The American Visceral Leishmaniasis (AVL) is a serious infectious disease transmitted by the female sandfly Lutzomyia
longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae). They transmit the protozoan parasite to animals when they feed on the blood
of these. The insect is found in all neotropical region, occurring primarily in the areas of semi-arid and dry tropical
forests. The aim of this search is to sequence the complete mitochondrial genome of L. longipalpis and compare it with
other species of the order Diptera, in view to identify genetic markers informative for studies of population dispersion.
The studied material was collected in the city of Sobral - CE using CDC traps. The sandflies were stored in 96%
ethanol at a temperature of -20°. Total DNA was extracted from insects using the method Chellex and subjected to
PCR using degenerate primers from mitochondrial genes of Diptera. The amplicons will be sequenced, the sequences
will be processed and analyzed using the BLASTn program and the contigs will be formed in the Staden and CAP3
programs. At the moment, we have amplified approximately 4,262 bp. That corresponds to five structural genes:
ND2, COI, COII, ATP6, ATP8, and seven genes that encode tRNAs: tRNAMet, tRNATrp, tRNACys tRNATyr, tRNALeu,
tRNALys, tRNAAsp. The complete sequence of Lu. Longipalpis mitogenome may provide subsidies for comparison
analysis and divergence of dipteran insects and development of diagnostic DNA-based and genetic markers.
