Madeira Island Ultra Swim (MIUS)
September, 2nd to 7th
Madeira will host another edition of the Madeira Ultra Swim, the most extensive of the world swimming
crossings comprising a total of 22.7 nautical miles (42 km).
Starting at Porto Santo island, and finishing in Praínha, in Ponta de São Lourenço (Madeira), this race will
gather the participation of a maximum of 25 athletes in a route connecting the marine protected reserves
of the two islands.
Jesus and Holy Sacrament Festivity | Ponta Delgada
September, 5th and 6th
This is one of the largest pilgrimages in Madeira. Hundreds of people fill the village of Ponta Delgada,
arriving from all over the island, transforming this religious event into a feast truly rich in tradition and
festivity.
Grape and Farmer’s Festival | Porto da Cruz
September, 5th and 6th
Organised by Casa do Povo of Porto da Cruz, the Grape and Farmer’s Festival is a tribute to the village’s
tradition of wine making. The event main’s highlight is a street pageant that brings together many of this
villages cultural and ethnographic aspects.
Funchal Junior Open and Madeira International Tennis Open | Funchal
September, 11th to 13th
The sports hall of the Bartolomeu Perestrelo School will host the Funchal Junior & Cadet Open and the
Madeira International Table Tennis Open 2015, an event part of the World Junior Circuit of the International
Table Tennis Federation.
On the 8th of September, the 17th edition of the Madeira International Table Tennis Open will also be taking
place.
Our Lady of Piety Festivity| Caniçal
September, 12th and 13th
The village of Caniçal, located on the eastern most part of Madeira Island, is the scene of one of the most
peculiar tribute in honour of the local fishermen patron saint – Our Lady of Piety.
This festivity starts on Saturday, time when the image of Our Lady Piety is carried out in a procession by
many pilgrims who join in this religious act, from the Chapel of Our Lady of Piety, to Caniçal main parish
church, where its placed during the remaining of the day.
On the following day, Sunday, and after a liturgical ceremony pilgrims take part in a boat procession after
which the statue of the virgin is placed once again in the chapel.

Columbus Festival | Porto Santo
September, 17th to 19th
The island of Porto Santo hosts a historical recreation in honour of the famous merchant and navigator
Christopher Columbus, who lived on this island and married the daughter of the first Captain Donnee,
Bartolomeu Perestrelo.
This medieval festival includes an extensive program comprised by a wide range of musical and theatre
shows, as well as exhibitions and parades evoking the age of the Portuguese Discoveries.
The event is promoted to pay tribute to the time when the navigator lived in the archipelago, around 1478,
and Funchal was involved in sugar trade business.

31st Pêro Festival | Ponta do Pargo
September, 19th and 20th
The Casa do Povo da Ponta do Pargo promotes this rural event in collaboration with the Regional
Secretariat for Environment and Natural Resources and the Municipality of Calheta, bringing together
numerous farmers from several neighbouring villages, turning this festivity into a very lively festival along
with the typical food and drink stalls.
III Madeira Wine Open Golf Competition | Funchal
September 20th
The Palheiro Golf course will be the centre stage for another edition of the “Madeira Wine Open Golf
Competition”, an initiative directed at Golf lovers, which has been arousing the interest of many national
and international players in the “4 ball better ball” modality.
This tournament also includes a wine tasting event, promoted in partnership with Madeira Tourism and the
Wine Institute.
Funchal Move Week
September, 20th to 27th
The Now We Move campaign is a European project coordinated by the International Sport and Culture
Association (ISCA), in partnership with the European Cyclists’ Federation, which has been responsible for
this initiative over recent years.
The Madeira Sports for All Association (AMDpT), the Funchal Local Government and the Regional
Department of Youth and Sport (DRJD) have joined this initiative, challenging professional and amateur
sportspeople alike to participate in a wide range of suggested activities, from a triathlon to karate and a
night-time jogging event.

39th Book Fair | Funchal
September, 25th to October, 4th
The Avenida Arriaga will be the set of the annual Book Fair, a cultural event which will involve most of
Madeira's bookshops and some Portuguese publishing houses.
This initiative is being run by Funchal Municipal Council and includes a diverse range of activities, from
conferences, book launches, concerts and exhibitions which will take place in the Auditorium of the

25th Cider Festival | Santo da Serra
September, 26th and 27th
The village of Santo da Serra promotes a tribute to the secular tradition that is behind the manufacture of
apple cider, one of the main agricultural products of this area – the apple.
The official programme includes several leisure activities, in particular a small ethnographic parade,
preceded by the traditional foot pressing.
World Tourism Day Celebration | Madeira
September, 27th
Madeira Islands take part in the World Tourism Day celebration, this year under the theme “One Billion
Tourists, One Billion Opportunities”
The official programme includes several cultural activities held in Funchal city centre, such as free admission
to some museums and gardens. In addition, tourists will be greeted with flowers and giveaways upon their
arrival at Madeira’s International Airport and also at some official tourist offices.
Madeira Uphill 2000 | Funchal
September,7th
Madeira Uphill 2000 is an athletic event of an international scope, which will be hosted for the first time in
the city of Funchal and which consecrates the athletes of many countries.
The circuit has a unique scenic frame and is ideal for long distance runners. The race will start at Avenida do
Mar and finishes at Pico do Areeiro, where the finish line is set at 1,821 metres altitude.
