Introduction
The year 2011 was a year of special importance for the relations between Brazil and
the Netherlands, it was the ‘Ano da Holanda no Brasil’, the Year of Holland in Brazil.
Brazil is an emerging world power, both politically and economically, and of growing
importance to the Netherlands. In its turn, the Netherlands are an important entry for
Brazilian exports to Europe, and the Netherlands is one of the biggest investors in
Brazil. The 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games will give an extra stimulus
to the development of Brazil. Strong growth is being measured in Brazil, specifically in
sectors in which the Netherlands excel, such as logistics, transport, fuels, chemicals,
agriculture, science and technology and design.
Both countries share special cultural ties since the times of Maurice of Nassau in the
17th century. The city of Carambeí, one of the Dutch agricultural settlements in Brazil,
celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2011. We thought these were all good reasons to
celebrate with some special events and to use our slogan for the year ‘Experimente!’
or Experience it!
On March 4th, 2011, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff signed a law into effect which
officially declared 2011 Ano da Holanda no Brasil. Later on the Government of the
State of Pernambuco held a special session and declared the Ano da Holanda no
Brasil in the State of Pernambuco.
Events took place all over Brazil but mostly in the 3 bigger cities: Brasília, São Paulo
and Rio de Janeiro and in the Dutch agricultural settlements. Some events were
organized by either the Embassy or the Consulates General, other events were
organized by third parties. Sometimes these third parties were given some of our
funds, sometimes they included the Ano da Holanda logo and a letter of support of
the Ambassador or Consul General sufficed. This booklet will give an overview of the
events that took place during this special year.
The project ‘Ano da Holanda no Brasil’ was realized with funds allocated by the Dutch
ministry of Foreign Affairs and private sponsoring. Due to the international financial crises
and ongoing budget cuts in the Netherlands, it was not possible to get substantial
funding from the Dutch government. We are pleased that it did prove possible to find
additional support from Dutch companies based in Brazil like KLM, ING, Heineken,
Hyva, Shell, RHI (Randstad) and Golden Tulip Hotels. Damen Shipyards sponsored
two specific events, the Rio International Cello Encounter and the Cebri-Clingendael
seminar which, due to the agenda of the Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs, will only be
realized in 2012. Other sponsors joined for single events like for instance the Queen’s
Day celebration and the orange bike tour.
We hope you enjoyed our ‘Ano da Holanda no Brasil’ just as much as we did. We
also hope we were able to show the Brazilians what the Netherlands has to offer
nowadays. Through this booklet you can relive the events you attended and get a
good impression of the ones you, unfortunately, had to miss out on. To use our slogan
one last time: ‘Experimente’!

Events
The following events took place during the Year of Holland in Brazil. Only
some of the events that took place in the Dutch agricultural settlements
are mentioned. For a more extensive list of their events, please visit the
respective cities’ websites.
March 2011 - Opening/Flying Artwork
17-21
The official opening of the Ano da Holanda took place on March 17th, 2011, at the
Ambassador’s residence. This was two weeks after President Dilma declared 2011 as
the Ano da Holanda no Brasil. The diplomatic community, government authorities, press,
sponsors and business contacts were invited. About 250 people attended amongst whom
some of Dutch descent. Ambassador Kees Rade gave a speech after which the year
officially got opened by everyone toasting with a glass of orange champagne. Besides a
representative from Itamaraty (the Brazilian Foreign Affairs), Mr. Luiz Carlos Hauly, secretary of
finance of the State of Paraná also gave a speech and offered the Ambassador a plaque as
a remembrance for the opening of the year. Mr. Hauly used to be the delegate for Paraná in
the Brazilian Congress, and in this capacity initiated the law about Ano da Holanda no Brasil.

From March 18th through March 20th two
aerial dancers of the Dutch acrobatic group
Flying Artwork performed two shows a night
called ‘Flying Jellyfish‘ at the Pontão do
Lago Sul in Brasília. There was supposed
to be a show on the opening night at the
residence with these same aerial dancers
doing acrobatics while hanging from a
crane, from company Hyva, with a jellyfish
hovering over them but, unfortunately, it got
cancelled because of heavy rain. Although
it was the rainy season, they got to do their
six shows at the Pontão, sometimes with a
short weather delay. The Pontão is an area
where people go to take a stroll or dine out
at fine restaurants and especially at night it
attracts a lot of people. Each show had a lot
of spectators and the artists got an immense
applause. Little children were mesmerized
by the artists and asked them for signatures
and wanted to be photographed with them.
Neso used the event to promote studying
in the Netherlands during this event.

the fair a statue got
unveiled on the occasion
of Ano da Holanda.
Mr. Wieke Piët, Consul
General at the Dutch
Consulate in São Paulo,
attended this special
occasion (first one on the

March 2011 - Contemporary jazz concerts by Michiel Borstlap
21-24
The internationally renowned Dutch contemporary jazz pianist, Mr. Michiel Borstlap, played
on the 21st of March at the opening event of Ano da Holanda in Rio de Janeiro. Previously
that day, the Dutch pianist had given a workshop to a group of children of the Favela da
Rocinha showing great interest in all their questions and motivating them not to abandon
their talent. Despite the fact that it missed the expected attention from the press, it turned
out to be an unforgettable event for the young pianists.
The 22nd Michiel arrived in Brasília and gave a concert for the public free of charge. He
played his own works on the Steinway of the Teatro Nacional and chatted a little with the
public during the concert. During the break of the concert for about 350 people, small
bottles of water were served, offered by the Dutch Embassy, in honor of World Water Day.
Each bottle had a little tag with the World Water Day logo and a small explanation, to make
people aware of this fact.
Michiel Borstlap enjoyed Brasília so much that he wanted to stay an extra day. He was
scheduled to leave for São Paulo the morning of the 23rd of March but everything got
rescheduled for the 24th. Michiel got to take an improvised tour of Brasília with some people
from the Embassy. He was crazy about the architecture of the city. At night some colleagues
took Michiel to Clube do Choro which is a famous music club for traditional “choro” in
Brasília. The famous Brazilian pianist Mr. João Nonato played with friends. In the interval
6
a meeting was arranged between the two pianists and
the owner of the club and at the end of the night Michiel
jammed a little with the drummer and got a standing
ovation.
Following his successful concert in Brasília, it was time
for Michiel Borstlap to show some of the Netherlands’
best jazz music in São Paulo. In Centro Cultural São
Paulo, one of the biggest and most important cultural
centers of the city, Michiel Borstlap played with two local
musicians for an enthusiastic audience.

April 2011 - Intermodal Trade Fair 2011
05-07
There are only three large events on the global agenda for logistics, transportation and foreign
trade: one in Europe, another in Asia and Intermodal South America in Brazil, which on the
eve of its last edition was considered the largest and most important show in the Americas,
gathering the main players, serving as a platform for launches, brand reinforcement, sales
and networking. “This year there were about 450 exhibitors, 12% more than the previous
edition, and a 20% increase in international participation,” said Mr. Joris Van Wijk, director
of UBM Brazil.
In face of the new global scenario, more
and more companies see the huge range
of commercial opportunities that only a
business exhibition can offer. Besides being
a strategic meeting place for business and
relations, decision-making professionals have
a veritable shopping center at their disposal,
full of incredible offers and opportunities. The
following Dutch companies participated at the
Dutch Pavilion at Intermodal 2011: Amsterdam
Port, Port of Rotterdam, Groningen Sea Ports,
NDL/HIDC and Zeeland Ports.

migrants of Holambra I, another Dutch agricultural settlement. The name is a contraction of
Holland, America and Brazil. This district is also known as the capital of technological agriculture.
April 2011 - Dutch video art at Virada Cultural
16-17
The Virada Cultural is Brazil’s biggest annual cultural event
attracting on average three to four million visitors. This year it
contained a special project from the Netherlands: Dutch artists
provided creative video-projections on centrally located buildings
in São Paulo during this 24 hours mega event.

April 2011 - Queen’s Day celebration
28-30
Of course Queen’s day is a yearly recurring event but this year we wanted to do something
special on the occasion of Ano da Holanda no Brasil.
São Paulo
This year’s celebration in São Paulo– with support of ABN Amro, Heineken and Perfetti van
Melle – was held at the beautiful Parque Burle Marx. In this amazing natural setting, the
official reception for the contacts of the Consulate-General was followed by an “Oranjebal”
for the Dutch community. To celebrate Queen’s Day within the context of the Ano da
Holanda, São Paulo’s landmark bridge “Ponte Octávio Frias de Oliveira” received special
orange illumination on the evening and night of April 30th.

products and held a tasting free of charge. The sponsor of the Holland Year, Heineken, was
prominently present with a green bar where people could get an ice cold Heineken draught.
Heineken also served longnecks and for this brought along friendly waiting staff dressed in
a Heineken outfit, just like at the official opening of the year.
On April 30th a reception was held for the Dutch community. Ano da Holanda was mentioned
various times in the Ambassador’s speech. The banners got a prominent place and the
guests could take home flyers and some other information about this special year.
Rio de Janeiro
Undoubtedly because of Ano da Holanda no Brasil, attendance at the Queen’s Day
reception in Rio de Janeiro exceeded the average number, with close to 200 guests
crowding the Consul General’s residence to network and enjoy typical Dutch treats. Thanks
to the generosity of Dutch dredging firm Van Oord, the Consul General was able to raffle
six tickets for the June 27 performance of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra at Rio’s
Theatro Municipal.

The friendly soccer game between
Brazil and the Netherlands was
played in Goiânia in the State
Goiás, about a 2 ½ hours’ drive
from Brasília. ArenA do Brasil,
a sister company of ArenA
Amsterdam, was organizing a

a sponsorship, wanted to partner
up with the Embassy. ArenA do
Brasil asked the Embassy to write
a few recommendation letters for
the authorities in Goiás and to
deliver a list with contact information of VIPs the Embassy wanted to invite to this event.
Game time was only scheduled three weeks before the actual event by the Brazilian Soccer
Federation, but it all worked out nicely.
On the day of the event at 9 am two deluxe touring cars departed from the Embassy with
both guests from the Embassy and, mostly, from ArenA do Brasil, a total of about a hundred
VIPs. Some people used their own transportation or were already in Goiânia like the Dutch
Minister of State, Mr. Ruud Lubbers. The guests were welcomed by a traditional Brazilian
capoeira dance group at the Centro Cultural Oscar Niemeyer in Goiânia and enjoyed
Brazilian cocktails and a lunch that consisted of typical dishes of the State Bahia and some
Dutch cheese sponsored by Unilac. The sponsors of this event got to speak during lunch;
the Ambassador was invited to say some words as well. During the interval of the game the
guests could use the VIP bar or enjoy the stadium. After a disappointing nil-nil result there
was time for one more drink and a little dance at the VIP experience tent before the touring
cars left for Brasília again.

promoted the participation of behavioral scientist Mr. Otto Adang in a conference focused
on security during the mega events taking place in Rio in 2014 (World Cup Brazil) and 2016
(Olympic Games). The conference was organized by the local Police Academy and Mr.
Adang was the only foreign speaker invited. He held both an opening and closing speech.
The event brought together representatives of the municipality and state administration,
academics of several areas related to security and the police corps. It was a small gesture
that showed Dutch expertise in an area of great relevance to Brazil the coming years.
July 2011 - Intercambio Fryslân Ferbynt

Friesland is one of the 12 provinces of the
Netherlands; it is situated in the north. The Frisian

August 2011 - Rio International Cello Encounter
08-22
This yearly initiative by British cellist Mr. David
Chew, manages to bring together the very best
of international cello music during the month of
August. Mr. Paul Comenencia, Consul General of
the Netherlands in Rio de Janeiro, invited David
Chew to set up a special program for a concert
at the official residence, sponsored by Damen
Shipyards. On the 17th of August, eighty guests
were treated to a varied musical menu that included
a Norwegian folkloric tune, Villa-Lobos hummed by
soprano Martha Herr, a sonata by Dutch composer
Willem de Fesch, an American folk song played
on an electric cello and, to round it up, a Brazilian
“chorinho” for some local flavor. Aside from Martha
Herr’s lovely voice and David Chew’s oneness with
his favorite instrument, the audience enjoyed the
mastery of Haroutune Bedelian playing his violin, the
gaiety of the Norwegian duo Isa Holmesland (violin)
and Kaja Pettersen (cello), the versatility of David
Haughey playing the electric cello, the enthusiasm
of Dutch cellists Wijnand Hulst and Artur Trajko
playing music by a countryman, and the vivacity
of Marco Pinna’s strings quintet. Time passed by
in a most enjoyable atmosphere, starting with the
warm welcome by Mr. and Mrs. Comenencia.
David Chew’s British humor surfaced as he said
that the musicians had been instructed “to play
fast” in order not to delay the cocktail. The cocktail, which however did start much later
than anticipated, was a wonderful opportunity for networking in an informal and relaxed
environment. It soon became clear that everybody enjoyed every bit of the concert.
Judging by the design of the program, the Rio International Cello Encounter carried the spirit
of “Ano da Holanda no Brasil” this year…

September 2011 - Organ concert Peter Westerbrink
01
Mr. Peter Westerbrink is one of several organists that
periodically visit Brazil at the invitation of the Instituto de Arte

famous organ in the Der Aa-Kerk in Groningen, originally built
by Arp Schnitger in 1702. In Rio de Janeiro, the concert took
place at the church of the São Bento Monastery. Since the
organ is not visible to the public, a screen was installed in
front of the altar, thus enabling all to both see and listen to
the concert. The program included Bach, Händel, Krebs,
Lefébure-Wély, Tours and Dubois. Not only is the location of Photo Release
São Bento Monastery very special, seated on a hilltop, but
the building itself is one of the most important monuments of colonial art in the city. The rich
interiors in baroque and rococo style are a cultural, touristic and religious reference.

November 2011 - Launch ‘Atlas of the Coast of Brazil 1643-1649’
30
During their investigation on the
rich period of Dutch Brazil in the
17th century, Professors Cristina
Ferrão and José Paulo Monteiro
Soares came across a volume
filed under code 4.VEL.Y in the
National Archive of The Hague. Its
title was “Brief Description of the
Brazilian Coast and some Other
Places”. Besides the exquisite
iconographic illustrations, almost
nothing was known about
the atlas, but its anonymous
authorship and the images which
resembled the Coast of Brazil.
Three images of the atlas were
published in the edition “Route of
an Unknown Brazil” edited by Kapa Editorial, in 2007. After this the professors were, finally, able
to persuade their Dutch colleague, Professor B.N. Teensma from the University of Leiden, that
the effort of translating the book would pay off, even if he considered the work too technical.
The transcription work began, from Old Dutch in Gothic manuscript. There were 65 folios (130
pages), 12 blank pages, 73 with texts and 45 manuscript and watercolor maps. After research on
every aspect relevant to historical investigation, comprehensive assessment and paleographic
comparisons, experts came to the conclusion that the maps had been made by the joint efforts
of hydrographer Mr. Jan Lichthart and geographer Mr. Georg Marcgrave. The launch of the book
in Rio de Janeiro repeated the successful launch it had in the Netherlands with the presence of
Professor Teensma and Ms. Mara de Groot from the National Archive.

Communication and Press
Communication agency, SA Comunicação, based in São Paulo, was hired to help
communicate our messages and events to the press and therefore the Brazilian people.
They wrote press releases with our input, set up interviews with journalists and made
sure we got the press clippings of everything related to Ano da Holanda no Brasil that
appeared in the papers, both hard copy and online. SA dealt with the questions we
got from the press at certain events. During the year 124 articles in newspapers, 125
articles on websites and 8 articles in magazines were published. Also the Ano dan
Holanda got coverage in 15 television pieces and 5 radio broadcasts. SA also helped
design banners that we took everywhere to get immediate Ano da Holanda exposure,
as well as various flyers, invitations and posters that we needed. SA Comunicação was
chosen because they have representations in 2 of the 3 bigger cities in Brazil.
The company Active4 in São Paulo was hired to manage the content on the Ano
da Holanda website www.anodaholandanobrasil.com.br. The calendar with events for
2011 was easily accessible through the website and much more facts about the year
could be found on this website. Between March and December the website attracted
more than 14.000 visitors, which is around 1.500 visitors per month or 34 unique
visitors a day. Active4 also helped us with some graphic designs, for instance some
invitations and this booklet have been designed by Active 4.
The website:
Social media like a friends’ page on Facebook and a group on LinkedIn were also
used. Whenever an event came up we tried to have it included in local free ‘what-to-do’
papers. A good example of this is ‘The Papagaio’ in Brasília. This is a weekly electronic
newsletter from the American Embassy spread within the diplomatic community. It is
one of the best read weekly’s in Brasília amongst diplomats. We also used the monthly
Brasília Agenda with things to do in the capital. In Rio de Janeiro the newsletter of the
Dutch Club was used to communicate events and messages.
The articles in the press also lead to requests for television and radio interviews with the
ambassador, which were afterwards put on the website and the social media. This lead
to a ‘snowball-effect’ that the Ano da Holanda was known to a larger crowd. The Ano
da Holanda was also adopted by other initiatives, like the friendly match between Brazil
and Holland on 4 June, 2011. ArenA do Brasil, a sister company of ArenA Amsterdam,
organized a VIP event for the occasion and used the logo on the shirts. Consequently,
the whole stadium knew it was the Year of Holland in Brazil.
In May a selected group of journalists travelled to the Netherlands to participate in the
Influentials Program of the Agentschap NL. This resulted in a better understanding

Conclusion/evaluation
‘2011 Ano da Holanda no Brasil’ has come to an end. Our aim was to further
strengthen the already strong ties between our two nations and looking back
we can say that it was a very successful year. The relatively small amount of
money realized so much more than we ever could have anticipated when we
started making plans for this special year. The concept ‘Year of Holland in
Brazil’ really works. It gave some of our national artists that extra little push to
travel to a faraway destination and helped with getting their funding together. In
Brazil it opened more doors for Holland to expose our culture in various ways.
Business partners got linked at various seminars that got organized especially
for the occasion, expertise got shared and already new partnerships are
taking shape.
Because resources were limited we every now and then had to make difficult
choices not to participate in certain wonderful events and in one case even
had to cancel at a very late notice. On top of the events that carried the Ano
da Holanda sticker, so much more Dutch events took place in Brazil. There
are for instance the performances by world renowned DJs Armin van Buuren
and Tiësto and the ever charming saxophonist Candy Dulfer.
Although we did not always get press attention specifically for Ano da Holanda,
we generated a lot of press attention for the Netherlands in general and some
specific topics. With all the big events coming up in Brazil we are already
teaming up to contribute to making all events into a great success.
A big thank you goes out to everyone who took part, however big or small, in
Ano da Holanda no Brasil.

We are very thankful for our Ano da Holanda no Brasil corporate sponsors as well as
the sponsors who got on board for a specific events. The sponsors for the year have
been contributing in three different sponsorship levels:
Gold sponsor which equals 100.000 BRL: KLM and ING
Silver sponsor which equals 50.000 BRL: Shell, Heineken and Hyva
Bronze sponsor which equals 10.000 BRL: Randstad and Golden Tulip Hotels
Other sponsors that we could not have done without are:
Fugro, Houston Bikes, ArenA do Brasil, Friesland Campina, Van Kleef, Unilac, ABNAmro,
Van Oord, Perfetti van Melle and Pernod Ricard, slager Graumans. Heineken and
Damen Shipyards also sponsored some extra events on top of the amounts donated
mentioned above.
We would like to stress the fact that some events were only allocated some of the Ano
da Holanda money and the rest was funded through a third party. Various Dutch cultural
institutions like the Fonds Podiumkunsten and Central de Cultura program participated,
as well as Brazilian Cultural Institutions.
