Leather Shoes
China is one of the world main producers of shoes, however the significant growth of Chinese
market and population income, specially its middle and high classes, indicates huge opportunities
in market niches for high quality and added value Leather Shoes. The main opportunities
identified are: women's sandals and shoes with light colors, plus high-quality children's shoes.
According to research developed by AT Kearney, the average annual spent of Chinese consumers
on shoes is about US$450 and quality is the most important buying criteria.

Graphic 2 shows that, between 2006 and 2011, there was a significant import growth in China of
leather shoes. The annual average growth of Chinese imports of leather shoes on that period was
34%, while total Brazilian export to China grew an average of 15,5% in the same period. Therefore,
Brazilian leather shoes are gaining market share in the China. However, according to Graphic 1,
Brazil continues to have a very low participation in the Chinese market. In 2011, only 0.9% of
Chinese imports in this sector had origin in Brazil. The average applied tariff to leather shoes in
China is 10%.
Brazilian exports of leather footwear reached $ 743.7 million in 2011. The largest export markets
of Brazilian leather shoes were the United States, United Kingdom, Italy, France and Chile.
Together, these countries were the destination of 59.2% of Brazilian total exports.

Jewelry
According to a research developed by AT Kearney, Chinese consumers buy jewelry once a year.
The annual average spending with jewelry is US$ 1.300 and these products have higher demand
among medium and higher class consumers and middle age women. As in the leather footwear
segment, jewelry quality is the most important purchase criteria. Features such as quality, design
and durability are more important than brands. In this segment, the focus should be in jewelry
with stained gems (earrings, necklaces and rings), small, simple and elegant.

The Chinese jewelry imports were US$ 126 million in 2006 and grew to US$ 439 million in 2011, as
seen in the Graphic 5, and the 5 biggest suppliers detained more than 80% of this market in 2011
as seen in the Graphic 4. Average applied tariff of these products is between 20% and 35%, the
highest among the selected sectors for commercial promotion. Brazilian participation in this
segment is very small; in 2011 Chinese imports from Brazil represented only 0.001%. During 2006
– 2011 period, the average growth of the Chinese jewelry imports were 21.1%, showing an
increasingly importance of this segment in the Chinese imports.
Brazilian exports of jewelery had average annual growth of 2.2% between 2006 and 2011. In 2011,
the United States was the largest importer with $ 31.3 million.

Instant coffee responded for 98,5% of coffee sales in China in 2011. However, consumers with
higher income seem to favor freshly brewed coffee, mainly consumed in coffee shops. Therefore,
this segment offers opportunities for Brazilian exporters to increase their sales to China.
Brazilian exports of roasted coffee totaled US$ 25.9 million in 2011, and of this total were 52.6%
for the United States. Italy was in second place with 18.5% and Japan third with 5.7%. The average
annual growth in exports between 2006 and 2011 was 1.2%.

Brazil has health certificates to export poultry meat to China and Hong Kong. The demand for
poultry meat has increased since China imposed an anti-dumping measure against poultry exports
from the U.S. last year. According to the Brazilian Association of Chicken Producers and Exporters ABEF, only 25 Brazilian plants are authorized to export to China while the number of plants
authorized to export to Hong Kong is much higher. It is also worth mentioning that the average
tariff rate for these products is between 6.7% to 20%.
Brazil is the largest exporter of poultry, with 28% share in total world’s exports. Brazilian exports
grew an average 22% per year between 2006 and 2011. Japan was the largest market to Brazilian
poultry in 2011, followed by Hong Kong. Together, these two countries were destination to 35% of
Brazilian poultry exports. China is Brazil’s fourth largest market, absorbing 6% of total poultry

Honey
Graphic 16 shows that two countries have a market share that represents more than half the
Chinese imports of honey in 2011 (New Zealand and Australia – 45.5% and 11.5%). Brazil is the
15th main supplier but with a small representation of 0.6%. Graphic 17 shows the import growth
of honey which in 2006 was US$ 1 million and in 2011 reached US$ 10.9 million. The average
growth (in the period 2006 to 2011) was 52.3%. The Chinese average tariff for honey is 15%.

Although Brazil has health certificates for exporting honey to China, there are barriers to export
propolis. New Zealand is the only country that is able to export finished products (extract of
propolis and propolis capsules) for China.
Brazilian exports of honey grown on average 25% per year between 2006 and 2011. United States
and Germany are the main markets of Brazil. Together, the countries are the destination of 84% of
Brazilian exports of the product.

Stone works and similar
Chinese imports of products of stone works and similar analyzed here (HS codes 6802.23, 6802.29,
6802.93, 6803.00 and 6814.10) totaled US$ 26 million in 2011. Brazil was the second supplier for
China with exports of U$3.3 million. Brazil exported mainly rough granite (blocks).
Sindirochas, the main association of granite producers, predicts that by 2025 the world production
of natural stones will be concentrated in China, India and Brazil, Turkey and possibly Iran.
These points demonstrate the competitive level of the Brazilian industry. The main difficulty in
accessing the Chinese market for these products with respect to tariff escalation applied,
preventing the flow of trade is even greater. In the stone sector, the issue is even more sensitive
because China does not apply import tariffs for rough granite (blocks), while the tariff for imports
of worked granite (finished and semi-finished products, polish slabs of granite) is 24%.
Therefore, it would be useful to have MOFCOM to re-evaluate tariffs applied to imports of worked
granite, in order to ease bilateral trade distortions caused by tariff escalation. This issue was the
subject of communication from the former Executive Secretary, Mr Ivan Ramalho, in September
2008, when Mr. Gao Hucheng, Vice Minister of Commerce.

Machines and Equipment for Agricultural Use (Except Tractors)
China is one of the largest agricultural producers in the world. Nevertheless, with urbanization and
rising incomes of the population, it needs to continually increase their production to meet the
rapidly growing demand. The country faces limitations of natural resources, since it has 20% of the
world population, but only 10% of arable land and 7% of the freshwater. Thus, it is important for
China to increase the efficiency and productivity of its agriculture.
Agricultural and forestry machinery production in Brazil amounted to $ 14.5 billion in 2011, and
grew on average 10.3% between 2006 and 2011. Brazil was the world's eighth largest exporter of
agricultural machinery group treated here (HS codes 8432.30, 8432.90, 8433.51, 8433.59, 8433.90
and 8436.80), with $ 655 million. Among the main destinations for Brazilian exports are Argentina,
Paraguay and the United States, totaling 54% of total exports in 2011. Brazil also exported to
countries like India and South Africa (about US$ 18 million), Sudan (almost US$ 13 million), Poland
and Germany (approximately U.S. $ 9.5 million).
In China, Brazil was the 18th supplier with $ 1.1 million - 0.3% of total imports in 2011. Japan and
the United States accounted 67% of Chinese imports. Chinese imports of agricultural machinery
from Brazil grew 19.5% between 2006 and 2011, against 30.7% average growth of imports from
other countries. Import tariffs applied to Brazil range from 5% to 10% for agricultural machines for
the products mentioned above.

Although Brazil has health certificate to export to China, only seven production units have been
authorized to export to the country. Approval of the list of qualified suppliers is made jointly by
the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply-MAPA.
The intention is to increase the number of companies qualified to export to the country.

List of Brazilian companies exporting to Asia in 2011.
Pork
Brazilian exports of pork are lower than those of beef and chicken, but still are significant, reaching
US$ 1.4 billion in 2011, which places Brazil as the world’s ninth largest exporter. Hong Kong is the
second largest market for Brazilian pork, with 23% share in total exports in 2011. Russia was the
main destination for Brazilian exports, with 28% participation. Other Brazilian markets include
Ukraine, Angola and Singapore.
Pork is the most consumed and most imported meat by the Chinese. Imports rose significantly in
2011, by 113%, compared with 2010. Between 2006 and 2011, China's imports grew on average
68% per year. The United States dominates the market, with almost 60% share of Chinese imports
in 2011. Moreover, the analysis of Chinese imports of pork shows that China has not recorded
imports of that product from Brazil between the years 2006-2011.
