Second-generation Portuguese and Diaspora (Part I):
Transnational lives
WS221
In a transnational world, where people, capital, cultures, and other social constructs
circulate across borders, the children of (im)migrants provide a critical perspective on global
diasporic relations. This two-part workshop examines the experiences of second-generation
Portuguese youth in diverse diasporic spaces where their identities are in question and where
they negotiate transnational lives and networks. How do they create their own spaces and
repertoires of belonging as local and (trans)national powers compete for their allegiance?
