Subject: VODACOM Supports Farmers in Vilanculos
Vodacom Launches Phase II of the Project to Support Farmers in Vilanculos
As part of its activities in support of sustainable development programs in communities,
Vodacom recently supported 12 Farmer’s associations in the city of Vilanculos. The
support consisted in delivering little more than a ton of seeds of vegetable Lettuce,
Onion, Tomato Pepper, Carrot, Cabbage, Green Beans, Reno potatoes and cabbage.
The actual delivery took place on July 3rd in Vilanculos and was attended by the
President of the Municipal Council of that city.
This project takes place for the second consecutive year and aims to encourage the
production of vegetables for self-subsistence in and also boost the production
capacity to supply the local market, in order to raise income levels of associations.
In the first phase that took place in the 2009/2010 agricultural season, Vodacom
offered 1054 kg of seeds of various vegetables to 330 farmers.
In this second phase, benefited directly about 400 farmers families grouped in nine
associations and indirectly around 2,000 families who may acquire production in local
markets.
Apart from providing seeds, Vodacom, in partnership with the City Council of
Vilanculos, also financed the training of the farmers in techniques in conservation
agriculture and business management.

"For us, this initiative is not simply donating of seeds to communities in need. More than
that, it represents our commitment to empower them with the tools they need to
maximize their income and thereby make them self-sustaining. It is our contribution to
sustainable development, "explains José dos Santos, President of the Executive Council
of Vodacom.
"Among the 400 farmers benefitting from the initiative, women appear in greater
numbers, thus creating a balance of gender.
"The appreciation of women is also an objective of this initiative, since it plays an
important role in agriculture", says José dos Santos.
By this project, the farmers associations of Mangalisse, Madenguele, Chirrocha,
Nhaucate, Nhamalonza, Inhajusse, Nhauhacha, Mahangue, Chichome, Nzowela,
Nhaucane, Njamaura, Nhamuchichi and Nhamacamba, were covered.
