From 15 October 2010, a new electronic toll system will apply to all vehicles driving on
some specific motorway sections (Scut’s) in Portugal. Toll sections are signposted.
There are neither barriers nor tollbooths. The toll is calculated according to the
vehicle’s category. Before driving on toll roads, the vehicle must be equipped with an
onboard unit. Registration for the onboard unit depends on the selected way of
payment.

Motorcycles and vehicles – if the height measured vertically from the first axis is
below 1.10m (with or without trailer);
2
Vehicles with two axles - if the height measured vertically from the first axis is
equal or above 1.10 m;
3
Vehicles with three axles - if the height measured vertically from the first axis is
equal to or above 1.10 m;
4
Vehicles with four or more axles - if the height measured vertically from the first
axis is equal to or above 1.10 m.

How this will work?
Payment can only be made electronically by means of an onboard unit:
•
Temporary device (DT): This device is suitable for foreign-registered vehicles in
cases of a short duration stay in Portugal.
•
Official Toll Collection (DECP) device: A formal contract with a tolling collection
company must be established. This device is suitable for foreign-registered vehicles
in cases of long duration stays in Portugal.
How to pay?
Pre-payment (for DT device): the device is issued to the driver by way of a rental
scheme; the driver will only pay a rental value in accordance with the time of use. This
device will be linked to an automatic payment system (debit or credit) or alternatively,
through the pre-payment system, with a minimum pre-payment of 50 or 100 euros.
Pre-Payment (for DECP device): the driver must pay for this device (+/- 27 euros).
This device will be associated with an automatic payment system (debit or credit) or
alternatively, through the pre-payment system, with a minimum pre-payment of 50 or
100 euros, depending on whether it is a light or heavy vehicle).
Important: The pre-payment is valid for 90 days and must be renewed; otherwise the
equipment will be invalid.
How to purchase this equipment?
This equipment can be purchased in service stations and other places where tolling
options are offered.
Those who do not comply with these rules will be fined.
