CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS
Over the past years my area of research has focused on protozoan deepsea organisms from
high productivity areas. Currently, the work is focused on foraminiferal community attributes in
relation to environmental gradients in the Portuguese canyon systems:a comparison between
within canyon vs adjacent slopes, between canyons. This is done by studying the abundance,
taxonomic composition, diversity, vertical distribution and live:dead ratios of foraminifera from
multicores. As many species found are undescribed, taxonomical analysis including
morphological, ultrastructural and molecular characterization of species is an essential part of
the work prior to biological and ecological characterization. The second main aim is to relate
how the above parameters relate to environmental settings, in particular oxygen
concentrations and productivity. The third aim is to study xenophyophores that occur in high
abundances in the Nazaré canyon.
OTHER RESEARCH INTERESTS
New areas of interest:
- deepsea benthic foraminifera from seamounts and tectonic faults
- barcoding of benthic foraminifera from the Portuguese Margin
- benthic foraminifera associated to organic enriched environments from shallow waters
- benthic foraminifera from tropical latitudes
- Benthic protists from the Arabian Sea (Aranda da Silva, 2005)
- ICZM (Integrated Coastal Zone Management) (Aranda da Silva, 2002)
- Meiofauna distribution from Sandy beaches (Aranda da Silva, 1998 BSc thesis)
