Theatre director EUGENIO BARBA and actress JULIA VARLEY come to Brasil to share
the eighth edition of the project THE SECRET ART OF THE PERFORMER and the
masters-in-residence HOW TO THINK THROUGH ACTIONS VIII.
To actors and directors, playwrights and academics, based on the principles of the
Theatre Anthropology and on the training, creation and staging traditions of the
Danish group ODIN TEATRET.
Idealized by Cia. YinsPiração’s director Luciana Martuchelli and by Odin Teatret’s director,
Eugenio Barba, the event is unique and exclusive, produced in the Brazilian capital since
2008.
"THE SECRET ART OF THE PERFORMER, in Brasilia, became one of the fronts of my
battle against the flighty nature of theatre. Every year, a prodigy happens: a few days
parenthesis under unique life and work conditions, in a small ranch, in the middle of
immensity and out of Brasilia. There, like a caravan guesthouse, Julia Varley and I meet with
about twenty Brazilian and Latin-American colleagues and share a strange adventure: get out
of the timetables and our daily life. It is as if we wanted to find again the origins. We ask
ourselves what are, in the practical way, the inner and technical paths to fine-tune and
achieve our necessity to make theatre. We deal with individual questions and answers,
following the principles of the Theatre Anthropology and our professional experiences.”

SEARCHING FOR DRAMATICAL EXCELLENCE
THE SECRET ART OF THE PERFORMER – Brazil – 2015 is a workshop under Odin
Teatret’s levels of excellence, happening with exclusivity in the capital of Brazil. It is
addressed to actors, directors and academics from BRAZIL and LATIN-AMERICA with
proved experience.
This year we are opening, for the first time, for other countries. The workshop is
ministered in Portuguese and Spanish, but we’ll offer translation to English for
foreigner observers.
In the last eight years, this residence of dramatical excellence with the director of Odin
Teatret, allowed actors, directors and academics of different traditions and aesthetics recycle
and update fundaments, writings, methodologies, techniques and strategies about the
Theatre Anthropology from its creator point of view, offering a unique contact with his creative
process through practical and technical work.
PRIVILEGE
The residence HOW TO THINK THROUGH ACTIONS is the event’s main activity. Currently,
THE SECRET ART OF THE PERFORMER is the only workshop offered in the whole
world where the Odin Teatret’s director, Eugenio Barba, works directly with actors who
aren’t from his group or performances.
The immersion approaches, for 8 hours a day, the creation of a dramaturgy proposed by the
actors’ scenes and materials – such as texts, songs and physical actions. The workshop aims
the appropriation of physical and vocal actions, the relation between the creation, the
dramaturgy and the director. The content points to the analysis of the differences between
movement and action, static and dynamical immobility, energy in time and energy in space
and other strategies to manipulate the spectator’s perception.
Since the beginning of the project, Barba worked under different themes: in 2008, with H.
Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House”; in 2009, with Amos Oz’s story, “Suddenly in the depths of the
forest”; in 2010, with “The flower of the ages”, inspired in Omar Khayyam’s poems; in
2011, the theme was “Love Stories”; in 2012, “A smiley woman (or man) carring a
burden over her (his) shoulders walks towards the abysm”. In 2013, “The Sunset
Architecture”; and in 2014, inspired in Vinicius de Moraes, “Who will pay for the funeral
and the flowers if I die from love?”
TRAINING WITH THE MASTER
The expression “training with the master” comes from the book THE SECRET ART OF THE
PERFORMER, and stands for a sequence of photos where Barba works directly with
Colombian actor Juan Monsalve. These images originated the obsession in creating a space
for artists interested in Odin’s investigations.
The 4-day residence with Barba and Julia Varley will have its training dedicated to the
following content (main activities):
1. Elaboration of physical and vocal actions;
2. Relation between organic score and narrative structure;
3. Relation between director’s dramaturgy and text;
4. Relation between director’s, writer’s and actor’s dramaturgies;
5. Quotidian and extra quotidian techniques;
6. Difference between movement and action;
7. Static and dynamic immobilities;
8. The energy of space and time;
9. The director’s and the spectator’s perception;
VACANCIES AND PREREQUISITES
It will be offered 18 (eighteen) vacancies for actors (practical level) and 8 (eight)
vacancies for directors and academics (observers) previously selected by curriculum
and letter of intent.
The selected artists will be hosted together with the director and the actress, from the night of

December 2 until the morning of December 7 2015 in a small ranch near Brasilia,
exclusive habitat of the project THE SECRET ART OF THE PERFORMER. The activities will
be developed through 8 (eight) hours a day, during 4 (four) entire days, aiming the
construction of a performance under Eugenio Barba’s direction and Julia Varley’s
preparation.
Each actor will create a 5-minute scene with text and song. This will be the material from
which Barba will create the performance. OBSERVERS don’t have to create the scene.

The scenes, texts, poems, songs must be developed under the theme: "United mouths

December 2nd, 2015 (Wednesday) – Participant’s accreditation and opening of THE
SECRET ART OF THE PERFORMER. Open to public.

December 3 -6th, 2015 (Thursday to Sunday) – Residence and Workshop: preparation
and staging with Eugenio Barba and Julia Varley, exclusive event to actors and directors
previously selected.
December 7th, 2015 (Monday) – Check out at 9 a.m. from Solar Guadalupe (ranch) and
return to Brasilia.

Applications must be sent until October 25 , 2015. The next day we’ll start calling the
selected actors and observers.
Applier as OBSERVER must send small curriculum, picture (jpeg, up to 300 Kb) and
letter of intent containing the intentions with the training and informing oneself’s knowledge
about Odin Teatret’s work. In case of having videos of your work, send the YouTube link for
