition also provides data on hazardous
reactions of chemicals, assisting laboratory managers in developing a plan of
action for emergencies such as the spill of any of the chemicals listed.
This beautiful compilation of invited review articles -- authored by well-known
scientists -- covers the latest developments and achievements in colloid and

This outstanding classic is the standard on industrial minerals and rocks.
Organized in two parts, this hardbound book contains an introduction describing
the broad field of industrial minerals, and chapters on commodities and uses,
arranged in alphabetical order for quick consultation. The comprehensive
reference consists of 94 chapters produced by more than 130 authors, all
experts in their respective fields. The work is fully indexed.
Vegetable oils are used in various industrial applications such as emulsifiers,
lubricants, plasticizers, surfactants, plastics, solvents, and resins. Research and
development approaches take advantage of the natural properties of these oils.
These oils have superb environmental credentials, such as being inherently
biodegradable, having low ecotoxicity and low toxicity towards humans, being
derived from renewable resources and contributing no volatile organic
chemicals. Recent research has focused on the development of new industrial
products, including the use of vegetable oils in paint and coatings, printing inks,
engine oils, and biodiesel. Industrial Uses of Vegetable Oils offers new insights
into these important (and growing) products of vegetable oils, while also
covering developments in biodegradable grease, vegetable oils-based polyols,
and the synthesis of surfactants from vegetable oil feedstocks.
This monograph describes monographs of preparation and basic properties of
cosmetic macroemulsions. It deals with the basic principles and practice rather
than the theory of emulsification, and recommends methods for overcoming
many of the problems encountered during formulation. It is intended to answer
questions raised by the inexperienced formulator and to introduce the better
versed to some of the intricacies of emulsion development.
Within the field of cosmetic science, cosmetic microbiology is a dynamic
discipline which is growing to meet the needs of scientists in the cosmetic and
pharmaceutical industries. Cosmetic microbiology was, in its first 50 years,
primarily concerned with the microbiological asepcts of plant sanitation,
determining aerobic plate counts of finished products, and preservative efficacy
testing. Changes are being made in the cosmetic products and claims.
Companies are introducing products that are more therapeutically positioned,
that claim increased performance in treataing specific conditions, and that meet
changed consumer needs. These developments are cause a shift of focus in

cosmetic microbiology from formula development and manufacturing plant
sanitation concerns to clinical studies on the effects of active ingredients in drug
products and microorganisms on the skin. This monograph discusses issues
relevant to cosmetic and drug microbiology.
First published in 1994, this book has become the standard reference work for
perfumery students throughout the world. Intended as a first-year text, the
book assumes no prior knowledge of perfumery. The authors provide integrated
coverage of topics from raw materials to supermarket shelves, from science to
creation, and through to marketing and business policy. The power of fragrances
to communicate is strongly emphasized and an explicit framework of odour
vocabulary provided. Detailed discussion is included of the new product
development process and the central role of the perfume brief. For this edition,
all chapters have been revised, some considerably, and the book will be of great
value to any writer or researcher wishing to consider any issues relating to
fragranced products.
Lea's Chemistry of Cement and Concrete deals with the chemical and physical
properties of cements and concretes and their relation to the practical problems
that arise in manufacture and use. As such it is addressed not only to the
chemist and those concerned with the science and technology of silicate
materials, but also to those interested in the use of concrete in building and civil
engineering construction. Much attention is given to the suitability of materials,
to the conditions under which concrete can excel and those where it may
deteriorate and to the precautionary or remedial measures that can be adopted.
First published in 1935, this is the fourth edition and the first to appear since the
death of Sir Frederick Lea, the original author. Over the life of the first three
editions, this book has become the authority on its subject. The fourth edition is
edited by Professor Peter C. Hewlett, Director of the British Board of Agrement
and visiting Industrial Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the
University of Dundee. Professor Hewlett has brought together a distinguished
body of international contributors to produce an edition which is a worthy
successor to the previous editions.

Macromolecular chemistry is the study of the physical, biological and chemical
structure, properties, composition, and reaction mechanisms of
macromolecules. A macromolecule is a molecule that consists of one or more
types of repeated 'building blocks'. The building blocks are called monomeric
units (monomers). Macromolecules (also known as polymer molecules) appear
in daily life in the form of plastic, styrofoam, nylon, etc. These polymers (ie:
substances consisting of polymer molecules), are of great technological
importance and are used in the manufacturing of all sorts of goods, from
automobile parts to household appliances. The artificial polymer molecules
usually exist of long repetitions of identical monomers, either in chains or
networks.

Immunoassay methods are becoming more specific, precise, and sensitive in
monitoring pesticide residues in foods, production crops, and environmental
materials. This book discusses the current application and new developments of
immunoassays in trace analytical determination. It is divided into six
sections: Section I, "Current Needs for Immunoassays," provides information on
the need for enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) in regulatory
activities. The performance that is required from these methods is also
discussed. Section II, "Synthesis of Haptens," addresses research being carried
out to increase the specific of immunoassay methods while maintaining their
sensitivity. An extensive literature review is included, which focuses on assay
development and hapten designs for low-molecular-weight compounds. Section
III, "Immunoassay Formats," discusses the practical application and technical
considerations of immunoassays using examples of magnetic bead immunoassay
and biosensor technology. Guidelines for identifying and correcting problems
during assay development are provided. Section IV, "Sample Preparation from
Various Matrices," contains chapters on the cleanup of water, soil, and other
matrices using immunoassay methods together with solid-phase C18 extraction
and immunoaffinity chromatography to concentrate and purify the analyte.
Other innovative methods to improve immunoassay precision and/or specificity
are also discussed. Section V, "Most Recent Advances in Immunochemical
Methods," includes chapters on forthcoming methods that use DNA
technologies (e.g., the polymerase chain reactions) to modify antibodies that are
useful for analyzing small molecules. In addition, the characteristics of polyclonal
and monoclonal antibodies for determining taiazine herbicides are compared;
immunomagnetic cell separation for preparing monoclonal antibodies is
discussed; a double-antibody sandwich ELISA and a biotin-streptavidin ELISA are
compared. Finally, the history, architecture for the antibody molecule,
advantages, and limitations of DNA technology are discussed. A chapter on the
use of urinary biomarkers as indicators of personal exposure is also included.
The final section, "Chemometric or Statistical Methods of
Quantification," covers general concepts of quanitiative analysis as well as
sophisticated and novel statistical approaches in the analytical process. Control
charts, statistical tests, and graphical presentations in immunoassay are

use of wells in a 96-well-plate format for estimating the proper precision.
Comparisons are presented in two chapters among several calibration methods;
the use of the novel parallel fitting method and a least squares calibration
approach with the asymptotic theory and a bootstrap method. The final chapter
discusses multivariate matching, a powerful technique that few have used in

This book is about the perfumes which were commonly made and sold in the
perfumeries and chemists’ shops in Britain over a period of some two hundred
years from about the beginning of the eighteenth century, soon after JeanAntoine Farina moved from Italy to settle in the German city of Cologne, which
gave its name to the most popular toilet water of all time. So begins Perfumes of
Yesterday, which provides a fascinating account of the development of
perfumery, as it progressed mainly from the seventeenth to the twentieth
centuries. It focuses particularly on the Victorian and Edwardian eras in Britain,
but also follows the parallel development of perfumery in other countries in
Europe. The book’s purpose is to provide a study of the old and mostly simple
examples of the perfumer’s art in order to gain some insight into the ancestry,
and therefore a better understanding, of the more complex fragrances of today,
themselves already the progenitors of the perfumes of tomorrow. The historical
approach of the first part of the book gives context to its main section –
formularies of perfumes and toilet waters that have been gathered from
published articles and books dating from or before the 1920s and which relate
mostly to perfumes of much earlier origin, some from as far back as the
eighteenth century, when chemistry had yet to become an exact science and the
possibility of its application to perfumery quite beyond imagination. One recipe
for an Eau de Cologne dates from 1700. Following each formula is a discussion of
various aspects of the perfume: its composition; the geographical and botanical
sources of its ingredients and the method of extraction of their essential oils; its
odour properties and the fragrance effects resulting from its particular
combination of ingredients – and, here, an analysis of the composition of some

of the apparently simple perfumes reveals a staggering complexity of major,
minor and trace components. The discussion may also cover the historical
context of a perfume’s use; the history behind its name; and the counterparts of
its ingredients in modern perfumery. The book concludes with a discourse on
the perfumes of today and tomorrow. The main sections are followed by five
appendices, a glossary of some technical terms, a reading list and an index.
While the book is intended primarily for the professional perfumer and students
of perfumery, it is hoped that the variety of information and the insights that it
provides, not only in relation to perfumery production methods and ingredient
sources, but also to the social history of perfumery and the psychology of
perfume, will be of interest to the more general reader.

Polymer degradation is a change in the properties - tensile strength, colour,
shape, etc - of a polymer or polymer based product under the influence of one
or more environmental factors such as heat, light or chemicals. These changes
may be undesirable, such as changes during use, or desirable, as in
biodegradation or deliberately lowering the molecular weight of a polymer. Such
changes occur primarily because of the effect of these factors on the chemical
composition of the polymer. In a finished product such a change is to be
prevented or delayed. However the degradation process can be useful from the
view points of understanding the structure of a polymer or recycling/reusing the
polymer waste to prevent or reduce environmental pollution. Polymer
molecules are very large on the molecular scale which derive their unique and
useful properties from their size. This book presents leading-edge research in
this field.

Written for ceramic process managers, engineers and technicians Predictive
Process Control of Crowded Particulate Suspensions covers the cause and effect
relationships between fundamental particle physics of powders, fundamental
interparticle chemistry in suspensions, and the resulting rheology of crowded
suspensions. It then applies these fundamentals to ceramic forming processes
and explains why variations in performance occur and how to correct for them.
Predictive Process Control (PPC) is a new approach to identifying variations in
the properties of raw materials used in ceramic manufacturing and controlling
the response of a ceramic composition before it is released to production.
Compared to the old method of constant amounts of varying raw materials, this
new method provides constant percentages of key properties of those raw
materials. It has been tested to good effect with very substantial improvement
in quality and percent yield, and it is also being used to profile raw material
deposits for future exploitation. An authoritative and comprehensive reference
on PPC, Predictive Process Control of Crowded Particulate Suspensions is an
invaluable resource for technical managers, production engineers and
technicians in any manufacturing enterprise which utilizes crowded particulate
suspensions.
Introduces the principles that augment the formu-lation of products free from
traditional preservatives by creating a hostile environment for microorganisms
without diminishing quality. Emphasizes that the preservation of a product
should be inherent in the formula itself and examines the use of multifunctional
chemicals whose secondary characteristics include germistatic and germicidal
qualities.

The new edition of a classic text and reference
The large chains of molecules known as polymers are currently used in
everything from "wash and wear" clothing to rubber tires to protective enamels
and paints. Yet the practical applications of polymers are only increasing;
innovations in polymer chemistry constantly bring both improved and entirely
new uses for polymers onto the technological playing field. Principles of
Polymerization, Fourth Edition presents the classic text on polymer synthesis,
fully updated to reflect today's state of the art. New and expanded coverage in
the Fourth Edition includes: Metallocene and post-metallocene polymerization
catalysts. Living polymerizations (radical, cationic, anionic). Dendrimer,
hyperbranched, brush, and other polymer architectures and assemblies. Graft
and block copolymers. High-temperature polymers. Inorganic and
organometallic polymers. Conducting polymers. Ring-opening polymerization. In
vivo and in vitro polymerization. Appropriate for both novice and advanced
students as well as professionals, this comprehensive yet accessible resource
enables the reader to achieve an advanced, up-to-date understanding of
polymer synthesis. Different methods of polymerization, reaction parameters for
synthesis, molecular weight, branching and crosslinking, and the chemical and
physical structure of polymers all receive ample coverage. A thorough discussion
at the elementary level prefaces each topic, with a more advanced treatment
following. Yet the language throughout remains straightforward and geared
towards the student. Extensively updated, Principles of Polymerization, Fourth
Edition provides an excellent textbook for today's students of polymer
chemistry, chemical engineering, and materials science, as well as a current
reference for the researcher or other practitioner working in these areas.

Designed as a laboratory aid to cosmetic scientists who require an overview of
product evaluation, the monograph presents a framework, illustrated by
examples, of the principles of product evaluation. The examples aim to help the
nonstatistician and nonexpert to understand and use the techniques described.
Process Systems Analysis and Control, third edition retains the clarity of
presentation for which this book is well known. It is an ideal teaching and
learning tool for a semester-long undergraduate chemical engineering course in
process dynamics and control. It avoids the encyclopedic approach of many
other texts on this topic. Computer examples using MATLAB® and Simulink®
have been introduced throughout the book to supplement and enhance
standard hand-solved examples. These packages allow the easy construction of
block diagrams and quick analysis of control concepts to enable the student to
explore "what-if" type problems that would be much more difficult and time
consuming by hand.
One of the most important objective in this text describes the strategies and
approaches for the design of chemical processes. It covers economic
(optimization) and environmental issues. The latest design strategies are
described, most of which have been improved significantly with the advent of
computers, mathematical programming methods, and artificial intelligence.
Various methods are utilized to perform the extensive calculations and provide
graphical results that are visualized easily, including the usage of computer
programs for simulation and design optimization.

REVIEW: This monograph remains the bible for practising chemists wishing to
know how to dry solvents or purify commercially available laboratory
chemicals...The authors have made good use of computerised databases for up
to date information and have placed a noticeable emphasis on safety. It is of
manageable size and, like its forebears, will be the most commonly used
reference book in any chemical or biochemical laboratory. - Molecular Diversity
Preservation International (MDPI)
With the global renewal of interest in PVC, this book is well timed, considering
that PVC stabilization is the most important aspect of its formulation and
performance. Only four books have been published on PVC degradation and
stabilization (the last one in the 1980s), and two of them are by the author of
this book. Separate chapters review information on chemical structure, PVC
manufacturing technology, morphology, degradation by thermal energy, and
UV, gamma, and other forms of radiation, mechanodegradation, chemical
degradation, analytic methods used in studying of degradative and stabilization
processes, stabilization, and effect of PVC and its additives on health, safety and
environment. This book contains analysis of all essential papers published until
recently on the above subject. It either locates the answers to relevant
questions and offers solutions or gives references in which such answers can be
found. PVC Degradation and Stabilization is must have for chemists, engineers,
scientists, university teachers and students, designers, material scientists,
environmental chemists, and lawyers who work with polyvinyl chloride and its
additives or have any interest in these products. This book is the one
authoritative source on the subject.
This 3rd edition presents a comprehensive analytical approach to all aspects of
quality assurance. It recognizes the role of ISO/IEC 17025 as an international
laboratory accreditation standard, and the increasing need for laboratories to
demonstrate quality performance through external accreditation processes
accepted by national accreditation organizations operating within the ISO
umbrella. A new chapter describing the role and content of the quality
assurance manual has been added and contains a more global or international
approach to quality assurance audits and accreditation.

This book was written to help ceramists to understand the subject of rheology as
it applies to suspensions. Unlike other subjects, ceramists must deal with
suspensions and the complexities of viscous behaviors from the first day they set
foot into a ceramics lab or production environment. Topics discussed include
viscosity and rheology fundamentals, syneresis and dilatancy and their causes
and effects in ceramic process systems, the rheological effects of gelation,
flocculation, and deflocculation, as well as the different types of viscometers
that can be used to measure rheological properties. Many practical
considerations are included throughout this book. The discussion in the final
chapter covers the methods available to adjust and control suspension
rheologies in the ceramic process environment. This book will be valuable
reading and a handy reference for all ceramists, including students, technicians,
engineers, managers, and artists, who want to learn more about the rheology of
suspensions.

Over the last thirty years, the study of liquids containing polymers, surfactants
or colloidal particles has developed from a loose assembly of facts into a
coherent discipline with substantial predictive power. These liquids expand our
conception of what condensed matter can do. Such structured-fluid phenomena
dominate the physical environment within living cells. This book teaches how to
think of these fluids from a unified point of view, showing the far-reaching
effects of thermal fluctuations in producing forces and motions. Keeping
mathematics to a minimum, the book seeks the simplest explanations that
account for the distinctive scaling properties of these fluids. An example is the
growth of viscosity of a polymer solution as the cube of the molecular weight of
the constituent polymers. Another is the hydrodynamic radius of a colloidal
aggregate, which remains comparable to its geometrical radius even though the
density of particles in the aggregate becomes arbitrarily small. The book aims for
a simplicity, unity and depth not found in previous treatments. The text is
supplemented by numerous figures, tables and problems to aid the student.

In response to intensifying interest on surfactant research brought on by recent
innovation, Structure-Performance Relationships in Surfactants, Second Edition
examines novel developments in our understanding of the properties and
performance of surfactants at air-liquid, liquid-liquid, and solid-liquid interfaces,
highlighting seven new chapters and carefully updated material to reflect
current trends. This edition presents new material on the adsorption of vesicleforming surfactants at the air-water interface, fluorinated surfactants having
two hydrophobic chains, surface-active properties of telomer-type surfactants
having several hydrocarbon chains, and the association behavior of amphiphilic
dendritic polymers, among many other topics.
It is anticipated that submicron emulsion and lipid suspension will find
numerous and novel medical applications in the near future. The purpose of this
book is to provide the reader with an up-to-date general overview of submicron
emulsions and lipid suspensions (solid lipid nanoparticles) as well as to
emphasize the various methods of preparation, characterization, evaluation, and
potential applications in various therapeutic areas.

This book should be of interest to senior undergraduates, postgraduates and
researchers in chemistry, pharmacology, pharmacy and biochemistry.
This entirely revised Second Edition provides a thorough, up-to-date treatment
of the fundamental behavior of surface active agents in solutions, their
interaction with biological structures from proteins and membranes to the
stratum corneum and epidermis, and their performance in formulations such as
shampoos, dentifrice, aerosols, and skin cleansers.
Surfactants play a major part in most personal care applications. In many
formulations, such as those for hair, shower, bath and oral hygiene products,
their purpose is to clean. In other products, such as creams and lotions,
surfactants provide the necessary emulsification. Usually surfactants confer
additional properties to formulations, such as wetting and foaming. Formulating
with surfactants needs an understanding of how they react with each other and
with other surfactant components. Apart from covering such requirements in
detail, Eric Lomax has, in this profusely illustrated book, examined the properties
required of various personal care formulations and considered the types of
surfactant used. A final section contains formulations and another an extensive
glossary and index.
From anti-aging creams to make-up, surfactants play a key role as delivery
systems for skin care and decorative cosmetic products. Surfactants in Personal
Care Products and Decorative Cosmetics, Third Edition presents a scientific basis
in surfactant science and recent advances in the industry necessary for
understanding, formulating, and testing surfactant-based cosmetics and
cosmeceuticals. Presenting a new perspective from the previous edition, this
book details the function of emulsions, microemulsions, micelles, and
nanostructures in the formulation of personal care products and decorative
cosmetics and examines their ability to deliver specific benefits to the skin. This
edition begins by describing new research into skin structure and cellular
processes. Then it presents the latest methods and techniques for substantiating

claims and assessing the effectiveness of moisturizers, anti-aging treatments,
and sunscreens. Subsequent chapters focus on surfactant solution properties,
surfactant emulsions, nanotechnology, cleanser/conditioner systems, and
pigment dispersions. Following a detailed examination on the role of surfactants
in finished pigmented products, this edition also discusses optimal formulation
strategies and surfactant raw materials for enhancing pigmented products. The
third edition of Surfactants in Personal Care Products and Decorative
Cosmetics, Third Edition helps formulators identify and overcome the challenges
involved in developing new applications and enhancing the benefits of cosmetic
and cosmeceutical products.
Surfactants play a variety of critical roles in tribology. In addition to controlling
friction and wear, they also allow for control of a wide range of properties of
lubricants, such as emulsification/demulsification, bioresistance, oxidation
resistance, and rust/corrosion prevention. This book explains recent advances in
the role of surfactants within the purview of tribology, with an emphasis on
product development. Includes Theoretical, Experimental, and Technological
Advances.
A general introduction to surfactants, surface activity, and surfactant
applications. Important advances in the tools available for studying the activity
of surfactants has significantly increased scientific understanding of interfaces at
the molecular level. However, there is still much to be learned. In this Third
Edition of the successful classic, author and expert Drew Myers combines the
latest information available in the field of surfactants with his original, accessible
text on the subject. Now fully updated to reflect recent developments in
working with surfactants in both model and practical systems, the Third Edition
of Surfactant Science and Technology provides a solid introduction to the field of
surfactant science. Written especially for beginners and nonspecialists who
would like a practical but not necessarily comprehensive knowledge of the field,
this clear, cogent text conveys the most fundamental and useful concepts of
surfactant action and application. New chapters bring readers up to date on
current biological and medical applications of surfactants, as well as applications
in food science, cosmetics, and other areas. In addition to new chapters,
Surfactant Science and Technology includes illustrative problems at the end of

The type and amount of textile products have greatly proliferated over the last
decade. Concomitant textile processing to improve the properties and ultimate
performance has also undergone dramatic changes. Ready availability of
instrumentation, computers, lasers and integration of these advances with
similar progress in polymer/material science have led to the need for a unified
discussion on these topics. The current book concisely discusses all aspects of
textile processing, modification and performance for four major topics:
preparation (by fiber type), dyeing and printing (dye type, theory and synthesis;
dye classification by structure and application), improving functional and

Keeping pace with rapid developments in the field, this reference analyzes new
fibers, spinning methods, and weaving techniques affecting textile production
and studies the impact of fiber properties, yarn quality, sizing processes and
materials, and chemical and mechanical phenomena on efficient textile
manufacturing and development.
This book is an update to the first edition compiled and published in 1990 by
William Woishnis. A lot has changed in the field since 1990 and a lot has not
changed. There are new plastic materials. There has been a huge turnover in
ownership of plastics producing companies. There has been a lot of
consolidation, which of course means discontinued products. Thus, this update
is much more extensive than the usual "next edition." It has been reorganized
from a chemistry point of view. Plastics of similar polymer types are grouped
into nine chapters. Each of these chapters includes an introduction with a brief
explanation of the chemistry of the polymers used in the plastics. An extensive
first chapter has been added as an introduction that summarizes the chemistry
of making polymers, the formulation of plastics, testing and test methods, and
plastic selection. Most plastic products and parts are expected to be used in
environments other than room temperature and standard humidity conditions.
Chapters 2-10 are a databank that serves as an evaluation of plastics as they are
exposed to varying operating conditions at different temperatures, humidity,
and other factors. Over 900 graphs for more than 45 generic families of plastics
are contained in these chapters.

In print for over thirty years, The Printing Ink Manual, published on behalf of the
Society of British Printing Ink Manufacturers, is the industry 'bible' for all printing
ink technologists, manufacturers, packaging and publishing printers all over the
world. Thoroughly revised and updated throughout, the new material present in
this fifth edition reflects the substantial developments that have taken place in
recent years, including: The dramatic expansion in the use of lithographic inks
with particular attention to cold-set, head-set, sheet-set, sheet-fed and web
offset and metal decorating inks. The use of flexographic inks in newspaper
printing. Ink-jet inks: a complete new chapter has been added. The most recent
theories of high-speed measurements in the rheology of inks. The European
Quality Assurance Standards ISO 9000. The latest legislation on health, safety
and the environment. All chapters have been reviewed, updated and expanded
wherever needed. Further important features include a listing of all the raw
materials used regularly in the manufacture of printing inks, giving full
information on their physical and chemical properties. Formulation technology is
fully illustrated with practical examples and the significance of environmental
issues and quality management is also covered in detail. Legislation, mainly
European and from the United States, together with specifications set by worldwide end-users have established printing ink as a truly international product.
Many of the chapters in ThePrinting Ink Manual have been written by authors
working for international companies to ensure that the contents include the
widest international practices and The Printing Ink Manual therefore represents
an international reference source which is used throughout the world.
The book is in three parts. The Introduction, which forms the first part, provides
a detailed background to surfactant technology for the benefit of those new to
the subject. The second part, the Encyclopedia, provides more detailed
explanations of surfactants and their uses. Running to some 180 pages, this
section is devoted to describing the properties, applications and structure of
surfactants and to explaining surfactant terms. The third section, the Dictionary,
occupying over 100 pages, defines the terms used in the surfactant industry,
many of which are cross-referenced. The sturdy, loose-leaf binder format
enables the reader to add his or her own material.

This book summarizes recent developments in the study of the thermal
degradation of polymers. It presents an overview of thermal degradation
mechanisms and kinetics, and decribes the use of thermogravimetry and
differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), in combination with mass spectroscopy
and infrared spectrometry, to investigate thermal decomposition. The book
discusses the thermal degradation of various polymers, copolymers, highperformance plastics, blends, and composites, including polyolefins, styrenes,
polyvinyl chloride, polyamides, polyurethanes, polyesters, polyacrylates, and
others. From the Preface: “...The degradation of materials could either worsen
the properties and therefore be undesired, or lead to a useful phenomenon in
terms of compatibilisation and stabilisation of the polymer via degradationinduced cross-reactions or recycling of polymer waste through thermal
degradation...”. Target Audience: Polymer researchers and processing
technologists requiring an understanding of the implicatoins of thermal
degradation on material and end-use performance.
Thermoplastics represent appx 90% by weight of all plastics consumed worldwide. We know them mainly in the form of polythenes, polyolefins,
polystyrenes, nylons and acrylics. Under different heating conditions and by
varying the composition of the plastic it is possible to make many different
products with differing properties. This is a decision-making tool and sourcebook of information for plastics users, providing detailed accounts of the
materials used, their economics, the selection of appropriate materials, and the
use of thermoplastic resins and their composites. By having this book to hand,
you will use the right material in the right way to produce the right product.
Provides a quick and pragmatic approach to selecting thermoplastics for the
non-specialist plastics user. Offers detailed accounts of thermoplastics including
economic and technological elements. Clear and easy to understand illustrated
with figures, tables and graphs throughout

Conveniently consolidating material and information scattered throughout the
statistical literature, this manual allows the analytical investigator, with a
knowledge of only simple statistical procedures, to use the experimental designs
and techniques described to determine and evaluate assignable causes of
variability. The book reviews the basic operations used in the process of making
measurements, gives general suggestions for planning experimental work so
that appropriate statistical methodologies can be used to interpret the results,
includes a number of experimental plans for developing and modifying analytical
procedures, and discusses evaluation of the data. Other features include scores
of specific statistical analyses of real-life data, many useful statistical tables, and
very complete references. It is a natural extension of and a valuable addition to
the Youden-Steiner classic, Statistical Manual of the AOAC.
