WE ARE GLOBAL
THINKING AS LOCALS
Since our 30th anniversary is just around the corner, we are
proud of the transformation experienced by our company in the
last few years and of the grounds set forth to become a global
and benchmark engineering company for our clients.
Brazil, North America and Spain have been three axles providing
the backbone of GPO’s activities during 2014. We have increased
our income and grown with major projects, such as the design
of different stretches of the Highway 407 ETR in Canada, which
is at the moment the world’s biggest infrastructure under
concession, or the new Line 6 of São Paulo’s Metro in Brazil. The
consolidation of these three markets, so important for our group,
has been accompanied by a bet to continue growing in countries
where transport infrastructure could be the driver of growth in
the next few years, such as Colombia and Peru, and where GPO
Group has presence already.
2014 has been a year of changes and new incorporations. We
have modified our name to become GPO Group, encouraged
by the company transformation that we have been undergoing
in the last few years, creating or incorporating consulting,
engineering and architecture companies, which act under
different brands, depending on the country or area where they
operate. Around midyear, we added the Spanish company
Ingeniería de Transportes y Trenes (2IT) to our group.
2IT’s specialisation in railway consulting, beyond infrastructure
design, has enabled us to take a leap in terms of quality and
quantity within the area and will be essential in the years to
come, since we are convinced that we can offer our clients a
comprehensive service that covers the infrastructure’s whole life
cycle.
Our future rests on remaining close to our clients, continuing
with our effort of the last few years to enlarge the company,
and following the plan we have set to grow in new markets and
sectors. We want to be global, thinking as locals.

The year 2014 has entailed a step higher towards
positioning GPO Group within the international
scope and has been the year in which the group was
restructured to meet the challenges awaiting in the
future.
The new structure is led by the GPO Group holding and
encompasses each of the companies that, during the
last few years, have joined the group either being set
up or through acquisition. The consolidation of the
brand GPO as a group of consulting companies related
to transport, architecture, industry and environment
allows us to unite teams that represent us in different
countries.
The incorporation of the company Ingeniería de
Instalaciones y Trenes (2IT) to this new structure is,
without a doubt, the Group’s most significant event
in 2014. With a deeply consolidated international
portfolio and a catalogue of railway services fully
complementing our activities, 2IT has reinforced
GPO’s core business within the transport consulting
area.
This new acquisition allows us to cover the integral life
cycle of railway transport: not only do we participate
in planning and designing the infrastructure, but
we also provide consulting services in rolling stock,
systems, commissioning of new lines, maintenance
management, training operation personnel and
auditing the safety of the different components.
Apart from this activity, completely transverse to the
rest of the group’s companies, 2IT has provided new
geographical markets to operate, such as Argentina,
Qatar or Turkey, where we have been working this
year.

The year 2014 has also entailed the consolidation
and growth of the group’s companies, mainly in South
America. SISTRAN, Brazilian subsidiary based in Sao
Paulo, has met its expansion goals in the country by
opening new offices in Belem and Maceió, and has
considerably increased its income, thus consolidating
a stable portfolio in the transport and automotive
sector. The group is specially proud of the R+D
projects generated by SISTRAN, taking advantage
of the possibilities new technologies offer, such as
BIG DATA, to re-invent mobility studies related to
collective transport and providing them with a power
and reliability unthinkable with the use of traditional
methodology.

GPO Colombia has been another of the group’s strong
bets in 2014. The Colombian subsidiary has begun its
second year of life with great strength, and we have
achieved a stable structure composed by a solid and
diverse portfolio of future projects.
We have also taken advantage of the 2014 to
continue planning the future of the group. Based on
our strategic plan, we are after those markets we want
to strengthen in 2015. In this regard, we continue
betting for the American continent as the Group’s
main driving force of growth, investing in countries
where our presence is already significant, such as
Brazil, Colombia or Peru, and expecting an important
qualitative leap in an important market such as North
America.

value people, encouraging their training, preserving
their safety and health and aiming at continuous
quality improvement. The group promotes keys in the
social field to encourage respect in all actions within

GPO Group promotes academic and cultural
education of its employees, offering specialization
courses mainly in the areas of design, planning and
environment. In addition, those with most seniority
are assisted to supplement their training with postgraduate courses and junior employees to conclude
their university courses, after a period of practices.
We promote not only intellectual development, but
also physical. GPO Group makes posture-correction
experts available to advise and assist employees to
improve their posture and exercise while they are at
work. The group also supports participation in sport
events, such as races, soccer games and other sports
of interest.
In 2014, GPO Group has established connections and
actions with the following entities:
• Difusión Banco de Recursos (Resource Allocation

in terms of corporate social responsibility is
donating furniture and IT material to said entity,
which is then in charge of assigning this kind of
resources to social organizations for those most
in need.
• Ningún niño sin juguete (No kids without toys)
- Since 2013, GPO Group collaborates by
earmarking part of the returns arising from bank
institutions for toys that are delivered to hospitals
(Hospital de Nens in Barcelona and Hospital Niño
Jesús in Madrid) during the Christmas period.
• Food Bank. Operación Kilo (Kilo operation) GPO Group is involved with the Food Bank since
2011 and promotes the Kilo Operation intended
to collect durable food. This year, food has been
delivered to the Food Bank in Madrid and to social
canteens in Barcelona.
• Blood donation campaign - Annually, we promote
a blood donation campaign, setting up a
specialised team in GPO’s offices.
• Aura Foundation - Since 2012, GPO Group
collaborates with Aura Foundation, social entity
devoted to social and employment inclusion of
people with intellectual disabilities. GPO promotes
the entity’s activities (draws, excursions, etc.)
and voluntary donations. It is worth noting that

Enlargement project of the Highway 407 East
Ferrovial Agroman entrusted the team integrated by
GPO with the design of the enlargement of the highway
407 ETR (Express Toll Route) in Canada, deemed as
one of the world’s biggest road infrastructures under
concession.
Ontario’s highway 407 East (407E) is an express toll
motorway that surrounds the Greater Toronto Area
(GTA), going through Burlington, Oakville, Mississauga,
Brampton, Vaughan, Markham and Pickering towards
the north of Toronto, with the aim of reducing traffic
from highway 401. In June 2014, there was an average
of 350,000 circulating cars per day. The Highway 407
East constitutes a 65-km enlargement of the current
407, going beyond Brock Road, the construction of
which is planned in two stages.
30.
The project entails the construction of 16.5 km of new
highway, with certain stretches comprising up to five
lanes per direction, with more than 36 km of branches
and access roads, and 4 new links. The alignment
has been designed taking into account aesthetic
and environmental matters, including gardened
embankments, rainwater sewerage pools, as well as
a system of drains and sewers for urban roads.
The 407 ETR is pioneer in the implementation of the
most modern toll systems, equipped with cameras
and licence-recognition transponders, which replace
traditional toll booths.

MÁLAGA, SPAIN
L1 and L2 of Málaga Metro
Málaga metro is an infrastructure under concession,
promoted by Ferrocarriles de la Junta de Andalucía
(Railroads of the Andalusian Regional Government)
and managed by the concessionaire Metro de Málaga.
In July 2014, the two first lines were opened, which
account for 81% of the planned network, with a
total length of 12 km and 17 stations - stops, and an
investment of over 600 million euros.
2iT Ingeniería has been the company selected to
support the concessionaire throughout the start-up
of the line, designed as light metro. This project has
allowed us to open up most of the wide array of railway
consulting services that 2IT has been rendering over
the last few years, as compared to other start-ups in
Spain, such as Seville metro and Saragossa and Jaen’s
trams.
Our services have encompassed aspects as diverse
as inspection and handover of rolling stock, empty
running tests, training of engine drivers and future
trainers, start-up of control centre and training of their
operators, design of protocols and Independent Safety
Assessment (ISA) and maintenance documents, and
depot management. All this is materialised by creating
work teams at the client’s premises, present until the
new infrastructure reached full operating capability.
Upon completion of the whole network, scheduled by
2017, Málaga metro will be 14.8 km long, will have 23
stations and will cater to 20.7 million passengers per
year.

SISTRAN accepted the challenge. Our vast experience

have been carrying out in the field, has allowed us to turn
this Urban Mobility plan into a referent, which we believe
will set a technological trend in the next few years.
SÃO LUÍS, BRAZIL
Mobility Plan | Improvements in Public Transport
The city of São Luís, capital of the state of Maranhão,
Brazil, raised the need to modernise its entire public
transport system, improving the frequencies of the
existing bus lines, introducing changes in rate policy
42.
and implementing an intelligent transporting system
(ITS) to enhance the operation of the whole network
and offer better services to citizens.
GPO Group | Annual Report 2014
The great technological development introduced in this
study is the generation of origin-destination matrices by
massively processing data obtained from mobile phones,
GPO Group | Annual Report 2014
commonly known as BIG DATA. The Mobility Plan of the
city of Maranhão has been the first project in Brazil,
and one of the first in the entire world, to use the data
registered in telephone antennas to locate the movement
of people within a city.
Thanks to the agreement carried out with VIVO, company
of the TELEFONICA group, which is the data supplier, GPO
Group has managed to make this technology be officially
recognised in this kind of public transport planning
studies.

BARCELONA, SPAIN
D-HUB Barcelona
BIMSA, public company that manages
the works of the Barcelona City Hall,
entrusted the consortium of which
GPO Ingeniería y Arquitectura is part to
carry out the Construction Management
and Management of the execution of
Barcelona’s Centre del Disseny works,
also known as D-HUB, located in the
Plaça de les Glòries of said city.
The D-HUB Museum is another
architectural landmark in Barcelona, a
city that stands out due to the quality of its
construction and its modernist heritage of
historic value. MBM Arquitectos’ design,
comprising a central structure, built
with post stressed reinforced concrete
and a large-sized 35-m cantilever over
one of Barcelona’s main road accesses,
represented a challenge as far as
construction is concerned.
46.
From its office in Barcelona, GPO
participated as works execution manager,
controlling quality and constructive
details. It also acted as Construction
Manager, assisting the property in
tendering processes and coordinating all
stakeholders involved to deliver a new
emblematic building for the city, which
will be part of Barcelona’s new entrance
gate to be set at the Plaça de les Glòries
in the future.
The inauguration of the Design Museum
by the end of 2014, with over 70,000
pieces and a data base of 22,000
documents, marked the end of a long
period of efforts and dedication from our
team.
