In Carruba and Michtchenko (2007) we introduced a
new method for asteroid family determination where
asteroid families were identified in the proper
frequency domain (n,g,g+s) (where n is the meanmotion, and g and s are the secular frequencies of
the longitude of pericenter and node, respectively)
rather than in the proper element domain (a,e,sin(i))
(semi-major axis, eccentricity and sine of inclination).
A shortcoming of that approach was that, since the
proper frequency g (and in a lesser manner s) are
strongly perturbed in regions of low-order meanmotion and secular resonances, it may fail to
recognize asteroids in these regions as family
members.
In this work we improve our techniques for reliable
identifying family members in such regions. We also
explore in more detail how asteroid families found in
the frequency domain interact with non-linear secular
resonances and why our method allows to connect
asteroids that drifted far in mean-motion or secular
resonances as family members.
For this purpose, we regularize the dependence of
the g frequency on the n frequency (Vesta family) or
on the eccentricity (Hansa family) and introduce new
distance metric in the frequency space (Baptistina
family).
Our new approaches allow to recognize as family
members objects that were lost with previous
methods, while keeping all the advantages of the
Carruba and Michtchenko (2007) approach.
