Ultimate Frisbee: The Game
Ultimate is an exciting
team sport played by tens
of thousands of people the
world over. It is played
between 2 teams of 7
people on a rectangular
pitch, with end zones for
scoring at both ends.
Played with a flying disc,
the object of the game is
to score points by catching
the disc in your opponents‟ end zone.
Ultimate began in the late
80‟s with no referees, very
few rules, and emphasis
on „Spirit of the
Game‟. Players are re-
quired to be honest and
respectful of the rules and
of other players. Today,
the game has evolved into
a highly competitive sport,
with a many teams competing at the international
level and many different
tactics being introduced.
Despite competition being
very high, and the sport
being both physically and
mentally demanding,
„Spirit of the Game‟ is still
a fundamental part of Ultimate and winning the
„Most Spirited Team‟
award at tournaments is
very highly regarded, both
for a group of friends
coming together to play in
the park as for players
participating at the World
Championships.
In July 2008, the first annual beach tournament on
the island of Xefina was a
huge success, creating
interest in the game here.
Players came from S. Africa, Swaziland, of course
a strong contingent from
Mozambique. Because it

2008, over 1600 athletes participated in over 70 different
teams, the largest number of
teams yet. This is an indication of how Ultimate is growing all around the world and
how more countries are coming to recognize Ultimate as a
competitive sport.

Ultimate Frisbee: Mozambique Style
A mix of both foreigners
and Mozambicans, young
and old, men and women,
play Ultimate in Maputo.
They come together on
the beach or at a park.
Mozambique has been
represented at three international Ultimate tournaments in South Africa,
proudly bringing home the
Spirit of the Game award.
December 2008
was such a great success,
the demand is even higher
for a bigger and better
Xefina tournament in
2009.
The Association of Ultimate in Mozambique
(AUM) is in the process of
being registered and the
game has also been introduced to the Ministry of
Youth and Sports in order
to be recognized as an
official sport and introduced in schools and communities.
Beginners, Ultimate Gods,
Travelling Disc Players,
Lovers of fun in the sun.. You
are all invited to participate!
The Second Annual Xefina
Beach Tournament is
scheduled for 01-02 May
2009. The first tournament
saw 50 players scrambling
on the beach of Xefina and
Costa de Sol. The format
was a “hat” tournament,
where individual players
registered and were placed
on different teams based on
the experience and skill
level of each player to ensure equal play for all
teams. The same format
will be repeated for the
Second Annual tournament
with the demand even
higher this year. A South
African player called Xefina “the most awesome
venue for a beach tournament,” and everyone is
already signing up for the
next one!

Voando na Nossa Terra Gloriosa
Ultimate Frisbee: O Jogo ...
Ultimate é um jogo d‟equipa feito
por milhões de população. Este, é
feito entre 2 equipas de 7 pessoas
num campo rectangular, em zonas
de pontuação de cada campo do
adversário. É também jogado por
um disco voador; o objectivo do jogo
é marcar pontos em pegar o disco na
zona de pontuação da equipe
adversária.
O Ultimate começou nos finais dos
anos 80 sem árbitros, poucas regras
e ênfase no “espírito do jogo”. Os
jogadores são obrigados a ser
honestos e respeitarem as regras e
aos outros colegas. Hoje, o jogo
progrediu tornando-se num desporto
de alta competitividade, com várias
equipas a nível internacional e
muitas tácticas diferentes estão a
ser introduzidas. Apesar da
competição ser mito alta, e o

desporto ser física e
mentalmente exigente, o
“Espírito do Jogo” ainda é uma
parte fundamental do Ultimate
e vencer o prémio de “Equipa
com Melhor Espírito” nas
competições, é altamente
obedecido tanto pelo grupo de
amigos que se juntam para
jogar no parque como para
jogadores que participam nos
campeonatos mundiais.
Durante o Torneio Mundial de 2008, mais de
1.600 jogadores participarem em mais de 70
equipas, o numero mais grande ate agora.
Este indica como Ultimate está crescer em
toda parte de mundo e como tal, muitos
paises reconhecem agora Ultimate como desporto competitivo.
ULTIMATE FRISBEE
Estilo Moçambicano
Uma mistura de estrangeiros e
moçambicanos, velhos e jovens, mulheres e
homens, jogam Ultimate em Maputo. Eles
se juntam na praia ou no parque.
Moçambique foi representado em três
torneios internacionais de Ultimate na
África do Sul, trazendo orgulhosamente
para casa o prémio do Espírito do Jogo.
Em Julho de 2008, o primeiro torneio de
praia na ilha de Xefina foi um sucesso
criando interesse pelo jogo aqui. Vieram
jogadores da Africa do Sul, Suazilândia, e,

obviamente um forte contingente de
Moçambique. Porque foi um sucesso tão
grande, a procura é cada vez maior para um
torneio Xefina maior e melhor em 2009.
A Associação Ultimate Mozambique (AUM)
está no processo de registo e o jogo também
já foi apresentado ao Ministério da Juventude
e Desportos de maneira a ser reconhecido
como um desporto oficial e ser introduzido
nas escolas e comunidades.
O segundo torneio anual na
praia da Xefina está
marcado para dias 01 e 02
de Maio de 2009. O
primeiro torneio visto 50
jogador corria na praia de
Xefina e Costa de Sol. O
formato foi um „chapéu‟ do
torneio, onde jogadores
individuais registrarem e
foram colocados em
diferentes equipes
baseando-se no nível de
experiência para em suma
equilibrar o jogo para todas
as equipes. O mesmo
formato será repetido para
o 2° torneio anual ainda
com um forte mandato
deste ano. Um jogador SulAfircano chagado Xefina, “o
mais „awesome‟ vindo para
um torneio de praia”.
