ENGLISH-PORTUGUESE EQUIVALENTS OF FORESTRY AND CONSERVATTON
TERMS
John K. Francis
FOREWORD
Signs of deterioration of the global environment and threatened destruction of the vast
Amazon forest have stirred a call for action.
Conservationists have always been concerned
about the tropical forests; now funds are being
made available for increased work on problems
in the region. Brazilian scientists struggle to
communicate with colleagues in the rest of the
world while scientists from other areas are discovering that to work effectively in Brazil, one
must speak Portuguese. One must also be able
to read Portuguese to benefit from the local technical literature.
English-speaking scientists have not prepared themselves particularly well in other languages. It was presumed by many that anything
important would be published in English, or at
least it would be translated into English. Also,
Portuguese is generally given a priority somewhat below Spanish, French, and German in
forestry and conservation literature, thus few
scientists make an effort to study it. Portuguesespeaking scientists and conservationists, on the
other hand, are handicapped by limited literature in their own language and a technical vocabulary that is not yet fully developed.
The International Institute of Tropical Forestry of the U.S. Department of Agriculture,
Forest Service has been mandated to carry on
cooperative research and technology transfer in
the Amazon Basin. This dictionary of forestry
and conservation terms has been prepared to aid
in communications with our Portuguese-speaking colleagues and for the benefit of others facing similar language barriers.
Forestry and conservation are very broad
fields, which include many subfields that have
large and detailed vocabularies. I have attempted
to collect the most common and useful of these
terms and determine the equivalencies in English
and Portuguese. In many cases, several terms
denote the same concept. They will be listed
separately, alphabetically in the primary language (left hand column), and in series in the
secondary language (right hand column) with the
most common term placed first. In a few cases,
where specific terms do not exist for a concept
in the secondary language, a definition is given.
Definitions are not included in the primary language list. Foreign words (borrowed from another language), which are used to denote certain concepts in technical literature in Portuguese, will be given in quotations. Foreign words
that have become a part of the language, especially where Portuguese spelling has been applied, are listed without distinction.
Several sources were used to collect the
terms used in this publication. The glossaries and
dictionaries used are referenced below. The majority of the terms included were collected from

technical literature published in Portuguese; that
is, the context of their use suggested their equivalence in the English language. Additional terms
were defined through personal communications
with Portuguese-speaking professionals.

TERMOS EQUIVALENTES EM SILVICULTURA E CONSERVACAO PORTUGUfiSINGL&
John K. Francis
Unidos tern entre suas metas o desenvolvimento
de pesquisas em coopera@ e a transferencia
de tecnologia na bacia amazonica. Preparei este
dicionkio de termos tecnicos em silvicultura e
conservacao para facilitar a comunica@o corn
nossos colegas que falam portugues e para
beneficiar outras pessoas que estao enfrentando
barreiras de idioma similares.
APRESENTACiiO
OS sinais de deteriora@o do ambiente global e ameacas da destrui@o de vasta floresta
amazonica tern provocado urn movimento em
dire@0 a acao. OS conservacionistas sempre se
preocuparam corn a floresta tropical; agora a
disponibilidade de fundos estao possibilitando
urn trabalho mais abrangente na regiao. OS
pesquisadores brasileiros est5o lutando para
melhorar a comunicac2o corn seus colegas em
outras partes do mundo. Estes, por sua vez, estao
descobrindo que para trabalhar eficazmente no
Brasil, C precise saber falar portugues e que para
ter acesso a literatura tecnica local, devem saber l&la.
Pesquisadores da lingua inglesa usualmente
nao tern tido urn born preparo em linguas
extrangeiras.
vocabulario tecnico q u e a i n d a n5o estri
completamente desenvolvido.
A silvicultura e a conserva@o sao areas de
estudo muito amplas estan.do ligadas a urn
vocabul&rio amplo e precise ern suas muitas subareas. Para atingir O S propositos d e s t a
publica@o, eu procurei coletar OS termos mais
comums e titeis e determinar OS equivalentes nos
dois idiomas. Em muitos cases, verificei que
existem varies termos para descrever o mesmo
conceito.
incluem definicoes. Quando Lermos extrangeiros
Go usadas para denominar certos conceitos em
portugues, OS mesmos estao colocados entre
aspas. Por outro lado, termos extrangeiros que
se incorporaram ao idioma portugues,
especialmente quando uma grafia propria se
aplica, s20 apresentados sem distinsao.

glossaries e dicionarios foram valiosos

dos termos incluidos foram coletados da

context0 do uso destes termos sugeriu o seu

foram definidos em contatos pessoais corn
