Ouro Preto
Ouro Preto was first named “Vila Rica”, as a result of the
adventure of the colonizers at end of the XVII century.
They arrived in the area and began the settlement. 30
years later, the village had around 40 thousand people
running for the gold in a disordered exploration. Vila Rica
grows and the gold becomes scarce, however the city
has created a unique civilization with splendor in arts,
literature and politics.
The “Inconfidência Mineira” is the height of the political
manifestation, where priests, soldiers, poets and public
employees turn into martyrs led by Tiradentes. With the
independence, the city receives the name of Ouro Preto
and becomes the capital of Minas Gerais state until 1897.
In 1980 the city is considered Cultural Patrimony of
Mankind by UNESCO.
The beginning and the apogee of the barroco in Minas
Gerais is a phenomenon completely related to the
exploration of gold in the XVIII century. The more the
city explored the gold mines, the more the barroco
manifestation was getting richer in its forms, pomp and
in its religiosity. That has marked very strongly the society
that constituted the region.
Ouro Preto, nowadays, represents the synthesis of colonial
art, not only for its expressivity in the Brazilian culture but
also for the preservation of its cultural heap.
The highlights of Ouro Preto are: Church of St. Francis of
Assisi (a masterpiece of Brazilian religious architecture,

designed and sculpted in wood and soapstone by
Aleijadinho), Museum of the School of Mines, Church of
Our Lady of Pilar (a church that marked the culmination
of Golden Age architecture, with carved works painted
entirely in gold) and Casa dos Contos (the Mint) is a
beautiful 18th century building that houses today a
collection of gold coins of the colonial period.
To have an idea of the richness of the Ouro Preto soil we
could mention that the Imperial Topaz, one of our most
beautiful and enviable stones only found in Ouro Preto.
