A EXPRESSÃO DO GÊNERO NAS REPRESENTAÇÕES DE CLIENTES HOSPITALIZADOS
SOBRE O CUIDAR E O CUIDADO DE ENFERMAGEM
The gender expression in the hospitalized patients' representations about
caring and the nursing care

RESUMO
Este estudo de natureza qualitativa objetivou identificar as representações sociais do
feminino e do masculino no cuidar e no cuidado hospitalar; e discutir as suas implicações
no cuidado de enfermagem. Desenvolveu-se com treze mulheres e treze homens
internados em um hospital do Rio de Janeiro. Os nexos entre o conceito de gênero
e as representações dos clientes sobre o cuidar e o cuidado de enfermagem buscaram
compreender e explicar como o gênero se expressa na ação (cuidar) e no objeto da
prática do enfermeiro (cuidado), na representação dos sujeitos. O feminino e o masculino
no cuidar e no cuidado se evidenciaram nas expressões afetivas associadas ao feminino,
como o carinho e a emoção; e atributos masculinos como a força e a racionalidade.
A expressão do gênero se evidenciou também na tipificação de alguns cuidados, tidos
como femininos, ligados à produção da beleza – marca da feminilidade do corpo.
Os resultados indicaram cuidados necessários para atender a expressão feminina e
masculina da pessoa hospitalizada. As representações sociais do cuidar e do cuidado de
enfermagem mostraram que o cuidado, para ser holístico e não somente biológico, não
pode desconsiderar ou desvalorizar as marcas do gênero impressas e expressas no sujeito.

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study, which is of a qualitative character, was to identify the
social representations of the feminine and the masculine in caring and in the
hospital care, and to discuss its implications in the nursing care. It was developed
with thirteen women and thirteen men hospitalized in Rio de Janeiro. The
connections between the gender concept and the patients’ representations about
caring and the nursing care were used as a mean to understand and explain how
gender expresses itself in the action (caring) and in the nurse’s practice object (care),

according to the subjects’ representation. The feminine and the masculine in caring and
the care became evident in the affectionate expressions attached to the feminine, such as
tenderness and emotion, and to the masculine attributes, such as force and rationality.
The gender expression also became evident in the typifying of some kinds of care considered
as feminine, associated to the beauty production – a mark of body femininity. The results
indicated necessary care to provide for the hospitalized person’s feminine and masculine
expression. The social representations of caring and the nursing care showed that, in
order to be holistic, and not only biological, care cannot fail to consider or to give value
to the male and female marks imprinted or expressed in the subject.
