Chegados a Julho, eis que o Verão se encontra na sua
plenitude e, com ele, todo um vasto programa de animação e actividades diversas relevantes para a nossa
imagem turística e que importa destacar na presente edição. Assim, começo por fazer referência à Cerca
do Convento Espírito Santo em Loulé, que será palco
de um dos eventos que, pela popularidade e prestígio
granjeados, é já acontecimento obrigatório no calendário de eventos da chamada “época alta”: Trata-se do
Festival de Jazz, a decorrer nos dias 29, 30 e 31, numa organização da Casa da Cultura, com o apoio da Câmara Municipal de Loulé. Nesta cidade, saliente-se a
Feira Popular, a decorrer de 13 a 17, de Julho no Largo do Tribunal, proporcionando um reencontro sempre
agradável com o artesanato criativo, as artes decorativas, a Gastronomia e a animação variada. Em Quarteira, em pleno “Calçadão”, teremos a “Festáfrica”, no
Sábado, dia 23, iniciativa que reúne todos os anos inúmeras pessoas, das comunidades africanas entre nós.
Os carros clássicos, no seu singular esplendor, estarão
entretanto em destaque naquela que é a maior concentração da Península Ibérica de viaturas antigas, a
decorrer no nosso Concelho nos dias 8, 9 e 10. Com estas sugestões, espero sinceramente que todos, entre
residentes e visitantes, aproveitemos a oportunidade
para desfrutar de um mês de Julho agradável, num clima de lazer e salutar convívio.
We are now in the month of July, the summer is in full
bloom, and with it a vast animation program offering an
array of activities that are relevant to our tourism image
and which deserve highlighting in this edition. To begin
with, the Espirito Santo Convent Enclosure, in Loulé, will
stage an event that has become a mandatory happening
on the calendar of the so called “high season”, on account
of the popularity and prestige it has acquired: The Jazz Festival taking place between the 29, 30 and 31, organised by
the House of Culture with the support of the Municipality of Loulé. Also worth highlighting is the “Popular Fair”,
taking place between the 13 and the 17 July in the Courthouse Square of our city, offering a pleasant reunion with
creative arts and crafts, decorative arts, gastronomy as well
as varied animation. In Quarteira, the pedestrian marginal, “Calçadão”, will be staging the “Festáfrica”, on Saturday
23, an initiative that gathers a large crowd of people every year from the African communities living in our midst.
The classic cars, in their unique magnificence, will also be
in the spotlight in what will be the largest concentration
of old cars on the Iberian Peninsula, taking place in our
County between the 8, 9 and 10. I sincerely hope that with
this range of suggestions everybody, local population and
visitors alike, will seize the opportunity to enjoy a pleasant month of July, in an atmosphere of leisure and healthy
interaction.

Vasco Silva Lopes, arquitecto de formação, partilha a presente mostra “Entre Margens” não como um projecto planeado e acabado, mas resultante de visões insulares e
ribeirinhas de Cabo Verde, Guiné Bissau e Moçambique, onde pretende fugir a modelos de turista ocasional ou visões
etnográficas. A linha condutora é simplesmente o momento de imagens captadas “entre margens” dessas realidades,
ritmos e pausas.
Vasco Silva Lopes, architect by training, shares this exhibit ‘Between Margins’ not as a planned and finished Project, but rather as a result of insular and riparian visions from Cape Verde,
Guinea Bissau and Mozambique, in which he seeks to avoid
the occasional tourist models or the ethnographic visions.
The common thread is quite simply the moment of the images that were captured ‘between the margins of those realities,
rhythms and pauses.

A Câmara Municipal de Loulé tem o prazer de apresentar a
exposição individual de um dos mais importantes artistas
contemporâneos sérvios.
Detentor de três prémios do Salão Internacional de Belgrado, concedidos respectivamente em 1999, 2003 e 2005, o
prémio da Melhor Exposição do Ano de 2005 e o Galardão
Nacional para a contribuição à Cultura Nacional em 2011,
entre outros.
Rafajlovic recebeu essas distinções, principalmente pelo trabalho efectuado em Quarteira e Loulé e dedicado a
Portugal.
A exposição “O Trabalho” é o fruto de quinze anos de trabalho, uma antologia dos melhores momentos e das peças
mais emblemáticas especialmente adaptadas e preparadas para essa ocasião e consiste em centenas fotografias
compostas em cerca de trinta quadros. Os motivos são quotidianos de rua, de feiras, de cemitérios e de praia, mas as
composições plásticas e sensibilidade artística, transcendem o meio fotográfico e transformam as fotografias iniciais numa estrutura inovativa, rica em movimento e em
contraponto. São sempre estudos do tempo – cicatrizes do
passado e glória de cada momento presente captado pela câmara.
The City Council of Loulé has the great pleasure of presenting
the individual exhibition of one of the most important Serbian artists of our times.
Holder of three awards from the International Belgrade Art Exhibition, granted in 1999, 2003 and 2005, respectively, of the
award for the Best Exhibition in 2005 and the National Prize
for Contribution to the National Culture in 2011, among others.
Rafajlovic received these distinctions mainly for the work carried out in Quarteira and Loulé and which are dedicated to
Portugal.
The exhibition ‘Work’ is the fruit of fifteen years of work, an
anthology of the best moments and of the most emblematic works, specially adapted and prepared for these occasions
and consisting of hundreds of photographs arranged in roughly thirty frames. The motifs are from everyday life, streets,
fairs, cemeteries and beaches, although the plastic composition and artistic sensitivity transcend the photographic milieu
and transform the initial photographs into an innovative structure, rich in movement and in counterpoint. They always portray studies of time – scars from the past and the glory of each
present moment captured by the camera.

A exposição da conceituada artista alemã Cláudia Kallscheuer, organizada em colaboração com o Centro Cultural
São Lourenço, apresenta uma original selecção de trabalhos que primam pela originalidade, onde a agulha e a linha substituem os tradicionais pincéis e lápis.
Esta exposição em Vale do Lobo, que será a primeira mostra da artista em Portugal, pretende provocar uma certa
tensão entre o abstracto gestual e os objectos triviais ilustrando assim a verdadeira essência do seu trabalho. Panos
usados, velharias, sacos de chá, são alguns dos elementos
utilizados nos seus trabalhos criativos e que prometem
surpreender os mais ávidos apreciadores de arte.
The exhibition of the renowned German artist, Claudia Kallscheuer, organized in collaboration with the São Lourenço Cultural Centre, will present an unusual selection of works that
excel in their originality and where the needle and the line
have replaced the traditional brushes and crayons.
This exhibition in Vale do Lobo, that will be the artist’s first exhibition in Portugal, aims to cause a certain tension between
the gestural abstract and the trivial objects, thus revealing the
true essence of her work. Used pieces of cloth, objects from antiques shops and tea bags are some of the items used in her
creative work that will surprise even the most avid art lovers.

O Projecto Akreditar, em Quarteira, comemorando o 2.º
ano da sua actividade social, levou a efeito no 1 de Junho,
Dia da Criança, a apresentação e consequente lançamento
de um trabalho em livro, pensado para os leitores mais jovens, com o respectivo título “As Lições da Vó Patachoca –
Arrumar é Divertido”.
São ilustradores desta obra as próprias crianças que frequentam a Escola de Artes do Projecto, o que confere a
estes “artistas” uma acrescida empatia em relação a este
livro de leitura fácil e excelente aspecto gráfico.
O Projecto tem a sua sede na Quinta do Romão, em Quarteira, ocupa-se, entre outras coisas, na defesa ao combate
à pobreza e à exclusão social e deve-se em boa hora a um
Protocolo de compromisso celebrado entre o Instituto da
Segurança Social, a Câmara Municipal de Loulé e a Fundação António Aleixo.
The Akreditar Project, in Quarteira, celebrating its 2nd year of
social activity, carried out an event on 1 June, International
children’s Day, viz. the presentation and launching of a beautiful work in the form of a book, designed for the younger
readers, under the title ‘Granny Patachoca’s Lessons –Tidying up is Fun’.
The children that attend the Project’s Art School are the illustrators of this work, which gives these ‘artists’ an added
empathy towards the book that is easy to read and has an excellent graphic design.
The Project, that has its headquarters at the Romão Farm, in
Quarteira, and is engaged in the fight against poverty and
social exclusion, among other things, is the result of a Protocol of intent signed, in good time, between the Social Security Institute, Loulé Municipal Council and the António Aleixo
Foundation.

The aim of the Medieval Scriptorium
Exhibit is to represent the manuscript
centre of any Eastern Europe monastery
or cathedral of the Middle Ages.
Here one can admire the furniture,
tools, materials and utensils necessary
for the complex and demanding task of
reproducing a psalter, a bible, a missal
or any other liturgical book.

Superstar, Evita, Cats e Fantasma da Ópera valeram-lhe

Award. Acompanhados por uma reforçada Orquestra
do Algarve, Sofia Escobar, a nossa Cristine do Fantasma da Ópera em cena em Londres e John Addison, vão

On the next 1, 2 and 3 July, for the 22nd consecutive year,
Boliqueime will host its Popular Festival in the Town’s Church
Square.
Organised by Boliqueime Community Council, the initiative
will have the participation of the Cultural Association, the
Community House, the Sports Club, the Recreation Society,
and is supported by the Loulé City Council.
There will be plenty of food and drink and musical entertainment will not be lacking.

A Feira Popular de Loulé é uma iniciativa da autarquia que
pretende reavivar um antigo evento de beneficência e oferecer à cidade e aos seus habitantes uma opção diversificada de entretenimento e animação nas noites quentes
de verão.
A Feira contará com diversas valências, entre elas a exposição e venda de artesanato, livros, plantas, produtos
agro-alimentares, animação infantil e desportiva, entre
outros. Paralelamente, o evento oferece também ao visitante a oportunidade de apreciar os sabores da cozinha
tradicional algarvia nas diversas tasquinhas existentes no
local, bem como desfrutar de um espectáculo de folclore
ou música tradicional portuguesa.
The Loulé Popular Fair is an initiative of the local authority,
which aim is to renew an old benefice event and to offer a diversified entertainment option in the warm summer nights to
the city and to its inhabitants.
The Fair will include various valences, such as handicrafts,
books, plants, agro-food products, children’s entertainment
and sport, among others. In parallel, the event also offers the
visitors the opportunity to enjoy the flavours of traditional Algarve cooking which can be savoured in the several existing
stalls, as well as Portuguese folklore and traditional music.

A 9ª edição do Projecto Quarteira Activa realizar-se-á durante os meses de Julho e Agosto. A associação Dinamika,
com o apoio da Câmara Municipal de Loulé, da Junta de
Freguesia de Quarteira e do Comércio Local promoverá 21
aulas de Fitness, gratuitas, por semana.
A animação de praia concentra-se em 4 palcos de Fitness,
situados:
- Na Praça do Mar;
- Em frente ao Hotel Dom José;
- Em frente ao Rest. O Lendário;
- No Calçadão nascente.
Serão ministradas aulas com a duração aproximada de 35
min., com o objectivo de dinamizar as férias daqueles que
visitam Quarteira, promovendo assim, a prática de actividade física organizada.
As modalidades ministradas pelos cerca de 10 monitores
de Fitness são muito variadas, desde a salsa, passando pela aeróbica, localizada, beachcombat, yoga, etc.
The 9th edition of the Active Quarteira Project will take place
during the months of July and August. The Dinamika Association will promote, with the support of the Municipality of
Loulé, of Quarteira Community Council and of the Local Trade,
21 Fitness classes every week, that may be attended free of
charge.
Beach animation will be concentrated on 4 Fitness stages, located on:
- Mar Sq.;
- In front of the Dom José Hotel;
- In front of the Lendário Restaurant.
- On the eastern Calçadão (pedestrian marginal).
The classes will last approximately 35 min and their aim is to
boost the holidays of those who visit Quarteira by promoting
the practice of organised physical activity.
About 10 Fitness teachers will be teaching various modalities
that will include salsa, aerobics, localized gymnastics, beachcombat, yoga, etc.

No âmbito do Projecto Charme Loulé, realiza-se de 04 a
08 e de 11 a 15 de Julho, na Zona Histórica da cidade, a
Universidade de Verão dedicada aos Estudos sobre o Mediterrâneo.
A iniciativa oferece um conjunto de actividades educativas e complementares, tanto para estudantes universitários como para todos aqueles que queiram ampliar, ou
actualizar, a sua formação académica e as suas competências socioprofissionais.
Esta segunda edição da Universidade de Verão tem como
finalidade dar a conhecer alguns dos saberes que a Universidade do Algarve desenvolve utilizando uma metodologia
activa que integra a teoria e a prática.
Assim, diariamente, das 18h00 às 20h00, terão lugar palestras interactivas sobre línguas, literaturas e culturas do
Mediterrâneo: árabe, italiano, grego, francês, espanhol,
português, latim, bem como uma visita de estudo na cidade. Dois dias por semana, das 21h30 às 23h00, os participantes poderão experimentar os Laboratórios de Artes
Visuais e de Artes Cénicas. A actividade culminará num
convívio de apreciação da cozinha mediterrânica.
A Summer University dedicated to Studies on the Mediterranean will be hosted in the Historic Zone of the city as part of
the Loulé Charm Project, between 4 and 8 July and between
the 11 and 15 July.
The initiative offers a number of educational and supplementary activities, both for university students as well as for all
those who wish to expand or update their academic education
and their socio-professional skills.
This second edition of the Summer University aims to publicise some of the knowledge that the Algarve University develops through an active methodology that combines theory
and practice.
Thus daily, between 6.00 pm and 8.00 pm, interactive lectures
on Mediterranean languages, literature and culture will be
held: Arab, Italian, Greek, French Spanish, Portuguese, Latin,
as well as a study visit around the city. Two days a week, from
9.30 pm to 11.00 pm, the participants may further experience
the Visual and Scenic Arts Laboratories. The activity will close
with a social event during which the participants will be able
to enjoy Mediterranean cooking.

O Algarve Classic Cars integra pelo quarto ano consecutivo o Programa ALLGARVE, uma iniciativa do Turismo do Algarve e do Turismo de Portugal.
In view of the success achieved with the previous editions, The
Portuguese Classic Cars Club will organize the Algarve Classic
Cars on the 8, 9 and 10 July, which has become a regular, historic rally included in the calendars of events of the Portuguese
Federation of Automobilism and Karting and of the International Federation of Antique and Classic Cars.
For the fourth year in a row, the Algarve Classic Cars will take
place as part of the ALLGARVE Program, an initiative of the
Algarve Tourism Board and of the Portuguese Tourism Board.

(Mercado Municipal de Loulé; Avenida da República-frente CMLoule e Largo do Tribunal, integrado na Feira Popular de Loulé), fruto do centro de convívio e boa vivência,
onde pactuam os princípios da ética, na concretização dos
fins morais e sociais, que é a dignificação da criança, do jovem, do homem e da cultura ancestral.
The Children and Young Folk Dance Group of Loulé, founder of
the Association Friends of Loulé Group will be celebrating their
34th anniversary hosting yet another Folklore Festival – Echoes of the Past – 4th Edition, in the City of Loulé (Loulé Municipal Market; República Avenue – in front of the Loulé Town
Hall and Court House Square, as part of the Loulé Popular Fair),
a result of the centre for socializing and of good living, where
principles of ethics agree for the materialization of the moral
and social ends, namely ennobling the child, the young, man
and ancestral culture.

Na freguesia de Salir, existe um sítio denominado por Arneiro da Rocha com apenas quatro habitantes, localizado
num montado onde abundam oliveiras, sobreiros e outras árvores do barrocal do concelho de Loulé.
Foi lá que encontrámos a Dona Lucília Guerreiro Rosa,
uma viúva de 75 anos que aqui nasceu e aqui escolheu
passar os seus últimos dias.
Depois de uma vida inteira de trabalho, a Dona Lucília,
que também esteve 12 anos em França, contou-nos que
tinha apenas 9 anos quando começou a trabalhar na dura lida do campo… apanhou figos, alfarroba e azeitonas,
trabalhou na ceifa, e criou animais que depois vendia nas
feiras.
Actualmente reparte os seus dias com um cão e um gato e de vez em quando ainda cria umas “galinhitas” para consumo próprio. Se gosta de habitar no Arneiro da
Rocha? Respondeu-nos prontamente que sim, apesar do
sítio não ter a gente de outrora, ainda é um bom lugar
para viver.
Arneiro da Rocha is a place in the community of Salir that has
but 4 inhabitants; it is located on an oak-plantation that also
has plenty of olive trees, cork-oak trees and other trees typical
of the slopes of our County.
It was in this place that we found Dona Lucília Guerreiro Rosa,
a 75 year old widow, born here and who has chosen to spend
her last days in this place.
After a lifetime of work, Dona Lucília who also spent 12 years
in France, tells us that she was only 9 years when she began to
work - the hard toil in the fields, picking figs, carob pods and
olives, she worked during reaping-time and also raised animals that she later sold at the fairs.
Today she shares her everyday with a dog and a cat, and every
now and then she also raises a few chickens for her own consumption. Do you like living in Arneiro da Rocha? She promptly answered yes, and although there are only few people living
there now, it is still a good place to live.

José da Costa Guerreiro nasceu em Loulé a 14 de Novembro
de 1885 e faleceu em 31 de Março de 1962.
Exerceu o cargo de Presidente da Câmara Municipal de Loulé de 1935 a 1946 e de 1951 a 1956, dedicando-se profundamente ao progresso da vida local. Durante a sua presidência,
sempre apoiado por Raul Pinto, o chefe da Secretaria da autarquia, batalhou pela electrificação do concelho, pela criação da Escola do Ensino Técnico, pelo desenvolvimento das
freguesias rurais, pelo embelezamento da vila de Loulé e pela restauração do edifício dos Paços do Concelho. Criou prémios para os melhores estudantes do concelho, foi erigido
no seu mandato um monumento digno do nome de Duarte
Pacheco, foi obreiro do Parque Municipal e desenvolveu um
movimento para o desvio do caminho-de-ferro, entre outras
obras de grande interesse público, como a construção de um
bairro de casas económicas.
Galardoado pelo Presidente da República com as insígnias
de oficial da Ordem de Cristo, em Março de 1946, haveria
também de ser agraciado a título póstumo com a Medalha
Municipal de Mérito – Grau Ouro, em 1994, pela Câmara de
Loulé, como reconhecimento pela sua vasta obra político-administrativa.
Com o seu nome ligado à Santa Casa da Misericórdia, instituição que dirigiu e a quem legou os seus bens de fortuna, foi em 1906 o grande defensor do Carnaval Civilizado de
Loulé, um dos mais importantes cartazes turísticos e culturais do concelho.

José da Costa Guerreiro was born in Loulé on 14 November
1885 and died on 31 March 1962.
He discharged the duty as Mayor of Loulé from 1935 to 1946
and from 1951 to 1956, having devoted himself profoundly to
the progress of local life. During his mayorship, always supported by Raul Pinto, head of the local authority secretariat, he
struggled for the electricity supply to the county, for the creation of the Technical Education School, for the development
of the rural communities, to beautify the city of Loulé and for
the restoration of the Town Hall building. He created awards
for the best students in the County and it was during his mandate that a monument worthy of the name Duarte Pacheco
was erected; he was behind the building of the Municipal Park
and developed a movement for the deviation of the railway,
among other works of great public interest, such as the construction of an affordable housing district.
Awarded by the President of the Republic with the official insignia of the Order of Christ in March 1946, he was also awarded posthumously with the Municipal Gold Medal of Merit, in
1994, by the Municipality of Loulé, in acknowledgement of his
vast political and administrative work.
With his name connected to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia,
an institution that he directed and to which he bequeathed
his assets, 1906 he was the great defender of the Civilized Carnival of Loulé, one of the most important tourist and cultural
attractions of our county.

João Corpas Viegas nasceu na Ajuda (Lisboa) a 23 de Novembro de 1924 e faleceu em Quarteira (Loulé) no dia 1
de Fevereiro de 2006.
Filho de pais louletanos, João de Sousa Viegas e de Ana Corpas Viegas, fez a escolaridade básica e o ensino secundário em Lisboa, mas viria a trabalhar depois na Companhia
do Caminho-de-Ferro de Benguela, onde foi contratado no
princípio de 1948. Aí dedicou-se também à actividade jornalística, tendo sido articulista e repórter de vários jornais
de referência de Angola.
Regressado a Portugal, a Loulé, acumulou funções no jornal “A Voz de Loulé”, como redactor e contabilista, a partir
do início de 1977. Homem de trato afável e de vasta cultura, interessou-se pela obra bibliográfica de Ataíde de Oliveira, promovendo posteriormente a reedição do livro “A
Lenda das Mouras Encantadas e dos Encantamentos do Algarve”, integrou com entusiasmo a Comissão Pró-Museu e
Arquivo Histórico de Loulé, enveredou com seu malogrado
filho pelos trilhos da fotografia profissional e participou
activamente na vida cívica e cultural de Loulé.
Em 1981 regressou a Angola, onde exerceu durante cinco
anos funções de chefe de escritório, de técnico de contas
e de gerente de empresa. Voltou de novo ao seu País em
1986, retomando a sua actividade fotográfica, participando nos Congressos do Algarve e de Loulé, onde abordou aspectos do património cultural e das tradições louletanas.
Foi agraciado pelo Município de Loulé em 2001 com a Medalha Municipal de Mérito – Grau Prata.
João Corpas Viegas was born in Ajuda (Lisbon) on 23 November 1924 and died in Quarteira (Loulé) on 1 February 2006.
His parents, João de Sousa Viegas and Ana Corpas Viegas, were
both from Loulé. He took basic and secondary education in Lisboa, and later got a job with the Benguela Railway Company,
where he started to work in the beginning of 1948. While in
Angola he also devoted his time to journalism, having worked
as a columnist and reporter for several reference newspapers
in Angola.
Upon his return to Portugal, viz. to Loulé, he worked in the
newspaper ‘A Voz de Loulé’, both as editor and as accountant,
from the beginning of 1977. A pleasant-spoken person with
a wide cultural experience, he took an interest in the bibliographic work of Ataíde de Oliveira, having later promoted the
re-edition of the book ‘The tale of the Enchanted Moorish girls
and the charms of Algarve”; he took part with enthusiasm in
the Pro-Museum and Historic Archive Committee of Loulé and
with his prematurely deceased son he took the path of professional photography and participated actively in the civic and
cultural life of Loulé.
In 1981 he returned to Angola, where he worked for five years
as office supervisor, accountant and manager. He returned to
his homeland once again in 1986, resuming his photographic activity, having participated in Congresses in Algarve and in
Loulé, where he addressed subjects like the cultural heritage
and the traditions of Loulé.
He was awarded the Silver Medal of Merit by the Municipality of Loulé in 2001.

as nossas praias e Quarteira já está registando grande concorrência, especialmente aos domingos, apesar de as carreiras de camionetas dificultarem a deslocação de muitos mais
louletanos que a desejariam frequentar.
Já com muita dificuldade se conseguirá uma casa disponível
para alugar e nota-se grande procura de quartos nas pensões, cujo número está aumentando animadoramente, o que
é sintoma de que nem só os louletanos gostam de Quarteira
para passar as suas férias. (…)”
“With the arrival of warm weather, our beaches begin to perk
up and one can already see a large number of beach-goers in
Quarteira, especially on Sundays, although the bus routes makes
it difficult to get to the beach for many people from Loulé who
would like to enjoy some time at the seaside.
It is already difficult to find a house to rent, and there has been
a great demand for rooms at the guesthouse, which number has
increased encouragingly, a sign that it is not only the people
from Loulé who enjoy spending their summer holidays in Quarteira. (…)”

Apresentamos no mês de Julho como peça de arte sacra,
alvo de restauro e conservação, óleo sobre madeira com a
figura de Santa Maria Madalena.
Esta peça da igreja paroquial de Querença é uma peça religiosa de significativo valor artístico e patrimonial, da escola portuguesa de meados do século XVIII.
A história de Maria Madalena é uma história carregada de
fé e simbolismo. É descrita no Novo Testamento como uma
das discípulas mais dedicadas de Jesus Cristo.
Acompanhou Jesus em todo o seu caminho até à crucificação e estava junto do sepulcro chorando quando testemunhou a sua Ressurreição.
Na arte litúrgica da Igreja é representada segurando um
alabastro de óleo. As festividades em sua honra são celebradas no dia 22 de Julho. É a padroeira das cabeleireiras, fabricantes de perfumes, pecadores penitentes, entre
outros.
In this month of July we present a sacred art piece - oil on
wooden panel - that has undergone restoration and conservation featuring Saint Mary Magdalene.
This piece belonging to the church in Querença is a valuable religious item, in artistic and heritage terms, from the mid 18th
Century Portuguese school,
The story of Mary Magdalene is a story laden with symbolism
and faith. She is described in the New Testament as one of the
most devoted disciples of Jesus Christ.
She followed Jesus all the way to his crucifixion and she was
weeping by his tomb when she witnessed His resurrection.
The festivities in her honour are celebrated on the 22 July. She
became the patron saint of many religious orders and is highly venerated by the faithful.

from our varied regional gastronomy, extracted from the book
“Gastronomy of Loulé County”.
ARJAMOLHO
‘ARJAMOLHO’ (PORTUGUESE GASPACHO)
Ingredientes
300 grs. de tomates maduros; 200 grs. de pão caseiro duro;
1dl de azeite; 1 pimento verde; 1 pepino; 1 cebola; 3 dentes
de alho; 2 colheres de vinagre; orégãos q.b; sal grosso q.b;
Ingredients
300 g ripe tomatoes; 200 g hard bread home-made type; 1dl
olive oil; 1 green pepper; 1 cucumber; 1 onion; 3 cloves of garlic; 2 tablespoons of vinegar; oregano to taste; salt to taste;
Preparação
Descascam-se os dentes de alho e pisam-se com sal. Tiram-se os pés, a pele e as sementes aos tomates, limpa-se o
pimento, descasca-se a cebola e o pepino e cortam-se em
pedaços pequenos (quase picado). Num recipiente, deita-se o azeite, os orégãos, a água fria e o vinagre. Juntam-se todos os outros ingredientes previamente preparados.
Corta-se o pão em fatias ou cubos pequenos e adiciona-se.
Mexe-se e serve-se bem frio.
Preparation
Peel the cloves of garlic and crush them in salt. Remove the
stem ends, the skin and the seeds, clean the green pepper, peel
the onion and the cucumber and chop it all into small pieces. Pour the olive oil, the oregano, cold water and vinegar in
a bowl. Add all the previously prepared ingredients. Cut the
bread into thin slices or cubes and add.. Mix and serve very
cold.
